A word from Lion and Compass
For over a quarter of a century, the Lion & Compass has maintained a special status in the Silicon Valley. Opening in 1982, the Lion & Compass quickly established its reputation as the premiere business dining restaurant for the high-tec cognescenti. Combining sophisticated urban cuisine with a tropical English environment, a New York Times article from the 1980's noted, "the Lion & Compass is to the Silicon Valley what Sardi's was to the theater district."

From business dining and banquets, private corporate events, wedding receptions, to a fine dining experience for two, the Lion & Compass is a culinary oasis in the Silicon Valley.

Lion & Compass is a very pretty place hidden in the neighborhood of Sunnyvale. I took my friend visiting from Seattle and the first impression of the restaurant is certainly wonderful when we seated. The wait staff was friendly but a bit slow. It took a while for both of our entree to arrive, and I had to bring the check back to the service counter to finish payment. I also had to ask for my dinning card back since the service counter forgot to return to me. My friend and I were quite impressed with the portion of the food and the taste was enjoyable.

Overall it was a very good experience. The key lime cheesecake needs work. It was a little bland...needs more zing if it is going to use the term "key lime".

I know this restaurant has been around for over 20 years. There is a reason - the food is great. The menu has something for everyone. My guests, who are from Boston, really enjoyed their meal.

Our server was overwhelmed - she couldn't have been in over her head any more than she was! We never got bread, took at least 10 minutes to bring two bottles of mango iced tea and when we told her we were on a tight lunch schedule she looked at us with this deer in the headlights gaze... I like Lion & Compass - but come on - either train her or replace her!

i'm biased as I have eaten at L&C a lot. I mean a lot. Lunches almost exclusively. I recommend it. you can sit in the really nice garden room but it gets loud in there. the other room is low key, quiet. there are about 4 outdoor tables and i've enjoyed myself there. mostly i eat in the noisy garden room because it really is rockin. food is very good. always yummy. staff is professional.

The food service or chef was too slow, perhaps there was a large party in the private area? It took 45-minutes to get our meal. Other than that, it was good. The lighting is a little too dim at the tables also.

    OpenTable Diner Since 2005
    Dined on 4/7/2008
It was just okay. PF Changs doesn't have as good food, but their ambiance is better...more lively. The extreme quietness of the restaurant became a little uncomfortable for our party of 8. Also, we were the first there for dining and the service didn't seem "awake" yet. With no one else in the restaurant, it would seem they should be all over their first set of customers, but it wasn't that way.

    OpenTable Diner Since 2004
    Dined on 3/31/2008
Ice cold draft beer with good selection, ok wine list, excellent food. The special was fantastic, a Thai coconut broth with salmon, sea bass, scalopps, shrimp. Red pepper ravioli was unique and flavorful. They have game and other excellent meat selections as well. The room is open and sunny, ambience ok, service efficient, friendly and non-interfering. I would recommend it for anyone interested in great food in a charming place, but not a hip scene to people watch. Might be ok for kids, but a little quiet, though there is outdoor seating.

I like bringing clients to your restaurant. The food and service are great. It's a large, bright open room that is not too noisy. It makes for good business discussions that aren't easily overheard by surrounding tables. Keep up the great work!

    CarinaVIP
    Dined on 3/17/2008
I remember the Lion and Compass in its heyday in the 80's--it was "the" place to go. For that time, its menu was adventurous, it was pricey, and you could get a telephone brought to your table. These days, the menu is nice, the prices are OK, but it seems a lot more pedestrian than it used to be. Also, I have to confess to liking being seated better in the rooms closer to the bar than to the large, open room with wicker chairs, which are always a little tipsy on the tile floor. It's OK for lunch in an area with few alternatives, but these days, it would never be a dinner destination for me.

Overall a pleasant experience, although a wine list glitch proved somewhat annoying. The restaurant did not have 2 wines (maybe more?) on their list that we ordered, but they substituted a higher priced one at the lower cost, so no harm. The chairs were not especially comfortable, and the menu seemed somewhat limited. I did try the pork (which I never order when I go out) which was wonderful, however. We'll go back.
