A word from Ad Hoc
Thomas Keller’s ad hoc, which literally means "for this purpose," was originally intended to be a temporary restaurant, open during the development of a very different concept. But, due to its loyal following, it was decided that it must be a permanent fixture in Yountville. ad hoc serves a prix fixe, 4-course chalkboard menu, changing daily. Food is served family style and reminiscent of the comfort food with which Chef Keller grew up.

We enjoyed Ad Hoc very much. We were in California while my husband attended a class at the CIA. Have been to many great restaurants but truely loved the "idea" behind this one! Thomas Keller has a winner in our eyes! Bill and Karen Dunn Webster, NY

A delish, well thought out meal with the "best of the best." Each dish, although simple, was the best that it could be. Had the gem lettuce salad, fried chicken, berry parfait and coffee. Noise level was moderate, but music enhanced the the mood and sound proofing did the job of making it all relaxing and enjoyable. Bartender, Daniel, was amazingly helpful in making appropriate selections and server was perfect. What more could you ask?

Every element of dinner was perfectly prepared...we cleaned our plate of osso bucco which had amazingly tender meat and intense tomato flavor in the sauce. Yum! If I were to add anything, it would be to suggest wine pairings with the courses.

This was my second time at the restaurant. My boyfriend and I loved it. My only complaint was that the entree was hangar steak, which was the same entree I had when I went last year. Regardless, everything was fresh and tasteful. The food was so good that we had to ask for the dessert to go.

With a daily changing menu, and the impossibility of scoring a table at French Laundry, this is THE spot to dine in Napa and enjoy Thomas Keller's incomparable cuisine. In fact, Chef Keller and Todd English were both at the restaurant the night we were there. It was truly a memorable occasion.

Food was very good, especially with the limited menu for which the restaurant is known. We were there on a quiet Wednesday evening. Service was very good, (not a word when we asked to have two meat plates sent back to cook a bit longer for our tastes). Dessert was okay, but not great. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone.

My husband went to Ad Hoc because it was recommended. Once seated, the staff was very attentive and fun. We were comped 2 glasses of champagne, because we had to wait 45minutes to be seated for our 8pm reservation. We were not starving, so we were pleased with their apologies. The food was good but overpriced. The only option was to go with the prie fix (sp?) that consisted of a DELICIOUS salad that had potatoes and a type of ham. The combination was outstanding! Next we had a cheese and nut tray with homemade strawberry jam. The jam was so good we asked if they sold it by the jar. Next, we had the main course of fried chicken and macaroni & cheese. It was nothing out of this world. The brownie dessert was awesome. Beware: HUGE PORTIONS!

My husband and I enjoyed the food at Ad Hoc, but were a bit put-off by the wait staff and felt completely rushed with our meal. It was my husband's birthday so we started off with a glass of champagne which we received shortly before receiving our first course. We were fortunate to dine on fried chicken night, which is quite a bit of food, but felt rushed. We were asked quite frequently if we were done, when we clearly still had food on our plate. After my husband and I had eaten half of our dessert, the waitress came by again and said "that's about all our guests can usually eat." At this point we asked for the dessert to go. It was apparent that the restaurant wanted to turn over our table. I will go back, but hope service improves.

The restaurant ran out of two items (the protein and the cheese which were listed on the menu on the phone the morning of our reservation), so that was frustrating in light of the fact that there are no choices regarding what food to order. The server apologized and was nice about it, but the lack of choices of food will deter me from dining there again.

Great destination for those living in San Francisco who are tired of SF's long wait lists for mediocre food. Staff members are courteous, passionate, and knowledgable. Food is excellent and indeed "comforting". Salads are wonderful and tasty, even for someone like me who hates vegetables. The only annoying thing was that Ad Hoc does not have mochas, even though I saw someone with an espresso. Is it hard to add chocolate to an espresso to make a mocha?

With a single menu, no choice, the restaurant must be perfect. It wasn't. Seasoning was uneven. One of the dishes had bizarre combinations. The dessert was dry. The waiter never even tried to pour our wine; he seemed untrained. The room was so noisy that a table nearby a foursome overwhelmed us. Food was fresh and the servings more than generous.

Ad Hoc is almost the Perfect Restaurant. Imagine normal American comfort food (such as a Waldorf salad) taken to gourmet extremes in quality and flavor. So stunning with a perfect vignagrette and a tiny amount of salt we wnated to lick the plates and serving platter. The people on the Napa Valley Wine train told us the best nights are the Buttermilk Fried Chicken. I can hardly imagine how good this would be. Get on the web site and sign up for the daily menus.... mouth-watering, touch of heaven. The restaurant is located in a great location just down the street from it's sister restaurants - Bouchon and the French Laundry. Totally superb. The wine list is limited but superlative - we enjoyed Once - a local meritage by famous chefs.
