A word from Kefi
Chef Michael Psilakis and partner Donatella Arpaia have moved their rustic Greek gem, Kefi, to a larger space at 505 Columbus Avenue. The new, 200-seat interior evokes the feeling of a palatial Greek hideaway broken up into several smaller dining rooms to keep Kefi’s intimate appeal.

The menu of favorites straight from Psilakis’ childhood will remain the same with some new additions. Signature dishes like Baccala, crispy-fried cod with garlic potatoes and tomato, Grilled Octopus with bean salad, and Hilopita, baked pasta with rabbit ragout and béchamel are still on offer. Additions include Grilled Sardines with chopped “Greek Salad” and garlic sauce, Macaronia Spestofai, tubular pasta with Greek sausage, peppers, onions, tomato and feta and an entirely new section of Greek Sandwiches featuring house-made sausages and pork and lamb gyro.

We came for restaurant week, absolutely loved my octopus salad and branzino. Everything was very well done and presented. The one thing I didn't love was the wine selection, we tried a few and weren't crazy about any of them.

Overall a big disappointment. Although my appetizer spreads and entree lamb burger were good, the restaurant overall was not very clean. Tables for two were ridiculously small. In addition, the restaurant is very dingy. We were seated in the basement part of the restaurant which was dismal to say the least yet super crowded and noisy. It could have a better ambiance. The bar was the more brighter and vibrant part of the restaurant. By far the wait staff was horrible, our entree's were served and nothing cleared from the prior course. Difficult to see who was doing what, just too confusing.

You don't have to travel to Astoria or go to a diner for a solid Greek meal. We were greeted warmly and seated in a quiet area of the spacious restaurant. The service was attentive. Large menu, including a variety of specials. We started with the Meze Greek spread which was excellent, served with toasted pita(nb they charged for a refill of this). The yogurt was particularly flavorful. My spinach, feta omelette was cooked perfectly and served in the skillet. My friends salads were copious and tasty. We lingered long after paying the tab and felt welcome. Worth another visit.

The food here is consistently outstanding. The dumplings are out of this world if you're feeling decadent, or a light grilled fish is always delicious & healthy. The wines are just alright, but the bartender mixes a great cocktail. The place is always bustling and can feel a bit packed, but the attention to detail in the food & service excuse the large parties and rows upon rows of tables which can make the experience less than special.

My husband and I had been meaning to try this place. We came all the way from Wiliamsburg and it was worth it! Some suprising items, the octopus was delish! The Greek wine list a welcome change from the norm you see everywhere else. Service was attentive but not overbearing. Overall really lovely experience.

Eating at Kefi would have been a far more pleasant experience if the place weren't jammed to the gills. Diners were seated practically on top of one another, destroying any possibility for a real that conversation. My boyfriend has a hearing disability, and combined with the noise made it almost impossible to communicate at all. The servers also seemed confused. We (as well as both couples on either side of us) received food we hadn't ordered. While our server was very quick to correct the mistake(s), there was an air of perpetually impending mix-up.

Food was excellent. Service was very good. Only some minor hiccups. We were sat at the back of the restaurant where staff was moving in and out with plates. I'd recommend asking for a table at the front of the restaurant to avoid this. We didn't have olive oil on our table while everyone else did and didn't notice until the bread was gone. Bummer. There were also some screaming children, but I suppose that's the case with the Upper West Side. All in fantastic food. Loved the spreads, grilled octopus, branzino and the delicious white wines from Greece. We will be back when in that neighborhood.

Just as we remembered, food is why you go to Kefi, somehow, there is always a reason the floors are slippery, this trip, ladies room out of commission, and crying kids are tolerated. If the house was run as well as the kitchen, you would never be able to get in.

This is a very pretty restaurant, unless you sit in the downstairs backroom which feels like you are in a basement. The rest of the basement is nice though. Upstairs is VERY noisy. Hate to say this, but as far as the food goes, all the people giving this place rave reviews must not be Greek because if you are, this is the worst Greek food you could hope to find. The tzatziki was good if you like dill, but everything else was bad to horrible.

I am so glad I discovered this restaurant in my neighborhood. Gluten Free! Such a relief to find a place that has so many GF options. The food seems to celebrate the freshness of it's ingredients. The wait staff is friendly and attentive. Kefi is one of my new favorite UWS restaurants.

I found it good but not as good as I anticipated. My companion said she would return and she didn't even like her meal, not the restaurants fault she didn't realize how much tomato sauce would be on lamb shank. I've only had it in wine before.the sauce was not indicated on menu. service was very attentive and the ambience was fine. surprised a little dog was seated next to us with no service dog ID but I like dogs so I didn't mind

The food was great, however we didn't notice that in fact it would be cheaper to order the same menu items withiut the restaurant week menu, which is unacceptable. Also in spite of having reservation we had to wait over 10 min for our table and were sitted on the bottom floor in an ugly room that felt like a cheap hotel dining room. They shouldn't even have this room- bad design, bad acustics, no natural light.

We visited Kefi for the first time because of NYC Restaurant Week. This place has 3 different eating areas. We were seated promptly at the lower level, which would have benefitted from additional air conditioning. One of the 3 of us wanted to order from the prix fix menu, but wasn't allowed to do so unless one other person also ordered from that menu. The service was attentive, though too attentive for my needs. When plates are removed from the table before others in your party are finished eating, it gives you the message that they want you out of the restaurant as soon as possible. The food is prepared well, but there are many Greek restaurants that have comparable food. If you don't live in the neighborhood, don't go out of your way.

The Place: The location is great (West 80's). Restaurant decor could use a little work, the place looked a little sad, not very "Grecian." We were seated below the main floor in a "basement" for lack of a better word, even though there were plenty of seats available up top. As a result we were next to the hustle and bustle of the wait staff going in and out of the kitchen, which wasn't the best dinning experience. The Food: I had the Kefi Salad and the Sheeps Milk Ravioli which were very tasty. The portion size of the appetizers seemed a little too large. My friends had the meatballs as an appetizer and were nearly full before they got to the entree. The Service: The service at Kefi is somewhere between good and so-so. 3 and 1/2 Stars.

Walked into a mob scene as we passed the bar to the go to the hostess. She was confused and had to get help to figure out where to seat us. Wow was it noisy and crowded. We actually pointed to an empty table and we were reluctantly seated there. The server was a dud. Overworked, confused, apologetic. She never asked us what we wanted to drink. When we finally requested wine and waited for 20 minutes, had to get up to find her, she told us that they were out of glasses. Are you kidding me! The manager finally came over and we were given a free glass of wine. Really now. Food was good. Bad experience. Not worth the time or effort. There are many Greek and Turkish restaurants that make you feel welcome. This was not one of them.

We ordered the Crispy Calamari and Grilled Octopus & Bean Salad for appetizers, and Hanger Steak and Sheep Milk Dumplings for entrees. Suffice to say, we ended up stuffed and satisfied. Kefi is an almost perfect restaurant for me - the food was amazing, the scene was bustling, prices reasonable, but I was still able to get a Sat night reservation the day before. Our server was a bit inattentive (we got our apps before our cocktails, had to ask for the bread, and waited awhile for the check) but other tables around us were getting fine service. All in, we would go back and we would take friends there.
