  • Probably the best Mexican
    HWJWVIP
    Dined on 8/23/2008
Probably the best Mexican food I've had outside Mexico. Menu was carefully, pssibly brillantly conceived, and the food managed to be original, academic and recognizable as Mexican at the same time. The servers were very nice, knowlegable and attentive, although there were times where we waited too long, e.g. for addtional tortillas. Restaurant was attractive, but not special. I imagine that the noise level was supposed to reflect the energy of the Districto Federal (Mexico City), it did that only too well. Even in Mexico City, it is possible to speak with your dinner companion without shouting.

Distrito is now the best food in the city, and our new favorite restaurant. We've eaten there three times, and everything we've had has been good. The hamachi tacos, the chocolate cake, and the churros are to die for. We've had the hamachi all three times, and all three times it was incredible. Amazing consistency of cuisine. The decor is a quirky but amusing mix of mexican wreslters, diner displays, and wicker booths. Drinks are tasty, but a bit expensive. Food is cheap for high end cuisine.

I was underwhelmed. There wasn't anything adventurous about the menu. The food was okay Mexican food, but nothing spectacular. The menu was overpriced. The decor was hideous and I wasn't really sure what they were going for. The wicker furniture was uncomfortable. Definitely the worst of his three restaurants in Philadelphia. I love Tinto and Amada but will not be going back to Distrito.

Great ambiance. Nice place to go for a special occasion: B'day, going on a date etc. I wont go here on a daily basis just because it is too pricey and the food quantity isn't much. Have had better mexican food at other places. They decorate your food alot and thus the quantity goes away. Service was great and I absolutely loved the dessert. Our table was the green car inside the restaurant..it was kind of cool.

DISTRITO hits every sense on the dot! Sight, sound, smell, touch, taste! Its a sensory overload! The tapas are crafted to perfection. They not only look and taste great, but as soon as they hit the table, they give off this wonderful scent and every dish brings something new. The drinks are amazing. My only problem, the margarita prices. $45 for a fresh fruit pitcher is a little steep, although the drink was very good we only got about 3 glasses TOTAL out of it. DISTRITO also provides great service. From the kind hostess, to the helpful server, and the quick buser, there are constant people around to give you the ultimate dining experience.

  • The food is a contemporary
    OpenTable Diner Since 2002VIP
    Dined on 8/16/2008
The food is a contemporary twist on Mexican cuisine, generally favoring tapas-sized plates. Two to three plates per person would be sufficient. My wife and I tried the tasting menu, and all was tasty and elegantly presented. The service was attentive. The decor could be described as an illicit liason between Tijuana and Miami. It is loud between the crowd and the music. The only draw back was that the mixed drinks were somewhat pricey, although they were suitably strong. For the student budget -- this place is near UPenn -- I'd suggest sticking to the cervezas. When school is in session, I imagine that this place will be hopping. My folks would hate this place -- and that's a compliment.

Being a huge fan of Amada and Tinto, I was looking forward to his take on Mexican. I think the food was great. Our server was fun, helpful, and knew the menu in detail. Their patience, cheerfulness, and recommendations made our evening. Our food was as vibrant as the atmosphere. With just enough essence of Mexico, and the epiphany inducing combination of discovered and classic flavor that Garces' chefs are renowned for. Coupled with the mariachi's song in the background, and the kooky decor, we were happily lost. The combination of professional service, a refreshing environment, and unmatched cuisine made going out a welcomed adventure again.

the place somehow manages to be over the top tacky (they have an entire wall covered in luchador masks) and still kind of charming. it's supposed to be very 'mexico city'. i haven't been, but i would say they did a very good job. the food is supposed to be 'upscale street food', and i am no judge for authenticity but i can tell you it was delicious. there was a soup with avocado and chicken in a chile broth, which was assembled tableside- sooooo good. the jicama salad was also delicious- very refreshing. i was sorry i got it to share, next time i will get one all to myself for sure. plates are small, keep that in mind. prices were reasonable.

Great decor, but very pricey, (eg) $14 for a margarita. Too many small things served on tortillas, which overwhelmed the filling taste with a corn chip taste. Much prefer the food at Tinto to this restaurant. Not sure this restaurant will survive with its current prices in this part of Philly.

The food was excellent with a variety of meat, fish, and vegetable dishes that our group of four shared. The only negative was the extremely high noise level. We requested a booth which was slightly less noisy, but even so, this is definitely not a romantic spot or a place to relax. Sound absorbing materials are desperately needed. P.S. The rating scale for noise listed above is not helpful. "I don't recall" and "energetic" don't come close to describing my experience. How about changing it to "Call OSHA"!!

WOW. A perfect companion restaurant to Amada and Tinto. We opted for the tasting menu and were glad we did. Our dishes that night included guacamole, fish tacos, queso and duck, a flatbread dish, a chopped salad, pork belly and beef. The seasonings of each dish blended perfectly together and were not overpowering. Perfection! While I generally like small quiet restaurants, Distrito was so much fun and colorful and so festive that I could not help but have a smile on my face throughout the dinner.

We have been to AMADA, TINTO and now Mr. Garcia's latest gem DISTRITO. He is truly a rising star in the food industry and Philadelphia is extremely fortunate to have him. He provides food worthy of big cities like Chicago & NY. We still prefer the ambience of AMADA & TINTO. DISTRITO is basiclaly like EL VEZ but on steroids. The food here is gourmet the food at EL VEZ is just good. The neighborhood leaves little to be desired and is a major drawback. However we will venture out to this gem a few times a year. Please keep in mind you have to be willing to dine eating tapas which are small servings of each dish. For two people you'll need 6 to 8 tapas. Put that with a pithcer of margarittas and your looing at spending $150.

Even though Distrito, featuring pink walls decorated with lucha libre masks, channels a Stephen Starr brand of kitch (which I dislike), it's tapas-style menu was quite good. The more unusual dishes such as esquites were surprising and delicious. The moles too were quite wonderful, although the more traditional Mexican fare--tacos, tamales, etc., while good, were unsatisfying especially when I can go down to Washington Avenue for similar (if slightly less delicate) stuff and spend only $10 as opposed to $60. The wait staff are all very young, well-intentioned, yet unexperienced and over-solicitous. Our waiter read the entire menu to us and then returned after each plate to question whether we liked it. He talked more than we did! Too much.
