Felt the food was very mediocre. Nothing was notable. There were 4 of us and many items were ordered but nothing stood out. That's unfortunate especially for the prices. Ordered the filet, trout, pork chop, and ravioli. No one even made any comment of their food. The skillet cookie dessert tasted like it had been previously frozen and wasn't served in a skillet- kind of silly. The after dinner drinks looked fabulous and fun but when asking our waitress about them she didn't know what they tasted like and said she'd find out once she made them. Not an answer I expected from a restaurant of this type. Just a disappointment when expecting a higher quality meal. The Swift Water Cellars was more of what we were expecting.

It's unfortunate for a restaurant that as a nice view and great atmosphere that the service is slow and the food is average. We waited more than an hour to get our food. Once it arrived is was underwhelming. We keep going back in hopes it has improved. The "large" salad with salmon was very small. My fish came seared with charcoal black skin. We sat at the table for a half hour before we even received bread. I wish I could give it better reviews but i had to be honest.

Beautiful decor - great mountain views. Unexpectedly sophisticated feel to the dining area. The wait staff was attentive and helpful. To be fair, we were there mid-week and the restaurant wasn't crowded at all, so perhaps al that attention should have bee expected, but it was genuine. The grilled asparagus appetizer was extraordinary, and both the trout and salmon entrees were properly cooked and quite tasty. The second night we enjoyed the grilled pork chop and a NY strip - excellent quality and well-prepared. One final note- if you are a dessert person the berry crisp with walnuts and a dab of ice cream is a killer! One irritant - we enjoy California Chardonnay and found the prices for these wines ridiculously inflated.

In a recent trip to Suncadia, we dropped into Portals for lunch (since the resort does not have pool-side service). We were one of two tables at the restaurant. We ordered a cup of soup, salad and a sandwich. Over 45 minutes later our food had not arrived. The other table in the bar area, who arrived after us, had received their food. We then questioned our server about our food and he ran to the kitchen to check on the status. Our food arrived shortly after, the sandwich and the salad. The soup came after, which makes perfect sense.

The restaurant is inside a gated resort, so keep that in mind while trying to find it. The staff is friendly and efficient, though with the large dinner crowd, service was a little slow. The menu is varied and will satisfy most people looking for fish, steak, or lamb. Don't forget to ask if there are any specials. That's how we found out about the duck, which was very good.

Booked 8 PM on July 4. Weren't seated until 8:30. Hostess told us several times we'd be seated in just a minute, they were turning over tables, other guests weren't leaving soon as expected. $37 buffet incl hot dogs, burgers, BBQ chicken, fruit, salads, dessert--red white blue shortcake. Drink service slow. Servers didn't remove buffet plates when we went second time. Next morning tried breakfast buffet at 9. Buffet was regular breakfast selection. On the whole, good. Same slow plate removal service. When leaving, we heard hostess tell guests they had to wait to be seated while tables were turned over, despite many empty tables. We couldn't decided if it was an off day or a systemic problem at Portals. Better management needed.

The chef needs to think more about the spices he/she throws into the food. Just throwing in a bunch of olives and dried tomatos, and a lot of other spices does not make a good dish. I actually couldn't finish my meal. Service was VERY VERY VERY slow. mww

When you stay at Suncadia you have two, overpriced, dining options; Portals and The Hoist House. We've had decent luck with Portals before but this last visit was disappointing. First they had managed to lose all the wine lists, then after finally finding one we waited 20 minutes for a glass of wine. When we tried to order a bottle of wine the waitress didn't really know about wine and they apparently don't have a wine steward. And then, before having a chance to enjoy the glass the salad and main course arrived. The impression being is that they wanted us out of there as fast as possible. The food itself was edible but not exceptional and at the prices they charge it should be exceptional. You're better off going to The Brick in Rosyln.

We returned for our anniversary dinner again this year. The wait staff is fun and personable. Most upscale restaurants are too formal and uncomfortable. Portals gets the fact that interacting with the customer makes the experience more comfortable and relaxing. That and the view have made us come back several times.

A friend and I drove out from Seattle this week and shared lunch at Portals. The entire day, including the hour+ drive and a bit of exploration of the Cle Elum area, was a pleasure...and lunch in this beautiful restaurant was one of the highlights. Quiet, with soft jazz in the background, smartly furnished, and with amazing views, the restaurant offers an ambiance that's classy, relaxing and romantic. The salad and Tillamook burger we shared were very good...fresh, tasty, and beautifully presented. And though the food was not inexpensive (17+ for a burger with fries included), the over-all experience and attentive service made it a worthwhile treat. I will be back.

The setting is beautiful. The staff friendly and courteous, but a tad slow and just plain forgetful. The steak finally arrived late and way overdone. Our waiter had disappeared again. Finally got the new steak and he forgot the knife and the wine and second cocktail. For the finale, he presented us with spoons and promised a special treat. It was my birthday and my wife had planned a little something. At last out came a bowl of vanilla ice cream and another apology. "sorry they ran out of candles." It was good ice cream though. The restaurant was nearly empty.

Service was wonderful - we were given a choice of waiting a few more minutes for a quieter spot near the window - and we took it. It was our anniversary and they surprised us with complimentary glasses of champagne. Nice, warm, cozy atmosphere with terrific view. We both shared the seafood pot and the flat iron steak - delicious on both accounts. It was great to have both.

Year after year this place disappoints. The food is fine. The service is terrible. It is so slow and the servers were robotic. They should at least smile. My family and I had to wait 10 min for someone to stop by our table after being seated. The restaurant was only half full. I was there this weekend and they said they were out of waffles. They can't make them from scratch? It is lucky that it here isn't much else around. The view is spectacular. It's too bad that a resort this nice can't have a better quality restaurant experience.

I will return again and again. I have never experienced a meal or service less than the best.

The waiter that we ended up with appeared to be new at the job and needs more experience to enhance the overall experience. In addition, the wine list had a bottle on 2006 Cave B listed, but to our surprise Portals no longer has it available (it should be removed from the wine list). We ended up settling for a 2008 Cave B and it didn't end up getting corked until after we had finished our meal.
