My girlfriend and I are big Top Chef fans and were lucky enough to be in the Denver area recently. We had to visit. We went with my mom and sister and brother-in-law and had a great meal. The place was quite busy, especially for a Tuesday night. I'm guessing it was from the Exec Chef's recent Top Chef win, but I can see why it would be busy all the time. Because there were 5 of us we were able to sample a lot of the menu. None of us had a bad meal. Their signature drinks and libations added a great dimension to the very dynamic menu offerings. Living in California, fresh fish is easy to get. Fresh fish in land-locked Boulder was a real treat.

  • Jax is a lot smaller and more
    OpenTable Diner Since 2007

Jax is a lot smaller and more crowded then I expected (and we went on a Wednesday night). While waiting for our table (we did have reservations but waited 5 to 10 minutes), we were very crowded in the front, standing right next to people seated in the front, window tables. Once we got seated, we didn't see our waiter for more than 5 minutes. There was water and bread at our table. We had to ask the waiter what the specials were. After we place our order, we got our drinks right away. Our water glasses were never empty and dirty plates were picked up quickly. Things move fast and service was great after we ordered. We were offered extra bread to go with our mussels sauce. The food came fast and was excellent. Leftovers for next day!

    OpenTable Diner Since 2009
    Dined on 3/13/2009
JAX Happy Hour is not to be beat. Though we did not sample from the dinner menu, some Happy Hour specials and apps were plenty, the food at other tables looked delicious. It is on the pricey side but fresh seafood in a landlocked state should be. My only complaint was the size of the dining area. We were a table of three tucked into a small corner booth. Any time one of use wanted to get up from the table either our table or diners at other tables had to shuffle around. Overall it was a great experience with a lively atmosphere and superb food.

Oh My Gosh! The food was incredible and we tried 3 appetizers and 3 main dishes...then 2 desserts. Chef Hosea was gracious enough to have pictures taken with us. I had the CO bass and that dish was out of this world.. The sauce was to die for and it was just a perfect blend with the brussel sprouts and potatoes. But what would you expect from a Top Chef!

The service was wonderful, from the hostess to the server to the bussers. We appreciated the chef coming by as well, it was a great experience to meet him personally. For a seafood restaurant that is located about as far away from a coast as possible, I thoroughly enjoyed the food. But because of the physical location I think there is a lot of room for improvement.

We had a party of 5 at Jax Fish House Happy Hour. It was a blast. I love the low lighting because it makes everyone look wonderful. The Happy Hour menu was filled with delicious treats that were reasonably priced. I'm a Top Chef fan too. That is where I first heard about JAX. I live in LA and was in Boulder for the weekend

It was a very busy place that Friday night and still the service was Excellent. Though my wife and I enjoy a quiet, romantic dinner, this place was not quiet by any means. But that was good. While there I felt energetic, avery upbeat. Everyone was friendly and courteous. For the Appetizer, we had the Fried Calamari (one of the few places I have found that serves not only the rings but the sliced steak of the squid as well) followed by the Special Corvina and Seared sea scallops for my wife. We had the Crème Brulee Trio for desert. The food was excellent, well worth the trip. We left there wanting to go back, feeling cunfortably full and very happy. I would recommend Jax Fish House – Boulder to anyone that enjoys a good fish dinner.

After Hosea (Jax's executive chef) won Top Chef, we just had to go to try it out. Reservations were a bit hard to come by - only accept them from 4-6 PM, then its first come, first serve after 6 PM. Two people at the table had the fried catfish, on a bed of jumbalaya, rice and corn bread. It was VERY good - but quite dry given all the bread. Definitely ask for a side of tartar sauce. This was also one of the most budget-friendly, and largest dishes. The bass was swapped out with Mahi Mahi, which was very good - same with the tuna. The restaurant was quite vibrant, and there were a lot of people there for a Sunday night. The tables are not right up against each other, which I appreciated. Definitely recommend it for Boulder area din

Service was very good; little slow towards the end as it got busier but still top notch. Desert was incredible--highly recommend the creme brulee trio--just the right amount. Enjoy!

Came to celebrate moving to Boulder from Los Angeles! Arrived at 6pm and it was packed. Had the Caesar (anchovy was vinegar-y and great!) and the stripped bass, which I highly recommend. The pomegranate and brown butter sauce was perfectly rich and balanced. My boyfriend is a vegetarian and they gladly put together a number of vegetable sides and the butternut squash soup (also amazing!) without crab. All in all, great food. Eclectic atmosphere -- chalk writing on exposed brick walls and colorful fish artwork abounds. BUT loud, busy, and a little cramped. Service made up for it -- very polite, timely, and knowledgeable.

Fresh and well prepared seafood, but overpriced for what you get. I'd go here again on someone else's tab, but probably not if I had to pay for it. I had their curried sea scallops entree. They were seared perfectly and seasoned lightly enough that the flavor of the scallops was the main attraction. It came with some fried polenta which was nice and crisp but a bit bland (poor quality cornmeal?). Also came with sauteed oyster mushrooms that were perfect. Fiancee had their "old school tuna" special. Barely seared on the outside and rare on the inside. Would have been better with a darker crust on the outside, but still good. Total tab with two entrees, one shared appetizer and dessert, and no drinks was $83 incuding tax and ti

Our server was friendly, outgoing and helpful and we loved being there during happy hour to have reasonably priced appetizers and drinks from 4-6pm at our table. I'd characterize the food as "eclectic seafood." Very creative, outstanding flavor combination. Oysters were featured, and there were 6 or 7 different varieties to choose from. We tried 4 and they were all very fresh and flavorful. The service we received was impeccable, with perfect attention to detail, yet we were not doted on or interrupted unnecessarily. The restaurant is always crowded and noisy, but that is just part of the deal at Jax. The food and the service make the experience well worth the effort.

    OpenTable Diner Since 2008
    Dined on 11/20/2008
This is a good restaurant for foodies, but it is not for special occasions. The ambiance is very casual: patrons can (and do) color on the walls in crayon. I felt from the time I was seated that the waiter was trying to rush me. He seemed to not want me to order hors d'oeuvres or dessert, just a main course. The food is generally very good, but there were a couple problems. The fries were soggy and three times while eating my scallops I bit down on a piece of grit. I would go back to the Denver location, but not to this one.
