View and ambiance was very nice. Good place for a meeting. Food good, not fabulous, but pricing good. Service was terrible. Had to get up from the table several times to find the waitress to take our drink order, our food order, to get a drink refill, to order coffee, to get check. When we complained to the manager got "Sorry, we are busy today." They weren't...tables empty. Took over 2 hours for lunch and we ordered only one course.

  • We were fairly disappointed

We were fairly disappointed with our brunch. We have had brunch here before and it was great, but this time it was off. We were hoping to show our SF friends a great Oakland experience and this fell short. No butter with the grits and they were fairly tasteless, the home fried potatoes were overcooked and also tasteless, and the Classic Joe had just a piece or two of spinach and was also bland. Chintzy butter on the English muffin. I was afraid to ask our friends how theirs was, they didn't seem to enjoy their meals and we were too embarrassed by our choice of restaurant. We may come back to enjoy the view and hope this was just one bad experience, but won't bring friends back.

This was my third time brunching at the Terrace Room, after first being introduced to the place as the location of a friend's wedding reception. The location by the Lake and view of the Lake are perfect, and although they have a small menu, they had something for everyone (hearty, meaty options, vegan options, and sweet and savory brunch items). Everyone in my party really liked their food. There were also a pianist and standing bassist playing jazz in the background. I'll definitely go for brunch again!

Food was okay. Roast beef was good. Some of the other side dishes were too dry. Live band was nice, not too noisy. Mainly seniors eating at the restaurant. Felt a little out of place with our 5 year old. We were probably the youngest family there for dinner. Waitress seemed friendly but did not return our credit card and we left without realizing it! We left 2 messages about our missing card but no one bothered to call us back.

  • It was Thanksgiving day

Today, Thanksgiving, I came the Terrace Room for the first time. I was impressed by the staff's professionalism and the extra effort in hospitality The food was good. Even though they automatically add 15% gratuity to your bill, I tacked on another 5% because of the exceptional service. The only reason I did not give this restaurant five stars is because I thought the food overpriced. Their web site lists meals as $30 or less. My bill came out to a total of $69, including one drink. It's a good thing I came with an empty stomach because I pigged out on second servings and desserts.

I realize that restaurants serving buffets don't want you to have a doggy bag as it encourages you to pile on the food, however, I went back for a taste of the salmon and more of the wonderful steamed vegetables including brussel sprouts. I must have taken a 2 ounce portion of salmon (I cut it in half with the spatula before putting it on my plate) and two tables spoons of vegetables. Being a Weight Watcher, I realized my eyes were bigger than my stomach after one bite of salmon. (My first plate was average 2 oz beef, 2 oz turkey My waiter brought box to a couple at the table next to us. I asked for a box I was refused. I was told they were resident. Hotel was not serving supper. I hated to see my food thrown away, yet I was denied a box.

Terrace Room has great environmental qualities. The room os all glass and has a stupendous view of the Lake and passing scene. Its very light and open. There was a man playing the piano and singing old 50's tunes by people like Nat King Cole. The Music was beautiful. The price for lunch including 2 strong cocktails was super reasonable. We had burgers, which were tasty, But the reason to go to The Terrace Room is for the atmosphere. I was told that Friday nights there is live jazz and dancing. I will go back again and again. Remember the food is okay, really good enough, but the room and music is the star of the show.

Once a nightclub, now a slightly faded but still classy dining room for the residence hotel, Terrace Room has a revamped kitchen that is doing some outstanding meat dishes. Food is not fancy in concept, but neither is it fashionably scant. The salads lightly dressed (yes!); the lamb tenderloin, flatiron steak, and pork cutlet were nicely handled. Note that kitchen tends towards the more well-done side; I specified "rare side of medium-rare" and it came a perfect MR, whereas spouse's "medium-rare" came to the more done side. It's a good, modestly priced meal with fine grilled meats and properly dressed salads; plus a great view and classy old surroundings.

I will be happy to give a review. I had checked the luncheon menu ahead of time. That menu did not appeal to me. It is OK if you want a salad for lunch. OK if you like burgers. I saw nothing that appealed to me. I took my two guests there because the dining room is pleasant, the view is great, and it was a short walk for me. The cream of mushroom soup was very tasty, but high on calories. I will return for brunch sometime, but not for lunch until there are more interesting items on the menu. a guest on Oct. 17. 2013

Unbeknownst to us, the Terrace Room is also the dining room for the seniors living in the hotel, not a retirement facility. That was a pleasure, not detraction. The servers and hosts were all the more kind and friendly. The food was NOT institutional in any way--the salads were fresh and well-constructed, the fish and chips crisp and not greasy, the pasta tossed with a tasty melange of vegetables and peaches. Delicious.

The Terrace Room formerly of the Lake Merritt Hotel is a lovely room with a great view of Lake Merritt. Parking is a definitive issue as street parking is all that is available. The menu is eclectic and the selections are very good and the portions are good size. My lunch guest and I split an Ahi salad that was more than enough for each of us and very tasty. The dressing was especially nice. the Chicken Vegetable puree and Tomato Bisque soups were delicious. It was nice to be served a soup that was not clam chowder on a Friday afternoon. Neither of us had wine as my guest was working and I was driving. The coffee was very good and the service friendly, prompt and, courteous. The hostess was very congenial and efficient..

We are getting married at the Terrace Room on August 17th and went for a final taste of the menu, to really get a sense of what it was like to enjoy a meal there. It was as expected -- beautiful views of Lake Merritt, great, welcoming service, and excellent food by Chef Neil. The salmon and the pork loin were what we had Friday night, and they were excellent. The salmon was perfectly done, with a vermouth garlic butter that enhances the flavor without being overpowering. The pork loin is extremely flavorful with its fruit-based topping. We already knew we loved the mushroom ravioli from a previous visit. Can't wait for the wedding!

Intimate dining experience if not set next to a large group. Great views no matter where sitting in the restaurant. Brunch menu was only shown at 2:00 pm on a Sunday, when we thought there would be a different menu. Busy, so the waiter was stretched to give good attention; his busboy should have been more attentive to such things as refills and delivering the bread sampler. Food was delivered warm and presented appetizingly. Wish we had known there was live music prior to 2 pm; as we would have come earlier to just listen to the band and had a cocktail before eating. Have eaten here for brunch, lunch & dinner and had good food and great service; so we won't let one set-back keep us for going again.

I have come for brunch four weekends in a row with different friends each time, and all agree that the combination of good food and the view of the lake make for a very enjoyable dining experience. The morning muffins they start you off with are a nice treat while looking over the menu, which offers a good variety. The chicken chilaquiles was a bit spicy, but still delicious. My fave so far is the crab and brie scramble. The good food, great view and friendly staff is why I will be back again.

This is a pleasant restaurant, not a late night place, although the cocktails are good and there is a very good disc jockey on weekends. The best thing about this restaurant was our server. She was attentive, personable and allowed me to change my glass of wine after it was poured. also people watching. we sat near the window overlooking Lake Merritt, beautiful view. but the carpets are tattered, there were crumbs all around the table and we were seated before 6. Food very average, my husbands seafood gumbo looked like it had canned shrimp in it. I would return for cocktails and the view, not the food.

Although we did up the diner count from 8 to 10 guests, the table was not ready at the time of our reservation, and we were seated about 30 minutes late. It would be nice for the menu to be a little more descriptive and possibly even add one or two more brunch item choices. But the food was very good.
