We ate outside and the evening was perfect! The Escargot could use a little more garlic. We all really enjoyed our meal- foodies and with a Native Frenchman too! He was impressed by your wine list- a difficult task! Thank you!

  • The food is fine and the waiter
    ambianceloverVIP
    Dined on 4/23/2008
The food is fine and the waiter was very knowledgeable in describing the choices to a neighboring table that was very particular in that regard. (I knew what I wanted). The menue is a bit limited for main courses: if you don't want seafood (just a few choices) or the day's special this is basically a steakhouse and one centered around classic thin French type steaks (admittedly with a variety of sauces). The repreoduction of 1930's decor is very well done. For those who want outdoor dining there are two terraces (the restaurant is on a corner), one of which is on a rather quiet street (most traffic goes on parallel Wisconsin Avenue) the other on an open space. For moviegoers the restaurant is literally next door to the Bethesda Landmark.

This is the second time I have been there where the order was not right. The meal had to be redone and it took an excessively long time to get it. We had to check on it. The manager eventually came over and told us that our meals were on the house. They did make a gesture of good faith which will encourage me to go back. However, they can't seem to get the orders right the first time and the service is very slow with little attentiveness to the customer. It seems like they lose a lot of money by not getting it right the first time.

A very consistent and reliable restaurant where you can always expect very good food, well-prepared and quite reasonably priced. Great bistro ambience with attentive, but not overly intrusive service. Steaks are excellent, but note that most are French bistro-style cuts: very thin but large. Better to order medium rare as opposed to rare. The sauces are excellent. Fries are unique in style as well. Country pate appetizder is also highly recommended. For desert, go with profitroles: Superb fudge and ice cream filling.

Well executed French bistro fare. The service is usually very attentive. My only complaint is the close proximity of the banquette tables to each other. It seems we always get seated next to a quarrelsome couple. That being said I will definitely be back.

Everything was great, but when I sent my open table email I asked for outdoor seating. Then when I was still at home, I called to make sure that we would be able to get an outdoor seat. The hostess on the phone said that it would be no problem. When we arived, they told me that no one ever told me that, and that we had to be seated inside. Tje food was excellent, but I was upset about the confusion.

The menu is classic French bistro, but I can't remember when the regular menu changed (although there are daily specials). We visit 2-3 times a month for lunch and dinner, so it's possible we're just over-familiar with it. The skate is wonderful and you can't find that dish very often on restaurant menus so I love MAG for that alone.

Nice atmosphere there. I didn't sit at the bar but it looks like a cool place to have some after work drinks. Our waitress was very nice though maybe at times slightly unattentive but she seemed new so that is forgivable. This was our second visit to Mon Ami Gabi in the last three months or so and it has been enjoyable both times. The lamb shank stew served on Wednesday nights and definintely worth trying out.w

Great ambiance! Live music that blends in. Great blend of wood, tile, and glass. French atmosphere and excellent choice of wines. I enjoyed the meal as well. Only down side was the service. Had a young, inexperienced lad who did not poor the wine, constantly splashed the contents of dirty dishes on the table cloth, and had to be asked serveral times to pay attention to his quests. That said, I HIGHLY recommend this restaurant. Every once in a while we get a poor waiter/waitress don't we?

pretty much a disaster from the beginning. They seemed confused by our reservation, our waiter informed us he was responsible for half the room AND was training so he was busy. And he certainly was, we had to wait for 15 minutes to order a drink, our food arrived less than 5 minutes after it was ordered, it was delivered by someone other than our waiter, who we did not see again until we had to flag him down for a check. There must have been at least half a dozen wait staff standing around but our wiater was never around. We had a pleasant experience with this restaurant during restaurant week, however Wednesday night was a very disappointing experience and we will not be going back.

We are frequent diners at Mon Ami Gabi. However, on Friday night, the service was, from my perspective, pretty bad, enough so that I will ask to have a different waiter if we are given the same one next time. His job was complicated by the table at which they sat us, which put us out of sight, but he should have been all the more anxious to check out what was going on. I will return, but not because of the service that I had this past Friday.

Usually great food. However, for my Salad Nicoise, the seared Ahi was so vein-ey that it was really inedible. I should have sent it back, but since I was with a work client, didn't want to ruin the lunch for all (after the first attempt to flag down the waiter failed.) In the end, I had to pay for my inedible meal, plus tax and tip and punchase lunch from Cosi next door. Also since my client asked for her salad without dressing, somehow mine didn't have dressing either. So, I had a bowl of undressed greens... :(

    OpenTable Diner Since 2008

This is one of the best dining experiences I have had in quite awhile. I was with a group of 7. We were sat immediately. Greeted in a timely manner. Our server Adam was very knowledgeable not only about the food and wine menu, but also the history of the establishment (Which helped settle a bet between my friend and I). The wine list was broad. The steak was cooked to perfection and the overall evening seemed to go without a flaw. The only drawback was at the end of the night we did wait a bit for our check. Our server Adam was apologetic and explained why. No harm for we all know things can go unexpectedly, but it did nothing to ruin the great night we had. If it was for the food and wine alone, I would return solely based on service. Thx
