The menu was diverse and there were plenty of options to choose from. In fact, I had trouble choosing between the options offered. The cherry tart with kirsch sabayon was to die for. If anything, I wish that the dessert wine offerings had been a bit broader. That being said, this was the most memorable meal that I've had in the past 6 months. Will definitely be back!!!

I have been a fan of Steve's restaurants since the original Cobras & Matadors and was very pleased with Church & State on my first visit some weeks ago and again at lunch this week. I love the vib of the place, the location, decor and food are all terrific. The staff is attentive, friendly and knowledgable without being annoying. I would only note and please just a suggestion...prices at lunch are a little high for a bistro. Dinner seemed perfectly acceptable but at lunch I think they could have a bigger crowd if it was a little bit of a deal. Otherwise keep up the good work and we will be back.

Hip and delicious oasis in downtown. New chef, Walter Manzke (ex Bastide) has given this place new life. Had the alsacian tart, bouillabaise, steak frites, short ribs and cherry tart. All superb. I will be back. Bravo.

I thought the food and service was great. It is an out of the way restaurant, but worth the trip. The restaurant has a great french bistro feel, with fantastic french inspired cuisine and great service. My only wish would be a signature drink menu.

After a bit of a tough time finding the place (despite what the maps show, Industrial is blocked off east of Central; you have to go around), everything was wonderful. The atmosphere and design were perfect. Service was very attentive and knowledgeable. Wine list was short but had some very nice French choices. Oh, and the food! The salt cod beignets were a delightful treat. The roast chicken with vegetables, bacon and brown butter was, far a fair distance, the best plate of chicken I have ever had. Some very nice cheeses along with some great treats - a variety of jams like white fig, black cherry and licorice, honey, and apricot. Very friendly people. I will eat here again and again.

9:37pm, we were seated . Waitress did not come around for about 10 minutes, then it took 10 more minutes just to have water served, 10 minutes went by and she came back. The dinner for the night was a set menu of a four course meal. I understand that everyone was there for Valentine's day, although I have never had dinner where each course took such a long time to arrive to our table. By the time we were finished with one course , we were completely starved for the next. Dinner for us ended at midnight. Which ruined our plans to go hang out at a bar for the rest of the evening as just waiting for dinner wiped us out. Amazing food, will I go for Valentine's day? No way.

We decided to check it out on Valentines day. The service was pretty bad, we were ignored for most of our dining experience and even had to ask to get our water glasses refilled. Food courses were slow to show and once my main arrived it was cold and the chicken was overcooked.

There were 2 reasons we choose Church & State for our dinner: good food, great locations close to the Ahmanson theater. We have been waiting for years to enjoy a variety of good restaurants in this area. It is a delight to dine at Church & State and then easily drive to the theater. The food is interesting, well prepared and perfect for that French bistro feel.

  • Easily the best meal we've

Easily the best meal we've had in years. While never a huge fan of brasserie food, this restaurant has made converts of us. We started with terrines (Rilletes de Cochon, and Foie Gras). My wife preferred the Foie Gras (but what does she know), I preferred the Rilletes. Even the assiete de charcuterie (what can you do with that?) was amazing with many of the offerings made on site... very different. The moelle de boeuf (bone marrow) was unlike anything tasted anywhere else. Superb. The moules mariniere (mussels) was the best we've ever had (my wife has always loved mussels, whereas I've tolerated them... no more... they were great!) The soups (onion and mussel) were also VERY good. The only negative was the noise level (but worth it).

Overall, enjoyed the experience. Hostess, very friendly, welcoming. We were seated in a very small table for 2 in the middle of the restaurant (directly in a cold draft). Later I observed that other couples (of 2) were seated at larger tables. We actually had trouble with positioning all of our plates because the table was too small. Food. Appetizers were great, endive salad the best I've ever had. My wife ordered the fish entree (she enjoyed it). My boulliabaise was too salty...almost as if the stock had reduced too much. The shell fish, et. al was very good. It was obvious there were regulars and friends of the management. They seem to occupy a lot of the servers time and effort. I felt a little like an outsider.

Fun interior design combined with good food (the salmon tart was really great) led to a very nice experience. It's a tad on the noisy side so I wouldn't look to this spot for a quiet romantic dinner. There's a pub across the street that makes for a nice after-dinner drink if you're so inclined.

Of the bistro genre, a fine addition. They do not pretend to be outrageously inventive or terminally hip. Instead, they offer classics in an interesting olf building in a section of "new LA." It's comfortable food, well presented, and the prices are modest. I will go back again.

nice ambiance in a somewhat out of the way, but hip location. The drinks at the bar were good. The flat breads we tasty, but the rest of the everyone's food was just okay. The lamb shanks were not fully cooked so a bit tough and under seasoned and the mushroom ravioli was watery as tasteless, while the onion soup was all onion and bread with no soup, but tasted good. The wine list is good and not overly expensive. However, the meal overall given the quality of food presented was a bit pricey. Good concept but needs to tighten up on the food, which summarizes most of Arroyo's restaurants.

    OpenTable Diner Since 2006

The interior is well done, evoking the sense of a Gallic bistro consistent with the casual, country French food. However, the service was spotty. For instance, when I arrived, the hostess was on the phone with her back to the door and did not greet me. Also, upon first approaching the bar, several bartenders were engaged in conversation with one another, and failed to acknowledge my presence for several minutes. In addition, after waiting for an extended period for our entrees, we were told that the kitchen had discarded our ticket and had not made the food. Considering that the restaurant has been open less than two months, some latitude should probably be granted, but nothing about my experience would make me recommend it to friends.
