  • This was simply the BEST.

This was simply the BEST. Our server was knowledgeable, attentive, and very kind. The food was out of this world. Even the bread was outstanding. The wine list was extensive, but did not have to be expensive. This was our 25th anniversary, and we were greeted with glasses of proseco on the house. A very special dessert also arrived, on the house. A wonderful, romantic, delicious evening.

The twig of rosemary tucked in the napkin set the tone for this outstanding Italian restaurant. The food was excellent, the wine recommendation was a good one and the service was unobstrusive and efficient. Via Matta stands out in a crowded Back Bay restaurant scene as an excellent choice. I'm already looking forward to a return visit.

Food was outstanding. The wine service was slow. It took until we were just about finished with our apps to get our bottle that we ordered when we sat down. The staff was apologetic and took it off our bill which was a satisfactory way to handle the situation. We always have a great time at Via Matta and look forward to returning.

  • Would give more of a 4.5 stars

Would give more of a 4.5 stars for food. Server was good and well informed. Was out with 3 friends for a special 40th birthday dinner. Was dissapointed by two things: 1. Reservation was for 8:45 which was confirmed at noontime. At 8:40 PM I called to confirm seating and was told we would be seated at 9 PM and to arrive then. We were ultimately seated at 9:30 pm 45 minutes after our confirmed reservation. 2. I had asked for something special at time of res. I also confirmed this at noontime on day of reservation and was asked for the celebrants name. We all ordered dessert and nothing was brought/acknowledged at this time. I had to prompt server at that point and she rushed back with a candle and nothing with name.

Our appetizers were fantastic and the wine steward who helped us with our wine selection was excellent - he made a wonderful recommendation which we all thoroughly enjoyed. Our main courses however were less than memorable - my husband's chicken millanaise was very disappointing and it was served with an arugula salad that was too salty to eat. My puttanesca with sword fish and tuna was also disappointing and I couldn't distiguish the sword fish at all and the tuna tasted canned.

The food was top-notch and the service, impeccable. We had a short window due to theatre reservations and they accommodated this without stress and with grace. I really liked my bolognese. Love that they serve pasta entrees in half portions, too. Would definitely go back.

The food quality and preparation at Via Matta were stellar. It was only eclipsed by the fantastic service. From bartender to waiter, the staff's attention and service was unprecedented. Even the GM took personal interest in helping with wine selection and insuring that our dining experience was memorable. I highly recommend Via Matta.

I regard Via Matta as one of the best restaurants in Boston. It consistently produces fantastic food with a remarkably good wine list as well. The setting is fun, elegant and versatile as it appeals to those wanting a fun dinner with friends, a romantic dinner for two or even a more relaxed dinner at the bar. Overall, one of the very best in Boston.

I used to take clients and collegues to Excelsior for business dinners. Via Matta has become the new favorite place. Love the flourless chocolate cake and the contorni options. Actually, I just got back from a trip to Rome where I developed a mild foodie addiction to chicory greens -- the brocoli rabe went quite a long way toward getting me my bitter vegetable fix. Suggestion: smaller appetizers. Plus, maybe an appetizer that gives me a way to have the sopressata plus some of the burrata at the same time. I'm always torn between the two choices.

This was my 2nd time here and it is just fabulous. The food is outstanding, the service is impeccable. I took my sister, and 2 best friends there and they raved as well. I wanted to take them somewhere where I knew we would have a great meal in a lovely atmosphere with great service and food. Nick the manager is also fantastic, so knowledgable of the menu and was so helpful when we asked him for suggestions on food and wine. Both times I have dined at Via Matta I have talked with him and he is always so delightful and gracious. I told him that Via Matta is MY FAVORITE place to dine in Boston and that is saying a lot because I am very picky when it comes to fine dining. Everytime I walk out of there I can't say enough, it's simply lovely

This was my second visit to Via Matta. Instead of a table, we opted for dinner at the bar as it was on the early side. The wait staff were courteous, friendly, low-key, available as needed. We were encouraged to take our time. The food and wine were wonderful. Try the bruschetta, insalata mista, the salmon with Meyer lemon. We felt spoiled. We were given a small complimentary dessert (homemade strawberry sorbet), which was a perfect end to our meal. I already look forward to a third visit.

A lot of restaurants throw around the term "authentic Italian". Having been to Italy several times and also living there for a year, this is only one of two restaurants I've been to in the Boston area where that phrase is pretty accurate. It's a little pricey but well worth it if you really want to experience authentic Italian cuisine, which involves simple preparations with the best ingredients available. If you want pasta drowning in sauce or a cut of meat covered with a list of ingredients as long as your arm, skip this place and go to the North End.
