A word from Shun Lee West
Conveniently located across from Lincoln Center and a startling revelation in shiny black lacquer, Shun Lee exudes Asian chic with grand authority.
For haute Chinese cuisine, it’s among New York City’s best. Regional offerings include crispy Grand Marnier prawns with honey walnuts (Canton), braised sea bass in hot bean sauce (Hunan) and shredded beef with leeks and hot peppers (Szechwan). Specialties include beggar’s chicken baked in lotus leaves and clay (requires one day’s notice), Hunan tripe, sweetbreads with black mushrooms and of course, Beijing Duck.

I did not have a good experience. It was too loud and crowded. They sat us by a super small table against the corner wall and we could barely move. The table right next to us it was too close and loud. I will not go back to this restaurant. The service and food were ok but not great as expected.

We were crowded like sardines at a tiny table for two in a glarey overlighted dining room. Dreadful ambience, very gawdily decorated dining room. Food was average but good for a Chinese restaurant. Does not compare to upscale Chinese resturants in San Francisco

We have been there many times. Food is always excellent. Table location this time was excellent--quiet. Service is usually very fast. But service this time was terrible. Food arrived slowly. Waiter rarely came by table to check on things. Long delay after finishing eating. I had to go to front desk to ask maitre d' for the bill.

Shun Lee West was a great place to have a fast dinner before attending a Lincoln Center concert. Although the atmosphere and service was great, the food came to our table cold. This was a great disappointment, but with limited time we didn't complain.

The waiters were very attentive. We arrived at 12 PM right on time, had drinks and meal all served in a timely fashion. We then were able to get to the show at Lincoln Center in plenty of time to settle into our seats and enjoy the entertainment. It was a pleasant, well prepared and attentively served meal.

I have long been a fan of Chinese food, so I know that it usually features a nice balance of elements: just the right amount of protein with just the right amount of vegetables, using rice or noodles for the requisite starch. While the meat aspects of our recent meal were very good, the rice was over-sticky and there was an almost total absence of anything green on the plate. While many fine dining establishments make a practice of their vegetables being ordered a la carte, that sort of thing in a Chinese restaurant violates the cultural tradition of the cuisine. I had the Orange Beef and my wife orederd the Lemon Chicken -- both very good in what was on the plate, but notably deficient in what was absent.

For the first time in my life, I left a restaurant without leaving any tips! No matter how aweful the service was, I have always left 15% tips. But I even felt obligated NOT to tip this time. I told the waiter 3 times (as soon as we got there) that we had a performance to catch at Lincoln Center. 50 minutes later, we got the pecking duck as we were about to walk out angry. The dish was a joke. It had 2 burrito looking duck wraps for each person for $50, without additional cucumber/scallion pieces + sauces on the side. Total rip off for poor quality food. This restaurant tried to look upscale but the service and the food remain china-town quality. They should perhaps re-train their staffs and hire someone who can better do the time management

Shun Lee West was having some sort of computer meltdown the night we were there. At 6:45, the place was full and ALL the tables were empty...no food to be had anywhere. When two of our three dishes finally arrived, after my informing the Maitre D' that if the order didn't arrive within one minute we would have to leave for the theatre, it was cold. Shun Lee West usually has tasty food, even though hideously overpriced, but they hit a new low the other night. I might consider returning if the meal was complimentary, and I didn't have tickets to the opera! Bad. No excuse. Shameful. And the captains and waiters are just plain RUDE! Print that.

This was worse than a cafeteria. The waiter was totally disinterested in us. It took about 20 minutes to get our drinks, which he forgot, and then another wait for appetizers. They brought the main course while we were eating our appetizers. We sent it back. When the main course came back it was cold. They heated it up and it was total mush. Then when we complained to the captain, he had new main course dishes made up for us. We had to gulp the food down to get to the Philharmonic on time. Also it was extremely expensive and just not good food. We usually go to the cafe and enjoy it very much. The main restaurant is a disaster.

A consistently good pretheater choice. Efficient, courteous service. So efficient, in fact, that you don't want to place your order too soon upon being seated, or you'll be finished dinner too far in advance of curtain time. Once you know how to pace yourself, "it's a keeper."

The only glitch was the host at the entrance; I gave my name and my husband's name, not quite remembering which one I had made the reservations in. He quickly replied, "I don't have either name." I said that I had the confirmation with me (whew!) so it must be there. His co-host, who obviously looked more closely than he did, pointed out my name to him. It wasn't that he didn't see it at first, but rather the perfunctory manner in which he was ready to dismiss me. I reported the incident to another maitre d' at a station just before the entrance to the dining room. He thanked me for reporting it and, I will assume that he took care of it. Shun Lee is always a treat.

I recently went to a dinner at Shun Lee East arranged by my broker and was very impressed. It remindered me of the early years at Shun Lee East and and West so when I was looking for a restaurant before the opera and Shun Lee West was available, I wanted to give it a try again. Funny you should ask. I will not be going there again. If it wasn't for their location near Lincoln Center they certainly would not be in business. They are resting on their laurels. The place is shabby, seriously needs refurbishment. Food was all pre cooked, not served hot or even warm. Given all of those deficiencies it is also overpriced. Foodie beware, take a pass.
