A word from Nice Matin
"Nice Matin, named after the largest daily newspaper in the South of France, gives the Upper West Side a splash of Provençal sunshine and a heady introduction to the cuisine of Nice, home of the pissaladière, pan bagnat and, if we are to believe the menu, a whopping big burger topped with comté cheese, smeared with aioli and served with a heap of rosemary-flecked fries. It's the best thing to happen to a hamburger since Daniel Boulud worked foie gras and short ribs into an all-beef patty. The pleasure is all on the plate, and it carries right through to the desserts.", William Grimes - NY Times.

Since it's restaurant week, I chose off the prix fix which was a bit of a disappointment. I think they could have done a better job of making the food as special as what my guests ordered off the regular menu. Wasn't at all horrible...just not that special. I chose the shrimp salad & melon gazpacho. Also, we had lots of server's, but inconsistent service. Very hot day & refills on the liquids i.e. water & ice tea were not forthcoming. Also, no one person checked in to ask how the food was etc. Nice Matin is a neighborhood gem & I will return, but just wanted to offer my two cents.

Usually, despite reservations, Nice Matin keeps you waiting for at least 30-45 minutes past reservation time. Because we visited during the quiet July 4 weekend, we were spared this wait, and were seated immediatly. The long waits, despite reservations, make us choose Nice Matin infrequently, even though we love the food.

Had some creative menu items like the "asparagus beignets" - delicious! The short ribs were fantastic. But the topper was the pastry shell on the tarts - it was the perfect amount of flaky and crunchy - hats off to whomever their pastry chef is.

I almost always enjoy Nice Matin and love its close proximity to my home. Friends whom I have taken there have adopted it - even though it is a trip for them and they now visit it on their own. Ninety-five percent of the time the food is wonderful - and I am fussy. Occasionally it slips, but that is rare. The wait staff and greeters are fabulous. They are warm, friendly, helpful, informed, and always highly professional. Only one complaint - the noise level can be over the top at times. I think it relates to fact that there are so many hard surfaces which lack sound absorption when the restaurant is crowded and the music is loud. The wait staff has sometimes been kind enough to lower the music. It helped. I love the place other

Nice-Matin is one of our favorite restaurants in NYC. I have never had a bad meal there. It is quite frequently busy, but it is never obnoxiously noisy. If, for any reason, you have missed your reservation, do not fret - you can comfortably at the bar. The service is great - please feel free to ask a server for a recommendation - they do know what is good, and they are not shy about their recommendations. The wine list is very good, but it isn't an encyclopedia - which is very good (when I see a wine list that is compiled like a thick tome, I have an urge to run away from the establishment).

As long time patrons of Nice Matin we looked forward to celebrating our anniversary there. We were moderately disappointed. Our food was not cooked as ordered, it was hard to get the attention of a server, and the fact that it was our anniversary was never acknowledged even though we mentioned it several times including at the time of the reservation.

i have eaten here many many times...it is good but more more because it doesn't have much competition. It can't deal with crowds which is bizarre considering it is almost crowded ... and unfortunately while wait staff is friendly and wine stewards good. the food is spotty and it is difficult to to get drinks, food or other attention ie, kitchen and bar don't deliver

Service was very slow, but polite. Others who came after us were served before we did. Finally, I had to tell the waiter that we had a performance to attend and that we needed to order. It took forever for me to get a glass of wine. I was on my third glass of water before I received a glass of wine. I feel that the food was a bit overpriced for the type of service that was delivered, but overall the food was delicious.

We had a very good grilled vegetable panini of eggplant, cheese & olive tapenade with a small salad and Moules (mussels) Provencal served with small bowl of fries. Both were excellent. Service was a bit slow at first, getting my first cup of coffee, but thereafter was fine. The variety of breads served with the lunch were great - chewy sour dough, nutty whole wheat and some other kind as well. Finished off with wonderful bowls of creamy cafe au lait. The dark chocolate of Pot au Creme served with whipped mascarpone chantilly was great - especially if one is a chocoholic! Great place if one is in the neighborhood of the American Natural History Museum or Upper West Side.

My husband's scallops were perfectly done. My friend's hamburger quite good, but her crispy-looking French fries arrived limp & luke warm. My hanger steak was done perfectly, and the generous portion of spinach accompanying it was delicious. Our two complaints were that although there were several tables vacant when we arrived at 6:30, we were seated on this windy evening in a very drafty corner by the back door. As our waiter handed us the menus, she simultaneously asked whether we needed a "little more time"; we felt hurried throughout the meal. Both the wait staff and bus staff circled and hovered every two minutes. This swarming about our table made for a most uncomfortable dining experience, and it's unlikely we'd return.

A great neighborhood find that has been around for a while - and despite being "known" remains wonderful. The food is creative and fresh, the wine list amazing with well priced choices, and the table spaced widely enough to make conversation easy even with the exuberance of the crowd. Service is attentive but not overly so. All in all - a favorite.
