  • Food average for the Sunday

Food average for the Sunday brunch we went to. Many standard American items but presented a bit over the top. The chef seems to take long tested and tried recipes and twists the around in an almost compulsive attempt to be trendy. The result is not all that appetizing or palatable.

Service was extremely slow and it did not even seem that crowded. We were there over 2 hours, and not because we were intending to take our sweet time. Gorgeous view of the lake. Food was good and the bottomless drinks were really fantastic. It just took so long to order and receive our food. Would give it another shot though.

  • The location, view, ambiance
    OpenTable Diner Since 2013
    Dined on 2/9/2013
The location, view, ambiance and service were all outstanding. The food was edible, but not as outstandicng as it was about a year ago. I ordered the crab and shrimp omelet, which was tasteless. Additionally, the potatoes that were served with it were somewhat hard and not as fully cooked as I would have liked. One other guest at our table ordered the chicken and waffles with the same or very similar comment. I would hope that the restaurant would really evaluate their chef's food preparation. This is an outstandfing loccation and I'd hate to see patronage dwindle.. I formerly lived right across the stret from the restaurant and hotel and always had an enjoyable experience, which included the tastefulness of the food.

We were seated and we were told our waiter was busy so the "seater" took our order. Our food came out very late, piecemeal, and wrong. I had to send my eggs back. Our waiter never did come over to see if we were okay. It was a very unsatisfactory brunch. It is too bad because the view is spectacular. If they could get a decent chef and train their staff, it could be a fantastic venue for a restaurant.

I always use the Terrace Room for business lunches because the view is great, the atmosphere is VERY quiet, and there is a really nice choice of lunch items. If you want a light lunch - as I often do - there is a cup of soup (I had an excellent tomato basil bisque) and a half sandwich. Caesar Salad is also very good. Attentive service, beautiful room.

Sloooooooow service. No appetizers at all to select from. Small soup came out before lunch entree but those who ordered small salads had it serviced with lunch. Ran out of dessert or wasn't even available so ended up with a limited menu selection. This was an embarrassing corporate lunch for my employees. How are you still in business? Btw- restaurant is run down and tired looking including the staff. Suggestion is to bring up your restaurant expectations to the level that meets the spectacular view.

The location can't be beat, and the view is lovely. Took a client here for lunch, but was surprised at how all of the people eating in the restaurant were elderly (80's and older). Perhaps the restaurant is located near an elder residence, and they offer a lunch deal? Not sure, but my client thought it was a little odd, as did I, and so I'm not sure I'll take a client there again. The food was great, however, and our waiter was very polite and attentive. Parking is on the street, which can be tricky depending on the day and time.

This restaurant is the dining room of the Lake Merritt Hotel, built just a couple of years before the Great Crash. The physical space has a lot of character and hasn't been "improved" upon substantially for at least the last 30 years. I'll be happy if it stays that way forever. The building in which it is housed is no longer a hotel but a senior residence. The Terrace Room could be thought of as a residents' dining room that is open to the very fortunate public. The menu, though not extensive, is skillfully balanced, and the kitchen does a very good job with dishes that are unpretentious and nicely-constructed. The waitstaff, from what we experienced at any rate, are excellent and reasonably well-informed. Very enjoyable.

I really wanted to like this place, when we walked in there was only about three other tables seated so it was quite and we had a great table location. Unfortunately the service was lackluster, with only three other tables you would expect the service to be prompt. We waited for 15 minutes to have our order taken, over 30 minutes for our food and on one order they completely messed up. A friend ask for no cheese in her omelette and received no mushrooms, the part that sold her on the omelette, and no toast. When my friend asked about her toast (10 minutes later since our server disappeared) she stated that you had to request toast even though it comes with it. The bottomless mimosas were great but not enough to brighten the rest of our meal

I made a 12:15 reservation for brunch on a Sunday. Arrived around 12:10 and waited a few minutes for the hostess to set up our table. Once we were seated, we waited over 20 minutes for someone to acknowledge us. There were people seated behind us that were served 4 times and no one ever came over to our table to at least take our drink orders. Needless to say, we left. The restaurant was not very busy at all, so I'm not sure why we were ignored for over 20 minutes. I don't think I'll be going back any time soon.

I took family members visiting from the east coast here for brunch. I had never been tp the terrace room, despite several years of admiring the beautiful old building while jogging arouns lake merritt. I was pleased to find that there was one vegan option on the brunch menu, a tofu scramble. It was loaded with fresh, perfectly cooked veggies. My dad had biscuits and gravy, which he liked but which he thought would normally come with sausage instead of bacon. Being veggie, I really wouldnt know. My stepmom had the french toast, which looked awesome and had fresh fruit.

The place has the most amazing view but the kitchen is not up to snuff. Keeping in mind that the reataurant is in Oakland giving it acess to great ingredients the place needs major help with it's food. Starting from the beginning the bread was incredibly boring (no excuse with so many great local bakeries, some very close to the place. I ordered the salmon. The give you a very generous portion but it was very overcooked and so dry it was hard to eat. My friend got the steak which didn't seem like a great cut of meat. We both enjoyed our sides, brocoli rabe and mashed potatoes and the dessert was fine and also large. It just seems like the place really needs an overhaul. The menu needs to be updated both menu & decor.
