I also put in a comment when I made the reservation that we were celebrating my husband's birthday. I never said another word and sure enough, they came around the corner singing with a dessert. Very nice! I didn't have to try to sneak away from the table or anything. I sat at the table the whole time and my husband was really surprised!

Great value and service. I will remember my night at HOB for a long time! From the hostess to the server to the carver to the busser, everyone knew their roles and it seemed like a perfectly timed "dance". I was amazed at how fast the staff could 'turnover' a dirty table to a spotless "clean' one. I will be back on my next visit to SF!

We had reservations at 8 p.m. arrived at 7 p.m. to have a cocktail prior to dinner, checked in and waited and waited, when we asked when will we be seated now already 8:15 they said you are next, people kept walking in the restaurant and they were being seated before, when we asked several times more, we were told again you are next. Well we finally were seated at 9 P.M. It was my husbands birthday dinner, how horrible for him. I understand if they run a little behind 10-15 minutes, ok. but an hour. We asked to speak to the manager and he was very apologetic, but by then we were not happy and it was very hard to enjoy the rest of our evening. I have always liked to dine at this place, but over the years it has really gotten worse.

The HOPR never disappoints me. The service and food are amazingly consistent and this place stands the test of time. The service is excellent and it is a favorite spot for me to bring out of town guests who are always impressed. The only draw back is the constant "Happy Birthday" celebrations that momentarily destroy the ambiance and otherwise pleasant atmosphere making you think you are at a TGI Fridays. Fortunately they are brief but unfortunately they are numerous. Despite all that, this is still my favorite place in the city for special occassions.

    OpenTable Diner Since 2004
    Dined on 6/21/2008
We had our annual family dinner and they were very accomadating regarding our large party. They did not rush us in any fashion which is always a plus, but they also dropped the ball slightly. Even though our waiter was delightful, he was obviously slammed with many large tables, and he took a long time to intoduce himself. Once that was done our first (of many) rounds of drinks took a considerable amount of time to arrive to the table. The dinner service went off without a hitch but lulled around dessert. It took over 25 minutes for dessert to even be addressed once the dinner plates were cleaned from the table. We will go back, because that is where we go for our "annual" dinner, but I may speak up and suggest another location if I find one

Our waiter was rude - he asked us immediately what wine we wanted & gave us 10 seconds to decide - he then proceeded to rush us thru ordering. One chair was broken we had to ask 3 times before a new one was brought over. it was unbearably hot in there - no A/C in the room we were in. I purchased an additional gift cert at the front desk for my daughters bday - she has reservations next Monday. I purposely went to the front desk so I could surprise her the day of her bday but & told the mgr I would be back to pick it up but he came & found me at a table in the bar where I was sitting with my daughter so there went the surprise.

The food is delicious! Try to not eat too much of the delicious bread in the beginning because you end up to full by the time your food gets there. But the prime rib is made to oder and is juicy and delicious. Mash potatoes to die for. And the apple martinis very good and sweet with a little kick to start your night. Been here before and came back with people that have never gone to House and Prime Rib and there sentiments were just the same.

The food and waitress were outstanding. That being said, we had made a reservation for 6:00pm on Father's Day. We arrived 20 minutes early and had to wait almost an hour before we could be seated and have our order placed. I thought having a reservation at a certain time meant you could count on being seated shortly thereafter, but I guess I was wrong. Very frustrating. We won't go next Father's Day. To damn crowded.

I have been to the House of Prme many times, and I must say this was the least enjoyable experience. Not because of the food, which was delicious, but because of the service. We had a new waiter (he admitted he was recently hired), and after the salad was served, we waited at least 45 minutes before we were served the entrees. The waiter was also not at all familiar with the wine list and offered no assistance. It was a Wednesday evening, and moderately busy, but something was definitely "off" with our service, for whatever reason.

The service was our biggest issue. We had a party of 6, however, one was running a bit late and initially they told us we could not be seated until he/she arrived which is absolutely appaling. After the hostess spoke w/ the manager, we were seated. In addition, our waiter was pleasant but lacked serving skills. He always crossed directly in my face as he was serving my husband to my left. Extremely rude....

Noise level was unbearable- it was difficult to have a conversation with the person next to me. The coffee was horrible (weak, lacked any flavor). Prime rib still top notch but they should warn guests that au jus is automatically served (this 'cooks' the meat). The salad was forgettable- an overly theatrical performance for a limp salad.

I have been going to this restaurant since 1998 and not once have I been disappointed My husband and I took our best friends there couple of weeks ago and they were really impressed. Last Friday we took my Aunt and Uncle there on their anniversary for the first time and they loved the quality of food and service. The host was kind to give us a table by the fire place as soon as I mentioned it was a special occasion. It's one of the most consistent restaurants I know of. My overall review is "EXCELLENT AS ALWAYS"! Great food, great service, great price, great bar, great EVERYTHING!

I have been a huge fan and loyal and frequent patron of House of Prime Rib since 1988, and for the first time, I must say that I was disappointed by the taste of the prime rib, which was not cooked to perfection (the medium rare was more medium, and was therefore, quite dry) and was not seasoned as well as it usually is. The same went for the creamed spinach, which is usually more flavorful. I really hope that Friday was just an aberration, as I have always considered the prime rib at House of Prime Rib to the absolute best there is.

If you want great prime rib, this is the place to go. In fact, with the exception of a fish option, they don't serve anything else. It seems to be a fairly popular restaurant and it's always packed each time I go. Their bar isn't particularly good at mixed drinks, but the wine list is pretty good. Not particularly fancy ambiance and there is a pretty good background buzz from the other patrons.
