Intimate without being crowded, soothing lighting without needing flashlights, and superb food wide-ranging despite a limited menu, the Moss Room is the perfect antidote to a day of busy sightseeing, museum-hopping, or even just a weekday escape. Three of my party had hearing problems, and we all could hear each other easily. It was perfect for the bicoastal reunion we wanted, time to catch up, impress our New York foodie friends, relax and hang out as long as we wanted, and the chocolate- peanut butter cake made my chocaholic friend swoon. Highly recommended for civilized people with good palates who also want to converse.

I'll be back again. The Moss Room has great potential and its location in the Academy of Science is stellar. I was hoping for an amazing experience w/the Phans in control (re: Slanted Door) but the food, and the wine selection, was spotty. The shrimp salad was small, barely shrimpy and the dressing had no zing. The zinfandel too was flat tasting with no middle and a sweaty finish (ugh). I liked the mussels but when I mentioned it was cold the server did not offer to warm it up for me. My friend LOVED his sole on wild rice entree, though. Maybe it was just the afternoon lull (2-3p)? There were only 3 or 4 other tabletops and it was hard to get the wait staffs attention ... again, spotty. Sorry.

The Moss Room is expensive for what you get, which is not much. Salads were good, but main courses skimpy. and dessert was ridiculously small. The room was cold and had a damp feeling, probably from the open aquarium and ferny wall that gets "rain" once in a while. "Green" and "sustainable" should not mean expensive and uncomfortable.

My wife and I recently went for lunch. The atmosphere was ok, and there were lots of familys with children. I had a small skirt steak, and a bowl of chowder with the smallest slice of pie you can imagine for dessert, and it was $33, My wife had a bowl of chowder and a small shrimp salad with a small fruit turnover for dessert,..also $33. After a couple of drinks and tip, the bill was over $100,...and it certainly did not feel like a $100 lunch. Everything served was "small sized" portions. It was too much money for what you get to eat.

I booked lunch for my mother in law to go with my husband and my two children, 9 and 7, on Satuday. Our children were well-behaved. However, there is a table near by with a child and he constantly run over to look at fish and got into our space over and over and his parents just watched and did nothing. (He could have looked at the fish from another vacant space, but he just choose to intrude us. ) I quoted my husband - This is annoying when you're trying to have a quiet meal. That's why we didn't eat at the upstairs cafe. Kids are allowed to run wild. That should be unacceptable at an expensive restaurant. Food and service is fine. It is too child friendly even for me who has young children and know how to behave when at a nicer place.

Great food and service. We ordered the 3 course meal, which I'm glad we did. The dessert portions are EXTREMELY small, so I would not recommend getting dessert from this restaurant. Also, contrary to how it's advertised, it only has 1 living wall and the rest is just nice decor. I had the Olive Chicken and would highly recommend it.

My BFF and I had lunch here on a Saturday. Yummy food, great service, all while looking at giant fish swimming in the gorgeous aquarium right next to our table! The wall was a living green wall filled with ferns and the namesake moss. Lovely quiet romantic spot. The table next to us had a young child around 10 who had cotton candy for dessert!

Our reservation was promptly, although oddly, honored...hostess needs to escort guests through the CA Academy of Sciences. We selected the three course lunch menu with a nice clam chowder, entree of choice, and dessert. One of us had the trout with forbidden rice and the other the mushroom pasta. Both were very well prepared with fresh ingredients and of good portion size. Desserts were especially innovative; a delicious apple and black walnut turnover with blue cheese. Wine list was adequate and each of us found a glass to accompany the meal. Service was well timed and patrons interested in quickly returning to the Academy or having another cup of coffee seemed well taken care of.

We enjoyed Moss on a previous visit. Thought it was to become a destination restaurant for the city, but that won't be possible with the difficulty involved in getting inside the restaurant. Found the menu uninspired, the service friendly and willing but a bit clueless, the living wall looking sad, and the food rather bland. What has happened to this place? The museum seems to be wanting to shut it down. Oh, and no bread offered with soup and pasta prominent on the menu? We were sorry to see the creativity and sparkle missing from what had seemed a unique place.

Arrived a little early but, this was no problem. With literally no delay we were shown to our table. We ordered the clam chowder as our starter, which was very good. For our main course we had the chicken and polenta with seasonal vegetables. The service was good, the day we visited there were a few large group, that we're a little noisy, but overall an enjoyable experience.

A welcome break from the crowds upstairs. Serene, relaxing, excellent service and good portions of very well-prepared food. A very wide beverage selection from mixed drinks, to beer and wine. We enjoyed Caprese salad, the cheese plate, a burger and salmon as well as the cocktail special, a beer and two glasses of wine. Service by our waitress, the hostess and the bus staff was terrific, attentive but not intrusive. All the food was top notch- very flavorful and very fresh tasting.

Unless you are patronizing the museum, getting to the Moss is a round about journey lead by one of the restaurant staff. I must say that the staff was very accommodating and pleasant. The interior of the Moss is so dark: below ground, no windows, and brown wood/paint. Menu uninspired and rather expensive. The roasted vegetables were very good and enough for two people.

Even though it's located in the Academy of Sciences, we expected a quality dining experience, having spent $60 on lunch for two. The chef is from the Slanted Door, which we love. But the very tiny serving of salmon was overdone and dry. The ambiance might have been more pleasant at another table, but they've placed the maitre d's podium at at the base of the stairs instead of the head. Our table was surrounded by waiting patrons while we ate our dry salmon. So sad. Wish I'd brought a picnic for our day at the Academy instead.

The food was good but not notable in any way. No artistry here: just formula upscale meals. And very stingy with the expensive ingredients. I paid $30 for a lunch menu: tiny salad, a tiny piece of fish (they insisted it was 4 ounces), but plenty of potatoes and a big slab of "chocolate torte" that was heavy on the flour and sugar and not worth the calories to eat. It isn't about the food: it's about the location, and the money. But if you're visiting CAS over lunch and you have money and don't like noisy cafeterias, eat here.

The only negative was when a couple came in with two kids who were allowed to run in the rocks along the fish tank and even throw one into the tank. In my opinion, parents should be required to keep their kids close at hand when dining in such a nice restaurant. These incidents did detract from our overall experience.

Moss Room is a not a match to its location. The menu is overpriced and not unique. A few small grilled shrimp with a mound of greens for $19 at lunch seems extreme. You can't make a restaurant elevate to posh just by overcharging. We really did not see how this "Slanted Door" menu will make it in a venue like the Academy of Sciences. This is not a hidden gem. Needs a menu revamp. A small dish selection for the lunch offering would step-up the interest levels. Service was outstanding. Setting was quiet and relaxing. Imperial spring rolls, please.
