Great decor, but very pricey, (eg) $14 for a margarita. Too many small things served on tortillas, which overwhelmed the filling taste with a corn chip taste. Much prefer the food at Tinto to this restaurant. Not sure this restaurant will survive with its current prices in this part of Philly.

The food was excellent with a variety of meat, fish, and vegetable dishes that our group of four shared. The only negative was the extremely high noise level. We requested a booth which was slightly less noisy, but even so, this is definitely not a romantic spot or a place to relax. Sound absorbing materials are desperately needed. P.S. The rating scale for noise listed above is not helpful. "I don't recall" and "energetic" don't come close to describing my experience. How about changing it to "Call OSHA"!!

WOW. A perfect companion restaurant to Amada and Tinto. We opted for the tasting menu and were glad we did. Our dishes that night included guacamole, fish tacos, queso and duck, a flatbread dish, a chopped salad, pork belly and beef. The seasonings of each dish blended perfectly together and were not overpowering. Perfection! While I generally like small quiet restaurants, Distrito was so much fun and colorful and so festive that I could not help but have a smile on my face throughout the dinner.

    Dined on 8/2/2008
We have been to AMADA, TINTO and now Mr. Garcia's latest gem DISTRITO. He is truly a rising star in the food industry and Philadelphia is extremely fortunate to have him. He provides food worthy of big cities like Chicago & NY. We still prefer the ambience of AMADA & TINTO. DISTRITO is basiclaly like EL VEZ but on steroids. The food here is gourmet the food at EL VEZ is just good. The neighborhood leaves little to be desired and is a major drawback. However we will venture out to this gem a few times a year. Please keep in mind you have to be willing to dine eating tapas which are small servings of each dish. For two people you'll need 6 to 8 tapas. Put that with a pithcer of margarittas and your looing at spending $150.

the neighborhood is not the best at the moment. we headed in for a 5:00 late lunch/early dinner and good thing..we took the train in which is only a block away (40th and market) so that was easy, yet the restaurant is on the outskirts of univ city. not sure how it will be at night. yet the Food and the ambiance were great!! they give El Vez a run for its money. looks almost the same - shared bathroom area, staircase with memorabilia.. food was very good, not typical mexican, but rather gourmet mexican. dont go in there expecting chips salsa and run of the mill tacos. the huaraches were awesome!! the moles are great, authentic flavors.

Even though Distrito, featuring pink walls decorated with lucha libre masks, channels a Stephen Starr brand of kitch (which I dislike), it's tapas-style menu was quite good. The more unusual dishes such as esquites were surprising and delicious. The moles too were quite wonderful, although the more traditional Mexican fare--tacos, tamales, etc., while good, were unsatisfying especially when I can go down to Washington Avenue for similar (if slightly less delicate) stuff and spend only $10 as opposed to $60. The wait staff are all very young, well-intentioned, yet unexperienced and over-solicitous. Our waiter read the entire menu to us and then returned after each plate to question whether we liked it. He talked more than we did! Too much.

Minor disappointment was the table just beside the "ordering station"....lots of traffic to and fro...but service was excellent, we remembered our server from a visit to Tinto. Slow the bus person down a little..... abit over zealous about clearing empty plates. We'll be back.

    NYCRunnerVIP
    Dined on 7/27/2008
They tried to take the Amada concept and make it Mexican. However, Mexican food is even more straight forward than Spanish. Having spent years in Mexico the only straight forward item on the menu were the sodas and the guacamole. They need to put in some classic items without the duck / semi-sweet / remoulade. If they can fix the menu before they go out of business it will be a great place. In the mean time if they can get the hip bar scene going they may survive. By the way its on 39th not Chestnut.

The atmosphere is fun, whimsical and youthful. However, we were disappointed by our meal, although after speaking with others who also ate there in the opening week, perhaps our choices were the reason. Although delicious, the guacamole was overpriced. We did agreed that the pulled pork was delicious. We have thoroughly enjoyed our meals at Tinto and Amada and just didn't feel that Destrito lived up to our expectations. We will return for another chance.
