The food and waitress were outstanding. That being said, we had made a reservation for 6:00pm on Father's Day. We arrived 20 minutes early and had to wait almost an hour before we could be seated and have our order placed. I thought having a reservation at a certain time meant you could count on being seated shortly thereafter, but I guess I was wrong. Very frustrating. We won't go next Father's Day. To damn crowded.

Our waiter was a tad too rapid fire, canned speach, when describing the menu and taking our orders. Food was excellent and would return and hopefully experience a more subdued waiter.

I have been to the House of Prme many times, and I must say this was the least enjoyable experience. Not because of the food, which was delicious, but because of the service. We had a new waiter (he admitted he was recently hired), and after the salad was served, we waited at least 45 minutes before we were served the entrees. The waiter was also not at all familiar with the wine list and offered no assistance. It was a Wednesday evening, and moderately busy, but something was definitely "off" with our service, for whatever reason.

    OpenTable Diner Since 2007

The service was our biggest issue. We had a party of 6, however, one was running a bit late and initially they told us we could not be seated until he/she arrived which is absolutely appaling. After the hostess spoke w/ the manager, we were seated. In addition, our waiter was pleasant but lacked serving skills. He always crossed directly in my face as he was serving my husband to my left. Extremely rude....

Noise level was unbearable- it was difficult to have a conversation with the person next to me. The coffee was horrible (weak, lacked any flavor). Prime rib still top notch but they should warn guests that au jus is automatically served (this 'cooks' the meat). The salad was forgettable- an overly theatrical performance for a limp salad.

I have been going to this restaurant since 1998 and not once have I been disappointed My husband and I took our best friends there couple of weeks ago and they were really impressed. Last Friday we took my Aunt and Uncle there on their anniversary for the first time and they loved the quality of food and service. The host was kind to give us a table by the fire place as soon as I mentioned it was a special occasion. It's one of the most consistent restaurants I know of. My overall review is "EXCELLENT AS ALWAYS"! Great food, great service, great price, great bar, great EVERYTHING!

I have been a huge fan and loyal and frequent patron of House of Prime Rib since 1988, and for the first time, I must say that I was disappointed by the taste of the prime rib, which was not cooked to perfection (the medium rare was more medium, and was therefore, quite dry) and was not seasoned as well as it usually is. The same went for the creamed spinach, which is usually more flavorful. I really hope that Friday was just an aberration, as I have always considered the prime rib at House of Prime Rib to the absolute best there is.

If you want great prime rib, this is the place to go. In fact, with the exception of a fish option, they don't serve anything else. It seems to be a fairly popular restaurant and it's always packed each time I go. Their bar isn't particularly good at mixed drinks, but the wine list is pretty good. Not particularly fancy ambiance and there is a pretty good background buzz from the other patrons.

The House of Prime Rib is a classic example of a great restaurant....one that knows what they are famous for and delivers on the promise. The food is consistently veryy good; the service spot on; the room impeccably clean; and with Gus working the room to insure that everyone is having a great time, if is impossible to leave unsatisfied. Everyone who ever thought about opening a restaurant needs to dine here to see how it is done day in and day out. No wonder while others suffer the wrath of the economy, it is standing room only.

This was my first "Steak" experience and it was a lot of fun. The ambiance, the service, the food - very good. I love the way the serve the salad and the baked potato. My friend and I split a meal and they were very accommodating (they just charge a 7.50 split fee but that is because they double the side portions). Even that was too much food. ( I think we have left overs for at least 2 more meals). I would recommend this place to anyone.

Our group dines regularly at this restaurant when we visit SF. The servers are excellent and the food, generally is quite good. The portions are, indeed, ample and considering the price, the meal is a respectable bargain, comparatively speaking. There is a reassuring consistency at the HOPR,ideally suited to its basic menu.

Food was good, but customer service is terrible. People that work there are rude. They cannot make small accommodations like switching one table for 4 with another table for 4 so people can sit next to each other. I had a reservation for 7 and 4 and asked if there was anything with the tables near each other. They rudely said no without even checking. When the table for 7 got seated there was an empty table for 4 right next to it! We asked if our party of 4 could sit there and whoever was going to sit there could take our table. To make a long story short, they wouldn't do it.

    Dined on 5/25/2008
This place is a historic SF landmark. It is a bit of a throwback, but in a charming way. The food is surprisingly and consistently good -- the prime rib is some of the best I have had, and the infamous salad is cleverly done with egg, beets, and a sherry vinagerette that tastes a lot like Thousand Island. HOPR mixes a mean dirty martini. The crowd is festive and you can tell a lot of people choose this spot for a special occasion. Though the setting takes you back a few years, the food lives up to San Francisco's high standards.

The prime rib was excellent, the service was terrible...and I wanted to love it! First, we had to wait at the bar for about 5-10 minutes for our table to be ready...and not one bartender (although there were 2 on and 1 bar back) offered us a drink or a drink menu. We had wanted to order a bottle of wine. Then we got seated and it was a minimum of 5 mins before we got greeted. We had no water either...I had to ask twice to get some for the table. We ordered our second bottle of wine after the main course had been on the table for about 3 mins. We didn't get it until we were done with our food. There was no pepper in the mill and when I asked for some, the guy brought back the empty mill and I had to ask another server for the pepper t

This last time we also had to wait quite a while between our salad and main course. well, I have been at this restaurant the second time. This time some stuff was not as perfect as the first time. One ordered medium-well came well done whereas another medium came rare-medium. Our waitress had to serve at least 5 tables which made her seem over-worked. The ribs itself had way to much fat on it. 3 people on our table decided on the Kings cut (the biggest), almost 40% was left in fat when the waitress cleaned the table.
