A word from Kefi
Chef Michael Psilakis and partner Donatella Arpaia have moved their rustic Greek gem, Kefi, to a larger space at 505 Columbus Avenue. The new, 200-seat interior evokes the feeling of a palatial Greek hideaway broken up into several smaller dining rooms to keep Kefi’s intimate appeal.

The menu of favorites straight from Psilakis’ childhood will remain the same with some new additions. Signature dishes like Baccala, crispy-fried cod with garlic potatoes and tomato, Grilled Octopus with bean salad, and Hilopita, baked pasta with rabbit ragout and béchamel are still on offer. Additions include Grilled Sardines with chopped “Greek Salad” and garlic sauce, Macaronia Spestofai, tubular pasta with Greek sausage, peppers, onions, tomato and feta and an entirely new section of Greek Sandwiches featuring house-made sausages and pork and lamb gyro.

The food was excellent. The service was incredibly rushed, as it always is - the entrees inevitably come out before you're finished with the appetizers. Also, the service is pretty hit or miss. Sometimes the service is very attentive and sometimes it's simply awful. I keep going back for the food, though. Just don't expect too much in the way of ambiance.

Had 8:30 reservations, and we weren't seated until 9:20. We were repeatedly told that it would just be 10 more minutes...until it was 50 minutes later. We were seated in a corner downstairs where the tables were so close that we had to reposition our table so we could sit comfortably. Then, since it was so late, the dish I had been looking forward to (sheep's milk dumplings) was sold out. The service was super slow (20+ mins to get drinks & apps), which I'm sure was just because it was a busy night. The redeeming quality of the night was that food was good, so I'll be back, just not soon and not on a Saturday night.

The food was great and our waiter was wonderful. However, the hostesses were extremely rude and there was a 30 minute wait despite our reservations. In fact, several walk-ins were seated before we were! The reason for reservations is to avoid waiting but it doesn't seem to mean anything at Kefi. The system is highly disorganized and they clearly overbook. There were at least 40 people waiting! And the noise level was absolutely deafening! I ate there a few weeks ago and had similar problems (though not as bad Jan 17). After Saturday's repeat performance, I probably won't be back.

  • Kefi is the food lovers bargain
    OpenTable Diner Since 2005
    Dined on 1/17/2009
Kefi is the food lovers bargain of the century! Everything we tried was exceptional with fresh and zesty takes on greek home dishes. The price points are incredible -- it's a tremendous deal. $16 for braised lamb shank and orzo and about the same for outrageously delicious swordfish? I felt like I had stepped back in time! The wine list is all greek and again very reasonable. One jarring note -- Kefi may be a victim of its popularity. Crowds of people invaded the first floor dining room (no waiting area) before being seated and the aura was definitely hectic. Since this is a value play, tables are turned rather quickly so don't expect to linger over your coffee and walnut cake. Downstairs is much quieter but still fastpaced.

Our 7:30 PM (on a Saturday night)reservation was honored and the table was ready when we got there, despite the fact that the restaurant was busy. Our waiter was great and knowledgeable about the menu and the wine list. The food was good, but could have been hotter. The wine list was large.I believe all the wines were Greek. (I didn't know that there were so many Greek wines!) Most of the wines were moderately priced. Our waiter recommended several, and explained the wine regions of Greece and even talked about some of the wineries. The food came out quickly, but no one rushed us to leave the table, even though it appeared people were waiting. There was no real atmosphere and it was noisy. I would return.

    OpenTable Diner Since 2009

We were in New York on a seek and find 'great food mission'. Kefi made our palettes very happy. It was a Saturday leisurely lunch so the slow service was not too much of a problem...a little annoying after the first fifteen minutes of waiting to be acknowledged after we sat down, but forgiven after a taste of the sheeps milk dumplings. They melted in your mouth, and the spicy sausage in this dish was perfectly proportioned with just the right amount of heat to compliment this dish! Would definitely recommend Kefi. If service is a priority, try to go at a time when they are not accommodating large party's. Vereeee reasonably priced!!

The food is good - not great. The servers are amazing - how they maneuver in such a mob scene is beyond me. However, it is so disorganized that it isn't worth going. The front desk is in the back at the top of a set of stairs. You can hardly get to the receptionist to give your name. Then, if you wait at the bar they say they'll come get you - but they don't. The front is supposed to be for walk-ins but that is not clear. It needs help!

We were seated close to our reservation time. Tables are close together and noise level is fairly high but not cacaphonous. Lovely waitress gave us flawless advice about what to order (we had grilled octopus for an appetizer, sheep's milk ravioli, and grilled branzino). Everything, including cocktails, was delicious and interestingly prepared. The octopus was especially memorable. For dessert we had pomegranate sorbet and something with a long greek name that was phyllo dough and creaminess with citrus sauce, and it was delicious. Our only objections were that the restaurant was not designed to stay warm in cold weather and was very chilly and that we felt a little rushed afterward even though there were no longer people waiting for tables.

I've gone to this restaurant since it first opened as Onera on 79th Street. When it became Kefi (i.e. they lowered the prices, got rid of the table cloths, put more tables in the dining area) it became my "kitchen". That said, I frequent Kefi more than any other restaurant and I was very disappointed to learn that they were moving further from my home. The new place is nothing like the old, but they were smart in keeping the cost of the food down and keeping the quality high. Hats off to Michael, Kosta, and all the others who spent over a year in trying to open this new location, and I'm thrilled for them to be thriving.

The restaurant is huge, but that's only felt strongly near the entrance. Smaller sections have been created throughout that help make the place feel cozier, more like the original Kefi on 79th. The food is the same and it's delicious, but the wait was really long even with a reservation (30 minutes) and the service was rushed. I think things will calm down once it's not "new" anymore.

Description of the noise level as energetic is the understatement of the year. The food was good and prices were fantastic, the ambiance is wonderful, wait staff were great. Unfortunately, I go to restaurants not only to eat, but also to converse with my dining partner(s). The noise level made conversation impossible. We were both hoarse half way through the meal and gave up any attempt at conversation. For those who come to see and be seen, this is a great place.

Food is very tasty and reasonably priced. Biggest drawback is that they pack people in like sardines - very noisy and absolutely no privacy. Some ot hte tables are literally crammed into little nooks where food has to be pasesed over another diner's table to get to you. The food is still good at Kefi, but the scene is very, very busy now. It was very noisy and very crowded. The waitstaff struggled to get through all the people standing up and waiting for tables. We waited about 20 minutes after our reservation time on a Saturday night. It's a very different feel to the restaurant - still very good and reasonably priced, but there's definitely a part of me that misses the lower key atmosphere of the 79th street location.

The restaurant is cavernous and on a Saturday night, all three levels were packed. The noise level was exceptionally high and we sat downstairs amidst very large, filled tables. The food was inconsistent; the tzatziki (usually excellent in a Greek restaurant) was too garlicky to eat as were the mashed potatoes that accompanied the crisy cod fritters. The Greek salad was shredded iceberg lettuce that was soggy. The two fish dishes that we had (striped bass and grilled branzino) were perfectly cooked and very tasty. The kids menu had typical child friendly food that was passable. We didn't eat dessert and were happy to leave. The service was good once we finally got some (we had to find out waiter when we first arrived).

The food is very good and, at least for the time being, very inexpensive. Tables are close together and the noise level is very high, especially on the upper floor which is at ground level. The lower floor, which, they told us is used for those with reservations is more attractive and a little less noisy. Although Kefi is new in its larger location, it is already extremely popular and very crowded, as it should be, given the quality of the food and the low prices.

Kefi was very disappointing. The food was average and too many items were covered in a thick sauce and served over the same tired bean salad. It didn't remind me of the wonderful straightforward food we had this summer in Greece. To top it all off, the bus person put our soiled appetizer cutlery back on the table for us to reuse for our main course. It all felt very lazy. We wont be running back.
