An Oakland gem. I will return and would recommend the Lake Merritt Terrace restaurant to my friends. Great view of the new church and of course Lake Merritt.

The bread was burnt on the BLT and the bun was burnt on the turkeyburger. The soup was cold and the wait for our food was interminable. Parking is such a problem at this location that food and service need to be outstanding in order to attract patrons.

Every time I haved dined at the Terrace Room, the service has been terrible. My last visit was no exception. The server didn't show up to offer drinks until 10 minutes after we had arrived. This is followed by little to no offers of coffee or water refills, and they ALWAYS slop coffee on the table. The food came out of the kitchen in a reasonable manner and it was good, but the terrible service and inattentive waitstaff is really a downer.

We had a lovely meal overlooking the lake. Staff could have been a bit more attentive to refilling coffee etc. but were unfailingly polite and had good suggestions. Crispy salmon was delicious, the citrus sauce was a bit too tart to eat an entire meal(would have been fine as appetizer) Oddly, there was no Eggs Benedict on the Brunch menu but the corned beef hash with two poached was delicious. Although not what you would think of as "kid friendly" we brought our 4 and 5 yo. and the staff happily split a plate for them and made us feel more than welcome. We had delicious bloody marys (bottomless!) with our meal and then had a lovely walk around the lake. This restaurant is a 1930s era gem with a great view and we will definitely be back

Our reservation was for 1:30 p.m. We arrived 10 minutes late which didn't matter because we were seated at least 30 minutes later. I requested a table with a view of Lake Merritt and we were seated at a corner table with limited view. A tab close to $300 would have made the experience complete.

Everything was great except our waiter spilled a drink on one of our guests. He was apologetic and the service had been outstanding up to that point so we weren't too upset about it (that and we were heading to a ball game afterward anyway), but nothing was comped on our bill as could be expected from any decent establishment. Food and ambiance are praiseworthy. Will return for brunch, and maybe try the restaurant for dinner.

The view of the lake was perfectly captured with the over-sized windows and set a really cozy ambiance. The food was unqiue and very good...I had the eggs benedit with crab cakes and an orange hollandaise sauce. The service was a bit on the slow side especially considering there were only 3 tables being occupied at the time. And the waitress dropped a glass of water right into my purse. The food was good, but the service wasn't much to be desired.

Beautiful view of Lake Merritt, striking historical art deco interior, and, unfortunately, some of the worst institutional food for brunch in the Bay Area. Pancakes with blueberries resulted in two gray colored, smoky-pan-grease tasting pancakes with half a strawberry. An omelet was that alone, with no plating. For the pricing and ambiance, this is simply unacceptable. The server sensed my incredulity and tried to recover, but the current kitchen/bar is hopeless. Maybe it was an off day, but as a regular brunch goer, the worst I've had in the Bay Area.

I took my family ther for Easter Brunch and it was great. Everyone loved it. This is great for families if/when the age group spans a large range. There are non-threatening main courses for the more timid and a good range of dishes with more creativity and fresh local produce/seafood/beef etc. The staff has an urban/oakland funkiness that makes it fun and less pretentious.

I work near this restaurant and it has become my "go-to" spot for business lunches. The food is consistently good, and the service friendly and relaxed (if not occasionally a bit slow....) Also, it is worth noting the beautiful setting, with large windows that look directly onto Lake Merritt. I recently went there for Easter brunch and had perhaps the best Eggs Benedict that I've ever had (and I've had a alot!) This really is a hidden gem in a great setting in an area of Oakland dominated by low-end fast food spots.

This place is sadly overlooked and undeservedly quiet, as in, few customers on a Sunday morning. Generally well prepared breakfast standards elegantly presented by helpful, professional wait staff. Unbeatable view of Lake Merritt and greater Oakland. Good place to show off the town to visitors.

Nice setting/view in the grand old lake merritt hotel, friendly service and frequent filling of coffee cups (albeit would have expected gourmet coffee in a nice oakland/berkeley restaurant). A bit of a wait for the breakfast entrees (45 minutes), but a pleasant experience and straightforward, not fancy cuisine.

Loved the restuarant's art deco style. Very classy. The only thing that could stand improvment was the service. I have a feeling our server may have been new at this. She was slow to take our order and when you're on a 1 hour lunch break, speed is rather important. I wouldn't mind so much if I was there for dinner though. It would have been niced not to feel rushed.

Food was good w/tasty ingredients. Bread was not warmed, but decent. Steak came way overdone. Dessert was ok though with pieces of fruit too hard to cut with a spoon and too large to eat gracefully. 2 of the 3 wines that came with prix fixe meal were soso. Cobwebs needed to be cleared from windows. If the lighting had been toned down I might not have seen it. Staff was fairly attentive and friendly. It's too bad because if they tightened up some of their minor flaws I am guessing the place would be much more popular (nearly empty on Valaentines Day) which could make the ambiance better. They could have taken down the head table that was still set up as for a wedding function. Probably better brunch choice than late nite romance.

Our Valentine's Day dinner was lovely. It was a 3 course meal with wine parings that that was excellent(the shave fennel salad with mint and lemon was a treat, as was the filet with chard and fingerling potatoes), service was outstanding, and at the end of the night I was presented with a rose from our server to complete the occassion. It was reasonably priced also and the view of Lake Merrit at night makes it a special dinning experience.

    OpenTable Diner Since 2008
    Dined on 2/14/2009
Exceptional 3-course prix fixe Valentine's Day meal, though one of my two dining companions said the lobster bisque was a bit overpowering, and too "brown". The shaved fennel with parmesan and mint vinagarette was outstanding, as was both the filet mignon (according to my two friends who ordered it) and the scallops which I ordered... there could have been more of the roasted root vegetables to go with it, however. My friends enjoyed the fingerling potatoes with their filets, saying they were very flavorful and the proper consistency. And although they said their flourless decadent chocolate cake with white chocolate sauce was too rich for their liking (but tasty, they admit), I thoroughly enjoyed the apple and cranberry cobbler. Nice.

The Terrace Room has a great view of the lake and a pleasant atmosphere -perfect for a large group. I have to say that most of the reviews are spot on. The entrance is not as weird as some have stated -I thought it was posh. However, I didn't like that the host stand stood unmanned while we waited to check-in our group or that when someone did show up they did not engage us until after they rummaged around the desk, went back into the kitchen and then back to us for our initial greeting. Our server was incredibly polite and attentive, but my water glass went dry towards the end of our meal and was not refilled again. The brunch menu is short and sweet, but the polenta pancakes were dry and the maple syrup was the fructose corn syrup kind...

I have dined at the Terrace Room 4-5 times in the past year for lunch and brunch and have been quite satisfied each time. The setting is delightful with a great view of Lake Merritt and the building itself is a wonderfully Art Deco gem. The food is tasty and well-presented and very reasonably priced. Service has been attentive, in fact, perhaps a little too-much so but that is a very minor criticism. The restaurant is never crowded. Parking is somewhat challenging given the density of condos and apartment buildings in the area. I cannot comment on dinner but this is certainly a very good destination for either lunch or weekend brunch.

At 7:00PM on a Thursday night we were the only ones in the restaurant,a beautiful setting overlooking Lake Merritt. First the generic white bread was cold. The bread brought back was obviously microwaved I told the waiter it was terrible. He replied, "That's the best I can do!" and whisked it off the table. Our orders arrived My husband had the fish special, interesting but the chard was oversalted. My steak and shoestring potatoes arrived, the potatoes cold, the steak med-rare as ordered but with unappetizing grizzle. The sauteed spinach ordered never arrived. Waiter said he was unclear about the order. Wine choices were reasonable. The staff is clueless, and the kitchen needs work. A very unpleasant experience.
