A word from Vine Street Cafe
Chef/Owners Lisa & Terry Harwood opened Vine Street Cafe in 2003. Located on South Ferry Road, just 1.5 miles from the South Ferry. Chef Terry works with area farmers, fishermen & vineyards and features their natural bounty on his seasonal menus. We make everything in house and Lisa's desserts, ice creams and fruit crisps are no exception. Recently, we opened a small market behind the restaurant. This is where you pick up take-out orders while stocking your home pantry. Specialty catering is available along with ready fresh meals such as meatballs, chicken salad, bread, smoked ribs, BBQ Sauce and a selection of artisan pastas. Reservations are highly recommended year round.

Dinner was outstanding... appetizers through dessert. Few restaurants live up to the hype... this one does! A little expensive, but when it's time to splurge, this is the place to go.

Although we were first surprised by the roadside (rather than sea side) location, the interior is warm and inviting and casually elegant. The service and the food are both of the highest quality. We will definitely coming back.

Even with the new addition this little dyanamo is packed on weekday nights in summer. Watercress & endive salad with blue cheese and bits of pear perfectly dressed with vinaigrette follwed by pork osso bucco hard to beat. Desserts could use a litle attention. Same selections year after year get a little boring. Still, if you're on the North Fork and like a nice ferry ride this is a hard to beat experience.

This restaurant deserves massive attention beyond Shelter Island and even New York City. The atmosphere is vibrant, but comfortable. The food is flavorful and consistently delicious. And the service is perfectly attentive and yet unpretentious. Wake-up New York - this is how food, service, and place blend for a perfect dining experience.

Honestly, this was one of the best meals I've ever had. The seafood, the duck, the wine, the dessert. It was truly outstanding. But the service was really bad. It took forever to seat us. It took forever to get our wine. And when we got the check the waitress charged us for the wrong bottle of wine -- naturally it was a more expensive bottle. But, again, the food was outstanding and I would definitely try it again.

  • My second time at Vine Street

My second time at Vine Street Cafe. From the lovely greeting as we strolled in for our 9:00 reservation, to the time we received our bill, the service was charming, warm and attentive (without being pesky). Food was very good, perfectly prepared and presented. The environment is simple, clean, warm and inviting. Perfect spot for a romantic dinner for two or a festive night out for four or more.

Pretty spot with good food and menu but be ready to spend $$$$ for small portions (try $27 for what looked like 1/4 of a chicken w/a few strands of vegetable). That should make you happy you ordered an appetizer AND A DESSERT --- so you don't go home hungry!

Lovely with delicious food but seemed very overpriced-- I think prices have gone up a fair bit since last year, and are not commensurate with the dining experience, which was lovely but not a place I'd go back to so soon at those prices.

Vine Street hits the spot for a Saturday night out to catch up with friends or family. The menu offers a wide variety of bistro style dishes. The food is good and occassionally quite good, the noise level does not interfere with table conversation. And service, including honoring reservations on time, is highly professional.

We had a truly delicious meal. The lamb was probably the best I've ever had. I literally gnawed on the bones, and was glad to have had a corner table with my back to the restaurant so that others couldn't see my total breakdown of manners. Pricey, however.

This was our second choice on Shelter Island, but it turns out we could not have asked for a more wonderful dinner - freshest ingredients, innovative combinations, and great service. The best meal we had on our "North Fork" weekend. The ambiance was definitely what we were looking for - relaxed, yet lovely - what a place for a summer evening!

    OpenTable Diner Since 2008
    Dined on 7/8/2008
We had a 6:00 reservation which we called ahead and asked to come in at 6:30 as there was traffic and the ferry had a line. They agreed. We arrived on time and was interested in the price fix once we saw it on the menu. It is from 5:30 to 6:30 and when I asked the waitress about it after I ordered my cocktail, she told me it was too late. I think that was in poor taste and it soured me on the rest of the meal. I usually order dessert and wine with dinner, but we decided that we would just eat and go.

we've always enjoyed eating here..this last visit was really poor.. completely ignored by the hostess.(SHE NEVER SMILED OR SAID A WORD TO US)..and ignored by our waitress for the first 10 minutes. ( we had to request a wait person.) apps came before our wine. plates were cleared while one person hadn't even finished. and the watiress whisked away the wine bottle before it was done. when we told her she said "it's dark in here, i couldn't see"

    OpenTable Diner Since 2007

This is a wonderful little spot on an island with very few choices for a nice dinner out. We brought our 18-month-old and while the restaurant did the best they could to accommodate him, kid-friendliness is not their strong point. (They had no high chairs and the seats were wooden benches, which ended up working out OK for us.) But all was forgotten when we got our superb salads and main courses. My husband had a steak and I had the most delicious swordfish I think I've ever tasted. Our very sweet waitress immediately brought out crayons and a plain pasta with butter and cheese and some delicious green beans for our son. We LOVED this place and can't wait to go back for a romantic dinner for two. Continued success to Vine St. Cafe!
