Think upscale atmosphere that Mortons or similar place tries to achieve but is actually executed here. Much more airy feel to it than most upscale restaurant locations. Clam chowder is the best I've ever had and, given I'm from Alaska, the halibut was most definitely not too shabby!

The food was very disappointing. Fried items were heavy and tasteless, and for the most part the vegetables were uninteresting. Although one dessert was delicious, another was dull. The quality of the service was mixed. On the one hand the servers who waited on us were very friendly and engaging, and one of them went out of his way to obtain a particular dish for us that was in short supply. On the other, that same server left us unattended for quite a while when one of us needed sugar for tea. The overall experience was nowhere near worth the cost.

While the seafood was fantastic, the tables (there were two of us) were very crowded and close together so that you were almost sitting with the couple next to you (very little privacy)! My husband and I were celebrating a special night and I had requested a quiet corner table - instead, we were right smack in the middle of the large dining room. Also, the desserts were not as wonderful as we expected ... all in all, the place had a more "commercial" feel to it than anything else ...

I have dined at a number of Oceanaire's and this was by far the worst experience. The drinks came out wrong and one of the entrees was cold. When you are spending that kind of money ($35++), the food should be at least warm. Will not return to this Oceanaire.

I've visisted Oceanaire before, and have been extremely pleased. On this recent visit, I was a bit disappointed with the meal (fried seafood plate). My guest had the crab sandwich and was quite please, which I am happy to say because I was treating him there for the first time on his birthday. I will return to Oceanaire again, as I've mentioned that other visits were quite pleasing to the palate. Thank you for the opportunity to share. Phyllis Newon

  • Typically, dining at Oceanaire
    OpenTable Diner Since 2005
    Dined on 4/14/2008
Typically, dining at Oceanaire is without fault. This time, however, I was disappointed by the service, or at least, our server. He seemed exasperated by any questions about dishes on the menu and would respond with answers like "it's good" or "others seem to like it," nothing more. After we placed our orders, he more or less forgot about us. He seemed more focused on his tables with large parties as these would definitely more "big-ticket" in comparison to a table of 3. Although he dropped off the dessert menu, he never came back to take our orders. The host had to. Part of the reason I enjoy Oceanaire so much is the service, and this just left a slightly bad taste in my mouth.

My scallops came out cold. They were then reheated and as such, were overcooked when I finally got to eat them. The server seemed to be disinterested and busy, (almost understandable as the restaurant was packed on a Saturday night) However, given the lack of interest I don’t know if I will be able to take people to a celebration dinner again OceanAire. (This is a little sad, as Smith and Wollensky / Capital Grill were getting boring) Best, Jay E. Gazlay 202.262.7284

Our reservation was for 8:30 and we weren't seated till 9:15. Every time we would ask the Host he would just tell to wait in the bar. We would have been forgotten if it wasn't for the nice waitress in the bar who went and made him seat us. When ordering, you were out of our 1st 3 appetizer choices. The salad was amazing. But i had the arctic char and it was only so-so. Our waiter was very nice, but having to wait 45 minutes when you have a reservation is very unacceptable. I have been to Oceanaire in Dallas and really liked it, so i was extremely disappointed after this experience.

    OpenTable Diner Since 2007

We were less impressed with Oceanaire on this visit. When we checked in, we were told they'd need five, maybe ten minutes to prepare our table. Fine, we said, we'll be in the bar. Twenty minutes later, we went back and the visibly surprised host said, "Oh! Let me check on your table. Oh yes, it's ready." Clearly, we had been forgotten. We noticed the prices on the menu had skyrocketed, and while the service was attentive, we were guided by our server to the three most expensive entrees, one of which was $119. The food was good, but overall Oceanaire felt more like a chain restaurant than it did an independent restaurant. It probably wouldn't be our first choice next time.

I truly believe that if I had not known the Maitre d' (he was doing a great job considering the circumtances) the wait would have been much longer. My group and I thoroughly enjoyed our lunch at Oceanaire. Oceanaire is known for its crab cakes, and UNFORTUNATELY on this visit they could not be rated as the best crab cakes in the Washington-Metro Area. The crab cakes had way too much filling, instead of it having the abundance of crab meat that everyone loves. Get back to your traditional crab cake recipe, and you will find me as a regular at Oceanaire! The service was great, and our waiter, Adrian, went above the call of duty to please us. All of Adrian's suggestions were right on point. A big THANK YOU to Adrian for making my Mom's birthday a memorable one!!

Been to the other oceanair's and expected another terrific meal and time. What a disappointment. I had to brush off crumbs and clean the table myself. Even when they saw me doing this they let ME continue. The waiter told us AFTER dinner the specific vodka requested was substituted because they did not have what we ordered. He wanted to know if we noticed the difference. Of course we did but how wrong and unprofessional is that! Had a 9pm rez and was told at 10:25 if we wanted anything else cause the kitchen was closing soon. Sorry to impose on their schedule. Had better time and service at places where they hand you food through a window and your still in your car.

    Dined on 3/29/2008
The shrimp cocktail was great, but the shrimp could have been cleaned better. Same for my wife's scallops. She is very particular; said there was sand on them, and they were a bit salty. The crab cake appetizer was outstanding. I asked for my salmon medium well (cooked through), but at best it was medium. I liked the seasoning. The scalloped potatoes were disappointing, except for the crusty top. They were prepared differently than I've had them before, and seemed a bit undercooked. There was about twice the amount needed for two people, ok for party of four. The asparagus was good. The fruit sorbet desert was very good. In general, the restaurant is over-priced for the quality of food we experienced.

One of my favorite spots in D.C. I grew up on the coast and am very picky about my seafood--not a fan of Kinkead's for example. Oceanaire is simple, fresh and delicious. Oysters are excellent, with a lot of variety. Fish dishes are prepare simply, with emphasis on quality ingredients. My only complaint is that the restaurant is loud, especially on weekends. If you want a quiet, cozy, meal, this is probably not the place. But, if you want good, quality seafood that is not fussed over, Oceanaire is great.
