View wonderful. Menu degustation. Prawn dish excellent 9/10. Crab and monkfish 8/10. Duck and lamb was one meat dish too many for my taste, but both were perfectly cooked (8/10). The cheese course was dull and bland (except for the honey/sultana thing, which I liked)(5/10). The soufflé with crème anglaise was brilliant (10/10).

This was a FANTASTIC meal. The restaurant accommodated our requests for changes to the tasting menu when there was something we just didn't eat. The service was wonderful. The kitchen did not miss on ONE course... all tasting menus have a weak spot... this one didn't. The server worked with our request for mini wine pairings. All in all, it should be listed as one of the top 40 on Gayot.

  • Our waiter was savey enough
    OpenTable Diner Since 2008
    Dined on 8/2/2008
Our waiter was savey enough to ask if we had any food allergies when we first sat and then proceeded to serve the "chef's tasting" containing an ingredient that we had mentioned. When we brought it to his attention, he swooped the item away from the person in our party that has the allergy. While that was being replaced, we all sat with ours in front of us while another was prepared without the ingredient. Our guest suggested that we go ahead and eat, but since it was just a bite, we opted to wait. It mainly just irritated me for our waiter to specifically ask us about allergies and then not pay attention to what we said. This was the fourth time I have eaten at this restaurant, and as a couple our tab has never been under $300.

It was a late reservation, but the service was just fair for such an expensive place we expected for everything to be just outstanding. the food was pretty bad. I assume that the service was very tired, because there was opened bottles left right next to us from the previous table. the manager came and did not notice, the server came and did not notice, until I finally said to the server. "Should you not remove that?" it was not a goo dexperience. we had much better at Cooke's, The Black Pearl and Simpatico in Jamestown

    Dined on 7/26/2008
The four of us had dinner at the Spiced Pear recently and had a great time. We all ended up agreeing that although the menu is wonderful, you could be blindfolded pick a dish from the starters, entrees, and deserts, and would be perfectly contect. You can't go wrong with the menu. The only downside to our visit was that there was a private function on the terrace and so we were not able to dine outside. Not bad at all if that was the only negative. Waitstaff was great, we were left not wanting a thing, everything was performed with minimal fuss, and right on time. Would we go back? I am already planning on it, next time we will sit at the Chef's table. Bravo Spiced Pear, you made our only dinner in Newport very memorable.

What a gem! We sat on their outdoor terrace overlooking the beach and the ocean. The service was excellent. Very attentive staff. The food was delicious. I had a pasta dish that was beyond compare. I would recommend the Spiced Pear to anyone going to Newport (in fact, I have already done so). • The "GQ"- rated hamburger
    OpenTable Diner Since 2010VIP
    Dined on 7/19/2008
The "GQ"- rated hamburger should not be described as a hamburger. Kobe beef is very smooth and it was drowned in a rich sauce, more like meetloaf than a burger. The lobster roll was served with bacon that drowned out the lobster taste. Over -priced for the lousy food. With such a spectacular view and lovely inn it is a shame the food was a disapointment.

    OpenTable Diner Since 2007VIP
    Dined on 7/19/2008
A v. poor experience--greeting from outdoor hostess (blond, long hair) was off-puttingly unwelcoming--and service from server (young dark-haired woman) was also ridiculously amateur and unattentive. We ordered starters, mains and two bottles of wine--not a small check for lunch. At one point I had to retrieve our wine from a common cooler (full of water, not ice and shared with another table) and served my guests b/c the server was nowhere to be found. Food service also incredibly slow--30 min before she brought appetizers. Worst of all, the food was beyond mediocre--lobster roll made with frozen lobster--unthinkable experience for such a fine dining destination-they should be ashamed and I will never recommend to anyone!!!

The food was excellent, but we had to wait for quite a long while for the wine steward and once the wine was ordered we had another long wait for the wine. In fact, our dinner arrived before the wine. The staff clearly rushed to get the wine when they saw our food had arrived, but it was a big disappointment to have 2 such long delays in such an elegant restaurant. What added to the disappointment is that the evening was meant to be a special celebration and it fell rather flat fromt he lack of attention.

The view was excellent. My wife and I sat next to each other on one side of the table looking out at the beach to the left of us. Our waitress was very friendly and attentive. Rather than go for one of the tasting menus, we ordered an appetizer, entree, and desert seperately. My soft shell crab appertizer was very good. For entrees, we both ordered seared tuna, which was supposed to come with shrimp, which was one of the reasons we ordered it. Instead, it came with scallops, which we don't particularly like. When we mentioned to the waitress that it was supposed to come with shrimp, she simply said he made a change, but no offer to correct it. The entree was good but not great for the money. Given the choice, eat at Castle Hill instead.

The food was good but not great, particularly given the price. Presentation was lovely but not particularly inventive. I ate at Oleana in Cambridge the week before and found the food much better at half the price. Far more flavorful. Two people at our table had lobster and one of the dishes was missing all of the garnish that the other had. The table next to me ordered the same bass I had ordered and theirs was served up tableside while mine was not. I also had some bones in my fish which was surprising given the price of $44.. Would I go again??? Yes, if I were meeting someone in Newport but would not go out of my way.

The Spiced Pear is very impressed with itself. The went in thinking I was going to be paying for the extraordinary scenic view and I was right. The food was good and nothing more. Living right outside New York City we have access to many exceptional restaurants. I found the menu at The Spiced Pear very limited. I read a number of bad reviews about this restaurant, but I was willing to give it a chance believing that everyone has different experiences. Having read all the hype about this restaurant, imagine my surprise when I was seated and the first thing I saw was a dirty napkin wrapped around my silverware. The corn chowder I had was bland and the potatoes in it were practically raw. Should have gotten take out and sat on the cliff

We dined from the tasting menu paired with wine. The protions were far too large for a tasting menu and were from the regular menu. The service was terrible; we ordered two salads (no cooking required), and it took over 45 minutes to be prepared. The food and ambiance was lovely but the service was abominable. There were several wait staff around but they preferred to talk to each other rather than serve the clients. We noticed several other guests waiting upwards of 10 minutes to order drinks after they had sat down. With such a price tag on meals, the service must be better.

The food is just fantastic. There is a terrace you can dine on. Unknown to us the menu from the inside does not match the terrace. The view is wonderful. The meal is expensive, but worth every penny. I did not care for the dessert menu, my wife loved the selections. Too many sweet/chocolate items. Something salty/crunchy would have been nice. Possibly a fruit cup or the option of ice cream cup would be beneficial. Dessert aside, we'll be back.

The entire experience was just a joke, 45 minutes to get a drink during which we had already been served our appetizers. They couldn't find the keys to the wine cellar they told us. The glasses were dirty, the waiter had no idea what glasses to use, left us without silverware and after all that the food was definitely not to the standard one would expect for the price. If calamari can't be fried without a greasy taste and just mounded on a saucer without even a piece of lemon we would have done better at the Clam Shack down the road. When we left the valet was no where to be found despite waiting for several minutes, we opened the key closet and took our keys and drove away.
