Food was excellent. Atmosphere perfect. We had a table right next to the Gore river. Our waiter was not the greatest. Was not very friendly and we felt like he was in a hurry and had no time for us. I think his name was Jason. Other than that, a top notch place.

This has always been our favorite restaurant in Vail. However, it was a disappointment this trip. Food was good, but not outstanding as is usually is, service was poor, NEVER have we had bad service before. Even the toffee dessert that is our favorite tasted like it was left over from the day before....very dense and somehow dry. Hopefully, it was just a bad day, because this restaurant is usually OUTSTANDING.

We had a great dining experience - service, food and wine were all at the top. This is an upscale restaurant that offers a three course dinner menu at a fixed price and there are wonderful selections for every course. Highly Recommended for a wonderful dining experience. We always make it to Sweet Basil when we go to Vail. It is our favorite restaurant in Colorado. Food, atmosphere, staff,--they even manage to accommodate kids and larger parties along with the couples and everyone seems happy. They recently expanded space and it is a good thing. More people to enjoy it.

My wife and I ate dinner there for our anniversary and everything was GREAT! The food was perfectly cooked and if you save room for dessert I recommend their recommended dessert, the Toffee Cake!! Another suggestion would be to sit in the back so that you can have the view of the river. Next time I am back in Vail I will be sure to go back to Sweet Basil. A great experience!

I had a most enjoyable experience. I was dining alone due to flight delays, etc. of friends but was really glad I was alone as I met interesting people, had an amazing dinner and enjoyed the staff. The food was superb, as well the unique wine list and desserts. My friends had highly recommended Sweet Basil as a "must eat" in Vail and I would most definitely highly recommend it to others!

My two girlfriends and I have been having dinner at Sweet Basil at least once a year for the last ten years. The food and the service have declined in the last few years. When my girlfriend asked about a glass of chardonnay that she was unfamiliar with and decided to order it the waiter later commented, "Yeah, you like that wine that you were balking about because of the price." My wine had a bug in it and we had to flag someone down to get a new glass of wine. We will be taking our business to The Wildflower on our next trip to Vail.

Great place! Being that I am not a West Coast "foodie" with the benefit of dozens and dozens of high-quality, unique dining choices, this was a fabulous culinary experience. If you are an LA or NY food snob that likes to pick apart every nuance of a four-course food and wine pairing, then maybe you want to look around. For the other 99.9999% of the dining public, this place is first rate. Don't pass on Sweet Basil (like we almost did) based on a few ridiculous reviews from people that like to impress others by unilaterally trashing established restaurants because they are not the newest, trendiest, mega-infused option in town. Lame, embarrassing and obvious. Relax out there my friends - it's all good. Enjoy!!

  • Sweet Basil has for many years
    OpenTable Diner Since 2006VIP
    Dined on 4/3/2008
Sweet Basil has for many years been my favorite restaurant in the Vail Valley. On this past visit the food was as good as ever. The wine list was overpriced (the same bottle at Spago's in Bachleor Gulch was 15% less the previous night) but that has been the reality for a long time. I guess we caught our waiter on an off-night because the balance of professionalism and friendliness we normally encounter at Sweet Basil was lacking. The service was fine just a bit cold. It was just a very minor annoyance at a long-time favorite.

The portions are MINISCULE and it is EXTREMELY warm in there. It is a shame because the food is very well prepared, but a 4oz portion of fish as a main course just does not cut it!! The restaurant is gorgeous and the service is really wonderful. WORK ON THOSE PORTION SIZES GUYS, we're not just fly by night tourists we frequent your estabishment every year, make us happy.

Over all, an excellent dining experience. Very good out of the ordinary culinary experience. Our server was professional and very attentive to our needs. Sweet Basil is a renound and probably most reputable restaurant in Vail. If one wish to have a table, it is best to reserve a table ahead of time. The place is allways full and one have little chance of finding a table just by showing up at the door. We loved it and will keep it on our restaurant must do any time we are in Vail.

Have been eating at Sweet Basil for over 10 years and has always been a favorite. On most recent trip 3/28/08, significant over salting of everything we ordered, and also too rich...trend toward unhealthy food preparation with no good options. Limited fresh vegetable choices (green beans or brussel sprouts, the latter being inedible). VERY different from past experiences. What has changed here??? Will give it one more chance.

We enjoyed the meal and the service was just great. By the way, what is a "foodie"? None of the categories you list above seem to fit this restaurant - it was just a nice, pleasant ambience, and worth the cost. Actually, I would never select any of the categories you list above to describe any restaurant I go to - the category titles seem either silly or pretentious...

A stalwart for the over 50 Vail crowd (isn't that most of them?), but I still like to go there for the terrific food. Even with the '08 expansion, it is great. Appetizer portions can be small (ie bone marrow, but unusual just the same), though the Beef Carpaccio was the best I have ever had, and served two+. I have been coming here for about 8 yrs and always will fit it in my schedule every time, so should you.
