A word from Legal Sea Foods - Chestnut Hill
The signature dish at Legal Sea Foods – really fresh fish.

One of our first restaurants and still a popular lure, we are located on Route 9 in the Chestnut Hill Shopping Center. We are still keeping things fresh at our bar, our open dining room and in our take-out counter and Fish Market.

Legal Sea Foods has long proven that a consistent, high quality dining experience never goes out of style. With over 40 varieties of fresh fish and shellfish available throughout the year as well as an award-winning wine list, there’s no doubt why legions of fans have fallen hook, line and sinker.

We’ve received a boatload of accolades including “#1 Best Seafood Restaurant” (USA Today, 2013), “Most Popular Boston Restaurant” (Zagat, 2012/2013), “Best Seafood Restaurant” (Improper Bostonian, 2010), “Best Chowder” (Boston Magazine, 2010) and the honor of serving our legendary New England Clam Chowder at every presidential inauguration since 1981.

Have been a reguolar here and at other Legal restaurants over the years. Food was very good. Kim, our waitress was absolutely wonderful. She was the perfect combination of warm with professional and very knowledgable. Made it look so easy! She really enhanced the experience.

Food great, waitress great. Problem made reservation and asked for window seat, low light level vision. Just about empty when arrived. Took buy the window seats and brought you to a dark end of restaurant. Explained to hostess light level problem. So asked to sit by a window. It was originally ok, after sitting came back and said those tables where reserved for a party of 16. Moved after complaining since restaurant was empty and usual large party room was empty. Did go to other table and mangers gave me all sorts of apology. They then set the table for 14 not 16. I had a great waitress and good food. Finished my meal told them I would pay full bill not looking for discount. Note when We left the restaurant the table set up was empty.

This is my neighborhood Legal's and we have eaten here from time to time over many years. It's consistently good food, good service, and friendly. One especially good thing about Legal's is that they take food sensitivities seriously, with a gluten free menu that includes warm GF rolls. How wonderful that they can do that. I highly recommend this Legal's in every way!

Great food and service per usual. I went on a Saturday night with a large party. We had a great time except the table across from us had a bunch of tween girls that would break out into song every few minutes.... it was cute after the first 3 times, however it proved to distract our group and became annoying quite quickly. Although I did not complain it was apparent that the boisterous tween girls were making a spectacle throughout our end of the restaurant. I really wish that the manager would have stepped in to tone them down a bit. Otherwise it was a solid experience.

This was where my husband wanted to go for his birthday. We could have gone somewhere fancier and more expensive, but he wanted his favorite meal -- spicy fish and chips, with Boston cream pie for dessert. He got his wish, along with a nice quiet corner table and excellent service. I had an excellent martini to go along -- the bar never disappoints. Legal's take on Boston cream pie is the best!

We done here fairly often and we're usually very happy with the food. My husband's filet and stuffed shrimp are cooked just right, my cioppino was flavorful and brimming with seafood. Our waitress took a while to warm up to us, but usually the service is great.

Took out of town guests to Legal for traditional New England seafood. This is always the best. Enjoyed everything. Loved Anna's schrod. Loved the veggies - grilled asparagus with shaved Parmesan. Fresh mashed potatoes - a meal unto itself. Desert - chocolate pudding cake with chocolate ice cream on the side.

Very surprised, as I dine here fairly frequently, that we waited 30 minutes for drinks to arrive from the bar.(meanwhile we were assured "they're working on it>" When the drinks arrived, they were more like tall lemonades than the whiskey sours we had ordered, specifying a brand of bourbon. There was no bourbon, lots of ice, and a few other unidentifiable ingredients. The waitress offered to take the order to "another bartender." By that time the food was arriving. How come a bartender in this restaurant does not know what a whiskey sour is ? Hope it's a one-time fluke.

We were celebrating a graduation with a party of 8. The restaurant was busy on a Friday evening. It started out fine but we felt abandoned as dinner progressed. We forgave the waitstaff as our entrees took forever but we basically never saw anyone after that. Our water glasses were never filled once other than on arrival and we had to ask for our check and skipped coffee and dessert. The food was fine. It was the service that bothered us.

For the best quality and delicious food, Legal is still my favorite restaurant. I know I am not a typical customer, but still on my wish list is that RHODE ISLAND CLAM CHOWDER would return to the menu. I buy it in the take out store when I can do so. It is one of the most satisfying, tasty soups one could ever hope to eat.

Some of the other staff at other Legals need to take a lesson on her customer service skills! Thanks Betsy for making our evening so enjoyable.

We were worried about the restaurant being insane due to graduation weekend. However, when we arrived a few minutes early, minus two in our party, they sat us right away. And they were very gracious when the two latecomers were delayed 30 minutes due to travel issues. I did feel that our server could have been a little be more on the ball but she was friendly and we got what we needed. Food was good. I will return.

I've been going to Legals since 1982. I've eaten at the chain certainly more than 100 times. It's been consistent & reliable all these years. The food is excellent, although these days the menu is much less expansive. The ambiance is what you'd expect at a large chain restaurant—often crowded & loud, with servers & customers hurrying past in every direction. The prices aren't cheap. But the fish is always fresh & expertly prepared. Pro tip: If you see in the retail case up front that they're selling a species of fish that's not on the restaurant menu, they'll happily cook it for you specially. My fave dish, bluefish with mustard sauce, was no longer on the menu, but bluefish was selling at the counter & they prepared it for me perfectly.

This is our go-to restaurant for guests from out of town - consistently high quality, outstanding seafood and enough variety for the pickiest and most non-fish eaters as well. This time we were seated in a room we've never been in before, at the point furthest from reception, which lacked the ambience of most of the restaurant, and was downright noisy by the time we left. But the service and food were still excellent, from appetizers through desserts, all of which we had. Fresh, fresh, fresh, fish, vegetables, fruit, baked goods, yumm

I have been coming to Legal Sea Foods for many years and the food is always great. On this particular day, while the food was great once again, the service was not up to the usual good level and we were told that our server had 15 tables to take care of. I ordered the marinated chicken. I noticed the broccoli had huge brown chunks on the stems....I figured it was just some kind of seasoning or grill marks and proceeded to eat it. Imagine my surprise when I took one gritty, earthy tasting bite. I looked through the rest of the broccoli and there were HUGE CHUNKS of brown muddy dirt on the stems. The manager came over, apologized and offered me a dessert "on the house" and another meal. I had already finished most of my chicken and potatoes, so I declined the "extra meal" but gladly took a piece of Boston Cream Pie. Dessert came, it was good. Then, the bill came. THEY STILL CHARGED US FOR MY MEAL. Yes, the $21.99 meal that was covered in dirt was on our check.

Legal Seafoods is really milking its big name to charge about $5 more per entree than any other similar restaurant. Nevertheless, the customers line up and the restaurant herds them in and out. the food is competently done but the ambiance is that of cattle herd and you feel the management is overtly just after your $$$.

Two appetizers, two entrees, one bottle sparkling water, two glasses of wine each while sitting at the bar....total with tax and tip? $164.00. Really good food, but really not worth that much money. Service was good, but none of the usual staff were there, and the newbies didn't quite keep up with the crowd and needs.

Definitely better Legal experience than the Burlington location that I had previously wrote about. We went on a Saturday night with a reservation so seated promptly. It was crowded and lively as we expected. The food, service and vibe was what we are accustom to at Legal. The only thing odd was 3 out of 7 of us ordered fish chowder and each of us got varying amounts in our bowl. My brother's looked like a normal serving, mine looked like it was going to overflow at any minute and my mom's looked like they ran out of chowder. Her bowl was larger than ours so maybe they ran out of the normal chowder bowl they serve it in. Location does matter and Legal in Chestnut Hill is a good one!

Took out-of-town relatives here for dinner at 5:30 on a Saturday night, i.e. not during prime time. Food was poorly prepared and overpriced; drowning in greasy onion strings, which filled more than half the plate. Really unappetizing presentation. Service was rushed and distracted. I made a reservation in advance and specified a table due to a person with mobility issues and the hostess headed straight for the tables on the upper platform. I objected and pointed to all the vacant tables on the lower level, which was greeted with a "I have to get permission" attitude. This location is a poor representative of the Legal chain. DO NOT GO TO THIS LOCATION.

Legal has been a good, solid choice for tasty seafood, and a good place to bring the whole family; however, we had one wrong dish brought out and this mistake was never adequately corrected, and the waiter was not very pleasant. The food was middle of the road good. Creamy polenta and lightly sauteed spinach were tasty sides. Scallops, lobster and mixed pick were all well prepared, but nothing was exceptional. Great martinis.
