I recommend skipping the Boarding House - there are way too many better alternatives. By the way, we ate a LoLa Burger (Friday Lunch) Corazon del Mar (Friday dinner), Straight Warf (Saturday dinner) and my teenagers ate a Proprietors (Sunday diner), all of which were excellent!

  • Homey southern in Nantucket
    Jean
    Dined on 6/9/2013
While the ambiance of the outdoor dining porch was romantic and charming, the food was disappointing. My mixed fruit mimosa tasted like spoiled fruit. All the entries had a southern twist: shrimp and grits, fried chicken and waffles. The actual food was a disappointing imitation of the real thing. The shrimp and grits tastes like cream of wheat cereal with three shrimp thrown on top and I could barely choke it down. The chicken and waffles were small and dry with a couple pieces of chicken on top.

My husband and I visited the Boarding House on Saturday night of Memorial Day weekend- Figawi weekend. It was very noisy and there were several large groups in the dining room. The bar was packed with mostly young people. Not quite the atmosphere we were looking for but if that's your scene, it would be fun. The food was good and the service great so we would try it again on a different weekend.

My husband and I have been fans of the Boarding House since it opened because of the consistently good and interesting food, lovely ambience, and great service. We particularly enjoy eating at the bar because we enjoy the casual and fun ambience. However, this season, beginning in May, we have been disappointed with the food. The menu seems a little tired; food combinations are not as interesting. The chicken entree has always been a favorite, but the current version is uninspired. The biscuit and the greens are well executed, but the coating on the chicken and the sauce are uninteresting. A recent bay scallop special was unattractively presented. The scallops were delicious but other elements of the dish did not complement the scallops.

I was seated and waiting for my date to park and not offered a drink. Not even water. Limited menu. Wanted an entree from the restaurant week menu (one usually in the regular menu, just not that night) and was told no I couldn't have it. The underground room was very noisy and dark and there were two crying babies. Nantucket has so many great restaurants. I won't be going to this one again.

Disappointing; it was not consistent; the halibut was dry, the scallops were good, the roast chicken good and the signature lobster dish tough and for desert the signature salted caramel donuts well it depends, I got one that the salt was in your first bite because it was not dispersed evenly in the caramel - ruined my taste buds and had to send back. The ambivalence was nice. This place is hopping and hard to get in to - I expected more. There are too many places to visit - I would not recommend or return.

Part of our family went one night and another the next - both groups gave very favorable ratings, except for one disappointment that took the food mark down a notch - doughnut dessert with salted caramel should have been presented warm and it was cold (caramel hard). Its a great place to eat outside, but also down in the basement is pretty special with arched ceilings. Food was great with the exception of the chorizo scallops being overwhelmed by smokey chorizo flavor. Tuna tartare, beef carpaccio, pâté, sea bass excellent and we had an amazing lavender honey home made ricotta. One of the best meals in a while

    OpenTable Diner Since 2009
    Dined on 7/8/2012
The service was very slow and the food overpriced. Only 6 entrees for selection and waiter informed us they were out of one leaving 5 rather boring entrees to choose from. A mid ranged tequila on rocks was $20 and three chocolate chip cookies with a small cup of frappe 12 dollars. We were planning to visit a sister restaurant the following day but cancelled to avoid another overpriced bland meal, we waited 20 minutes for our reservation all the time we could see our table was open and needed to be cleared.

Always love going here, unfortunately things were a little below par the night we went. It took forever to get our food and with 2 kids there, it didn't go well. I ordered the striped bass (nantucket's best) and got a different fish. The waiter said he thought he verbalized that to me. Um, no. It was just disappointing. The wait was just the worst. 2-1/2 hours to eat and took desert to go.

Went here for a cozy Sunday brunch, and were pleasantly delighted with the quality of food and service. The staff was very friendly and prompt. The French Toast Bread Pudding was incredible, and suprisingly filling. My husband enjoyed the chicken and waffles, though he didn't particularly care for the sauce it came adorned with. We didn't have room to try the lemon custard donuts, but that will definitely be rectified next time we visit. This was my husband and my first time in Nantucket, and I know when we get the chance to come back, the Boarding House will be on our list for dining out!

Great ingredients ruined by oh-so-fussy manipulation. I felt as if someone had played with my food for many, many minutes. Wonderful grilled lobster marred by liberal coating of hot pepper flakes! Every dish just too twee for words. Way too influenced by now-closed Spanish restaurant with heavy use of dehydrated crystals, bunsen burners and other food shape-changing science experiments. Menu items way too costly as a result.

Recommended by a friend who visits and spends a lot of time on Nantucket; the food was excellent. Beautiful presentation and everything was amazing. My husband and I shared their small cheese plate, pork belly appetizer which was melt in your mouth amazing and 6 oysters. I got a spring pasta dish and he the scallops for dinner. Apple tart and brought to your table french pressed coffee for dessert. Great atmosphere and stellar service. All in all highly recommended for a great meal and enjoyable time.

We were very much looking forward to dinner at The Boarding House and called to confirm our reservation on the day of the booking. It was only then that we were told The Boarding House would not be open for dinner that night! We were offered a table at The Pearl (their restaurant next door) which we took. Sadly, this was nowhere near as good as the reports we had heard and nowhere near as good as The Boarding House was when we last visited....but that's another story. It would have been helpful if The Boarding House had the decency to let us know they couldn't honour our reservation as there was a Wine Festival on in Nantucket at the time which meant our choice of alternative restaurant was extremely limited.

Very disappointing-- the sloppily dressed maitre d' , or perhaps the owner, greeted us chewing gum and then sat the two of us at a table for four without bothering to clear the other two services. Our waitress was pleasant, but somewhat inattentive. The food was mediocre at best, though a bit less expensive than at Dune and Oran Mor, where we also ate the same weekend. These people need to get their act together and bring their food and service up to the standard of the decor, which is quite inviting. Until then, there's no reason to spend money here.
