I brought a friend to Poesia for his birthday dinner. The meal was exquisite. The blood orange martini and the scallop risotto were standouts in a meal that was already great. The service was friendly, knowledgeable and attentive. Even the other guests were welcoming. It was a delightful all around.

This place is great, although the seating is a little crowded. We got there and the place was only 1/3 full, but they seated us so close to the next group that we had to move our table just to sit down without our backs touching theirs. It was strange, since there was room all over the place. But the food was great and the service was nice (albeit a little sycophantic)

This is one of my favorite restaurants in the Castro and among my favorite Italian restaurants in the city. The atmosphere is inviting, cozy and romantic, yet also festive and enjoyable for a larger group. They have a full bar, which is a nice addition for an intimate place such as this. The staff are very professional and knowledgeable about the menu and wines. The menu is small but changes seasonally. Currently the tomato soup is the best I've had in a restaurant. It's thick and rich, deep red, with chunks of tomato and parmesan cheese. My favorite dish here, an occasional special, is the whole roasted fish. As good as any I've had on a Mediterranean coast. Their pastas are also unique, ample in portion, and delicious.

We enjoyed a somewhat early seating (6:30) on a Sunday evening. Things were fairly quiet when we arrived but became significantly noisier as the evening wore on. The food was excellent but portions were modest for the price. Dinner for 5 with one bottle of Italian Barbera ($36), salad, entree, 2 shared desserts and 2 coffees was $300 including a 15% tip. Our server was a very enthusiastic Italian who was very helpful in entree selection and wine pairing. Nice ambiance. An after dinner stroll in the Castro is, as always, a great addition to an evening out with friends.

Yummy homemade pastas. Our waiter was excellent, very personable and charming. Prices are a little high but the quality is high too. We hade a wonderful Barbera wine suggested by our waiter. The place is cozy and charming. Only concern is that not all food was hot enough-especially the eggplant, which was barely lukewarm. Otherwise an excellant neighborhood gem.

This place is amazing! The atmosphere is quaint and comfortable. The staff are friendly and make you feel at home. The food is delicious. I had a cod fish appetizer that was amazing, both the tomato and chick pea soup were delicious, and I loved the Orecchiette al Forno! And, you have to try the chocolate mousse. It has rock salt on top and is drizzled with olive oil. The Castro was in need of a nice sit down restaurant. Thank you Poesia.

It has been about 6 months since I had last eaten at Poesia and it seems most of the kinks have been worked out. The dishes that I and my dining partner had were all executed and presented very well. Taking in the entire experience, the ONLY real suggestion I have is one element that has been consistent since my first visit to Poesia - the food is underseasoned. There are a lot of great flavours, just waiting to pop, but it just doesn't happen due to a lack of adequate seasoning - specifically, salt (with the exception of the Bacala.) If the seasoning was corrected it would change my 4 star rating to a 5. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Poesia, with this one caveat though.

Having spent a lot of time in Italy, I am usually disappointed by Italian restaurants in this country. But this is the real thing! Great classic Italian dishes along with innovative newer ones. Great service-Francesco and Mattia have always been so attentive and helpful the three times we have been there. Every time we have felt and tasted the joy that the Italians bring to the table. We live in Sonoma County and only get to SF once in a while; but this restaurant will be our first choice when we're there.

The venue is cute, cozy and in a good location. The staff was friendly, welcoming and entertaining and the food was GREAT! The eggplant parm is better than my mom's and hers is pretty darn good (sorry, mom). The only thing that I didn't love was the tiramisu. I am a huge fan of tiramisu and this one was sort of lemon flavored. A cool idea and not bad but I am just a huge fan of classic tiramisu so I was a little disappointed All in all a great spot and a great meal, I highly recommend.

This is a noisy, slapdash trattoria: the food has some merit, but not for the prices. We had: two cocktails, one appetizer, two entrees, one dessert, two espressos (the smallest in the city), and one bottle of wine ($38) and the bill came to $152.00 before tip. Thank goodness they forgot an entire course! Plusses: the staff is friendly and the food is genuine -- but you can get the equivalent in the same neighborhood at half the price! And it's very odd that the pastas are presented and priced as main courses, and the wine list is arranged in ascending order of price (so everything is intermixed).

A coworker who lives in the Castro raved about Poesia for weeks. I thought, it can't be THAT great. But it was. I expected heavy, cheese-laden Italian faire with the ubiquitous tomato sauce - the usual offerings. What we had was seasonally inspired dishes that were so light they could have rested on a cloud. The old Italian movies playing on the back wall was a nice touch. The wait staff were friendly, knowledgeable, and cute.

we went for a late dinner at 10:30, looking for a relatively quick, but proper meal. We got exactly what we were looking for. The staff struck the perfect balance between making sure we could take our time and moving the courses along. The highlight of the meal was the orecchiette pasta that we shared for our second course. We haven't had orecchiette like that since our last trip to Italy. Though it seems the noise level can be quite high, at 10:30pm, we got to enjoy the whole restaurant to ourselves except for a group of men at the bar having a good time in Italian. That just added to the authenticity of the place.

Great wine list - and they make excellent recommendations without pushing you up the price list (especially helpful for exploring the many European wine options). Short menu, but they usually add a few specials - and everything always sounds so good I have never had trouble finding more things to order than I could possibly eat in one sitting.
