While Laurel was our favorite, we decided to try Hexagone. With reservations I expected the table would be ready before seating us, but we were taken to a table without place settings. The service was attentive and kind, the wine list for "by the glass" lacking in information and detail. Wine list should list flavors of the wine. The menu had many options but the descriptions were non-existent. Definitely fix that. People like to read about their dish and it helps make a decision. The Tenderloin, perfect! The Veal with Marsala; was flat. We ended up getting Cabernet sauce and putting it on the Veal. I'm waiting for someone to come up with a dessert menu that is more than creme brulee and apple tart; Passion fruits, lemons try it!

We had a lovely and most enjoyable experience with Hexagone, starting with the convenient online reservation, a gracious maitre d', an excellent and personable waiter, and superb food. I mentioned a birthday in my reservation, but nothing could have improved on the chocolate souffles to complete the evening.

The Ravioli and the special scallop dish that day were terrific. The chocolate pots de creme was the best I've ever eaten. It was such a plus to eat in a restaurant with ambiance and so serene that you could actually carry on a conversation with your tablemate. I will definitely frequent Hexagone when I'm looking for a special dining experience.

We went to Hexagone for my birthday dinner before an event at the Civic Center. The food was delicious and the staff was very accommodating and friendly. Just a clean and happy place! Getting from there to the theater was a snap. Its now one of my favorites that I suggest to my family, friends and clients.

My Husband and I chose Hexagone to celebrate our Anniversay, prior to attending a play at the Old Globe. We ordered wine, (05 Chateau Montelena Cab $60) appetizers, entrees and dessert. We were very pleased will all of our food except the Lobster Bisque, which tasted more like tomato soup. The crabcake in Phillo was good, but I thought the menu should have stated the type of crab, as when you are expecting lump crab, shredded (blue or stone) crab is quite different. We had Rack of Lamb, Duck Breast with Leg Confit, both were excellent. Our dessert, Chocolate Mousse, was unusual for a mousse, but delicious. The service was exceptional. We ate early, so the restaurant was not busy, and we found the staff to be very attentive.

We have been there three times: the first two the food was excellent. On this recent visit, the food was just OK: there is apparently a new chef or a new one cooking that evening and he was not nearly as good as whomever was at the helm on our previous visits.

  • Our evening out at Hexagone

    Dined on 6/13/2009
Our evening out at Hexagone was perfect in every way. The restaurant is lovely; an upscale bistro. I started out with a salad that was truly an appetizer size. Starter salads are typically way too large; this was the right amount so that I could look forward to my next course which was short ribs. They were outstanding, never needed to use my knife. The service was very efficient, enough time between courses. And he never failed to pour our wine just before the glass was empty. We'll be back very soon.

This was my second visit to Hexagone for a business lunch; and I was disappointed compared to my first visit at dinner. The green salad was limp and the Coq a Vin was a disappointment and uninspired. My guest said the French Onion soup was first class and there was plentiful french bread and butter supplied by the wait staff. I would give them another try based on the first visit, restaurant ambiance, location and attentative staff. Everybody has a bad day once in awhile. Note location and parking for lunch is first rate for downtown business entertainment.

I should have sent back the lobster bisque - it was terrible. Too much tomato, too much pepper, bitter... The caesar salad has green apple in it. Why? The braised lamb shank was not seasoned, the beans (in what was called cassoulet) were tough and the presentation was boring. We will not go back to this restaurant.

    Dined on 2/14/2009
Good Valentine's Day dinner at French Market Grille, a restaurant we have found to be very dependable in past. Food very good, priced appropriately. Since we have been there a few times, we know some of staff by sight, and those folk are good - glitch was the waiter we had this evening was painfully inexperienced, the sort of kid that gives San Diego a bad name nationwide when it comes to service at fine dining establishments. Fortunately for us, other wait staff pitched in to keep the evening tolerable, although at one point I had to leave the table to hunt for silverware. Would go there again, but really recommend to Patrick (owner of this one and Hexagone) to really scrutinize hiring better. Will go again despite the glitch.

The food was good, the table was ready when we arrived, the service was adequate but the temperature of the food was presented much too cool for such a nice restaurant. The desserts were nothing to brag about and we were offered dessert OR coffee. Why not both? I love it when the server says the plate is hot don't touch but the food is cool. Oh well, it was convenient Christmas meal and so much less expensive than last year's in Georgetown DC.

Despite having mentioned that it was our 20th Wedding Anniversary celebration, we were summarily ignored upon arrival. I had to interrupt one of the waiters to ask how to register my arrival. The response was rude with a terse "I'll be with you in a minute!" The five of us cooled our heels for 20 to 25 minutes before our table was ready. Believe me, that was a violation of cardinal rule number one for a restaurant that took a booking! The food, when it was at last served, was good. We had to request bread even though other tables were given bread on first contact. My kids ordered sodas which were served in wine glasses. We had to ask for refills. There are too many places from which to choose to have to endure a brush-off like that!
