A word from Kokkari Estiatorio
Kokkari (pronounced “Ko-Kar-ee”) is a small fishing village located on the islands of Samos in the Aegean Sea, whose name is derived from the small onions that were once produced in the nearby fields. Its fertile soil and Mediterranean climate translated into an abundance of fresh produce as well as treasured seafood and game. Legend tells that Kokkari is the site where Orion, a mighty hunter and a young man of gigantic stature and great beauty, fell in love with the daughter of the king of Chios. For the love of her, Orion forged the island for wild game and seafood to prepare elaborate banquets in celebration of their love. Today, we hope you will enjoy your own celebration as you dine at Kokkari Estiatorio on food “fit for the Gods” prepared with an Aegean palate and the style of innovative California fare.

The food was very good, though a little overpriced. Everything was very nice and special, except that the service had some problems. Our waiter was very friendly, but not as attentive to us as he should have been. He was not around, and so we waited too long, when we were ready to order wine, order appetizers, order dessert. There were plenty of other servers on the floor that could have helped or let him know that we were ready to order, but they seemed to ignore us. Serving food, pouring wine, cleanup, and other parts of service were very good.

Appetizers were the highlight. Main courses weren't as succulent as described. We had the pork rotisserie and the meat was tough and grainy. The lamb shank was not dissimilar to what one would find in a specialty restaurant half the price. Overall expected more of the food, but it was not bad either. Ambiance was great.

The food was excellent, and unique. I've never had anything quite like it anywhere else. It seemed like the servers were struggling to keep up with all the people packing the restaurant, resulting in service that was friendly but less than optimal. Our water and coffee requests were consistently not met correctly, and the beverages server would zoom away before we had a chance to ask for a correction. The waitress was attentive when she came to our table, but didn't come as often as we'd have liked. The atmosphere was very pleasant visually. The seats were comfortable. The noise level was high in the front room, where the bar was. We remember it being quieter in the back room, the last time we were there.

The service was non-existent - Waiter left us for long stretches of time, took forever to take drink and food orders, and only when we were about to order the specials (duck, I think?) he informed us that they were already 86'ed. He didn't even take our dessert order and instead sent someone else over to do it for him. It was embarrassing since I took my out of town friend there after praising the restaurant and food.

Kokkari always has solid food, however this time I found the service to be very frustrating. We had booked an early reservation, and the whole time we were rushed through our dinner. Multiple servers were very pushy with the speed of our meal, and we noticed several managers overseeing and checking their watches... For perspective, at no point were we slow/leisurely in our eating (literally we felt like we were being pushed to sprint through our meal), but were being rushed to order, eat, brought the check before we asked, etc - the entire time. Very unfortunate to see service go downhill like this, and it ended up being the exact opposite of a relaxing meal. As I said, frustrating and quite aggravating.

We have been to Kokkari (as well as its sister restaurant Evvia) many times since its opening, and we have never been disappointed. Our choice of dishes is very much limited since we are lactose intolerant and Greek food is based on lactose-rich ingredients such as yoghurt and feta. But we always enjoy the few items we can safely order, above all the octopus salad and the roasted whole fish.

This was the second time I've been to Kokkari. It was also the second time I was completely blown away. The food is traditional and rustic yet complex and full of unexpected flavors. The staff is very knowledgeable about their wine list as well. One of the best places in San Francisco. I highly recommend ordering many of the appetizers which are amazing like the fried smelts. Crisp light and the fresh hummus to dip in must have been ground the minute before they served it. The stuffed Kalamari are great- filled with feta and orange. The decor is beautiful. High back chairs, an enormous fireplace, lots of wood and many windows. And the oven is right out in the open. Quiet street as well so you don't feel as if you're on tourist row

I've been to Kokkari four times previously and all four times it was excellent. This fifth time, however, was a big miss in my book. We had the specials (a spit-roasted lamb with roasted yukon gold potatoes and fresh arugala on top; and a roasted dora fish with potatoes and something else) and while they weren't bad, they also weren't anything special either. The lamb was a touch on the dry side but overall "meh" and the fish was rather flavorless. However, their special vanilla ice cream with baklava was excellent, and I dislike baklava. Despite this off-night, I still quite like Kokkari and would go again and will continue to recommend it.

The experience overall was good and the food was great. Another couple only two tables away arrived later than us and left earlier than us. I was handicapped with a cane visibly walking slower and in pain yet we were given a table that was not handicap friendly. There were serval other empty tables available but I do not understand why the hostess did not try to assign us one of those talbes. There were really long pauses between appetizers, main course and dessert. They ran out of parfait glasses for the Greek Sundae. At these prices, it seems unusual to be short on glasses. It was our First Wedding Anniversary. I don't know if we'd come back for our second.

My dining companion and I agreed unanimously never to return to this place. Without a major overhaul in food quality I dont think they would impress us. The waitor was very awkward. He asked me if we liked the wine and I said that I infact liked it but didnt think my dinner companion did to which he just said..."well let's hope he does". We ordered 7 appetizers and weren't inspired by any of them. The potatoes were dry, saganahki was rubbery and burned, zuccini cakes on the dry side, meatballs lacked any complexity in flavor, the aspargus was overcooked, the riblets were so fatty that we just had a few bites and left them on the table while we quickly asked for the check to leave and put the experience behind us.

We generally enjoyed the experience. I did not like the table assignment, and we were in a corrider that was dark, slightly cramped by columns and somewhatloud. The banquettes are too low. I was surprised that this was the only accommodation, given the very early time we ate, and given that there were many open tables that were better situated and seemingly more comfortable. I wonder if the table assignment was due to how I made the reservation. We prefer the Palo Alto branch, overall. Bob
