We were very comfortable in the ample booth for five people. The service was great and we never felt rushed. The buffet brunch was very fresh, plates were being made all the time. The food was very good , we especially liked the Swedish meatballs and the home fries! We would have liked a veggie dish but the mixed berries were delicious. We look forward to another visit perhaps to try the regular menu.

We chose this restaurant on a whim, it was the best "pick from a hat" I've ever choosen . The manager sat us and proceeded to tell us about their concept and how the old cook books on the back wall were recipesthat gave the chefs inspiration on their dishes. We started with a salad and had a considerable sided dinner. We tried leaving room for dessert, but that didn't happen. All in all I don't want to dig in and explain every detail of how amazing the night went, I will leave that for you to have on your own. One of the best restaurants I have ever experienced.

Mercifully we had eaten here on a different occasion and found the food to be very good. This time we ate on a Sunday with only option being brunch buffet. Food was only okay to good. Platters are on counter & not under any heat lamp so items such as their pancakes while having a decent flavor were almost cold. The selection was nice with good variety, but temperature of food was lukewarm and some items (such as sausage patty) were only okay as far as taste. It was a bit of a disappointment as I know they are capable of great food. Because we had been there for a non-buffet meal we will certainly return -- just not for their brunch buffet! Service, coffee, overall feel of place was very good and I would recommend it for other than buffet.

Had a great meal here with a group of four. The atmosphere was perfect - cozy and intimate, but still a touch relaxed. Definitely the first time I've had beer out of a chilled silver stein! Was very impressed with the food. Mushroom pasta was very flavorful. I will be back, and will look forward to trying other items on the menu!

First time to visit, I had high expectations and was not disappointed. It is very comfy inside, and you feel good when you walk in. Although small, it did not feel like we were squeezed together. Appetizers and salad were beautifully displayed and a nice starter. Mushrooms under glass was a delicious stack of sautéed mushrooms under a glass dome that when removed presented a steaming aroma. It was really tasty. Halibut and sole were our choices, light and tasty. We look forward to returning and trying the other things on the menu.

Went for the buffet brunch with a group of 4 this past Sunday! We made a reservation, which I recommend as it was quite busy. We were seated right away and greeted with mini muffins. Brunch was delicious- with lots of hot fresh items- the donuts were delicious, as were the scrambled eggs and home fries. My only complaint is with the coffee- we ordered 4 coffees for the table, which came out in 2 French presses (yum). Or server failed to tell us (or show us) the expense of the coffee- and 8 cups later, it was reflected on our bill, at almost $4 per CUP! That would frankly be my only complaint! Come with a good appetitie! The music was great, ambiance was perfect for Sunday funday :)

I had a very poor experience last Saturday. Eat here before and it was good. Had a reservation for 8:15 with visitors from out of town. We arrived and hostess was nowhere to be found. Finally she surfaced, told us that a # of parties ahead of us(would be seated when table available but no idea when). Waited and grabbed seat at the bar. 30 minutes later, asked again about table, she basically ignored us by proving same answer (during all this time an apology was never expressed). 45 min later I asked to speak with manager. To my surprise she mentions "I'm the Manager". I could not believe that a manager would treat commuters with such arrogance. Expressed by dissatisfaction with her attitude and we left and went across the street for dinner.

Extremely friendly and helpful staff, great cocktail list at reasonable prices for S. End. Menu is full of eclectic, hearty dishes, takes on classics and adventurous combinations as well! Definitely a must visit, this was my second time and I we be returning. No parking validation is the only downside.

It's nice to see a classic style but unpretentious French bistro in the South End. The food is excellent and consists of vintage dishes that graced French restaurants at the turn of the last century like steak tartar and sole meunière. The place itself small and intimate and not so busy you cannot get a table at the last moment. The cocktails are also excellent and hark back to days of yore. The service is very good though maybe a tad bit over attentive sometimes.

This was our first time at Kitchen. I had read about it and wanted to give it a try and I am happy that we did. I really liked the menu and was happy with the food. I would choose the Verte Salad again - a bit boring. I had the crispy duck and my husband had the sole which were both very good. Portions were healthy. We also had the Bananas Foster (which I shouldn't have because I ate too much of the duck and black eyed peas already!) but it was deliscious. My only complaint was the service - specifically the waiter. He had to be brand new. He really didn't know what he was doing. I will give the place credit though - the hostess jumped in when she noticed that he was struggling and kept the experience on track. we'll return!

I went to Kitchen recently for brunch. It was ok. I like the idea of a complimentary muffin, but I would like it better if the muffin was delicious and memorable. Yes, it was freshly baked, but nothing special. And not to be picky, but the butter was rock solid, which certainly didn't help my "muffin" experience. As far as my omlette...well, after three or four bites I finally got to the spinach and mushrooms, which were quite tasty. Overall, I am not in a hurry to get back to Kitchen BUT I would give it another shot...there are glimpses of potential here.

My husband and I really enjoyed our experience here! Try the scallops as an appetizer. Being from the south, it is hard for me to find really good grits! However, the grits were a great addition to the scallops! I had the crispy half duck as my entree, while my husband had the pork and beans. Both were wonderful and the portions were very generous! We will definitely be back!

My spouse and I have been big fans of Marliave and Grotto since they first opened, and are just as pleased with their newest sibling restaurant, Kitchen - the menu reads like a history lesson, showcasing cuisine from six centuries of Western tradition. Start off at the bar for a spectacular craft cocktail and their whimsical bar bites -- the cocktail meatballs and the pigs in blanket are fun and inexpensive.

Tucked in to a street level location in a Tremont Street brownstone, this place is a real gem. You definitely should get a reservation, there are not a lot of tables. The service is great -- not a complaint. The food is over the top good. Starting with the salads which were two of the best we'd ever tasted. There were five of us so we got to sample a variety of entrees and desserts. Everything was top notch. Highly recommend this restaurant.

Cocktail was more of a slushy, glass was packed solid with ice chips that got stuck in straw, literally had to remove half of ice chips to get to any liquid. Their special chicken dish was tender but overly salty (too salty to finish it, and I like salt!); mussels were good as was cheeseburger and desert of warm donut holes. Nothing was outstanding. Based on this experience, would not return. Too bad, since we enjoyed the atmosphere and they had a very good selection of beer.

I took my fiance to Kitchen for his birthday, and we had an absolutely perfect meal. It was late on a Sunday night and the restaurant was pretty much empty, to our great surprise: we liked having the place to ourselves! The service was wonderful throughout: our server, the manager, and the bartender all came to check on us and make sure everything was going well. The menu is composed of classic recipes, listed by the date they were created: this is a really fun concept! We each had appetizers and main course, with wine pairings. The food was cooked perfectly, just to our liking, and presented beautifully. My fiance said it was the best meal he's ever had, and he's eaten at a lot of great places!

Four of us had a wonderful dinner at Kitchen. We started with the mushrooms under glass and had the fun of sharing the aroma of the glass before devouring the delicious creamy mushrooms. My lobster thermidor was spectacular and I even liked the gnocchi, which I usually don't care for. Other diners raved about the pork and how the beans were cooked perfectly, not mushy. The coffee is some of the best and the china cups are elegant. It was a very special and well-done meal all around. While not inexpensive, our meals with a glass of wine came in at around $50 per person which is a deal considering the quality of the food.

Had wanted to check this place out for a long time due to the more unique take of having "time honored recipes" with the date of inception, according to the waiter. We came with a group of 5 after work, and there were only 6 other people in the entire restaurant, but yet it took 20 minutes for the waiter to bring drinks back, and we didn't even order anything that complicated (e.g. beer). The food was very ho-hum, especially considering the very inflated prices. I had the "pork and beans," which is something I could make better at home. They seemed to have changed the menu recently (e.g. I don't think they are serving duck anymore), so maybe that was throwing everything of. Altogether I think we spent 3 hours there, not by intent.

If you enjoy good cooking, this is a place you must visit. I do plenty of cooking at home, so when I go to a restaurant, I like to be wowed by the skill of the chefs. And that was definitely my experience. The crispy half-duck was amazing, the salads were beautiful, and there are some delicious plates with wild mushrooms. The only spot that was a little weak was dessert - the ice creams were very good, as was the butterscotch pudding, but the homemade donuts were fried too long and very tough - a shame, given the delicious fruit preserves surrounding them. But Kitchen is a spot to return to. Very enjoyable and highly recommended!

I put that the noise level is energetic, and it is quite loud in the front of the restaurant where the bar is. There is a quieter back room, so ask for that if you want a quieter or more intimate space. The food sounds better than it is, that is that the menu items sound fabulous but neither our duck or our sole was perfectly prepared. I'm not even sure the sole was sole. The tarte tatin was mixed, with the apple tarte being not very good and the maple ice cream fabulous. I think a few changes in bringing up the food preparation a notch would bring this to "fit for foodies."

This was a difficult review to write. I liked Kitchen for the most part. The room and ambiance were both very comfortable and the noise level was just right. The food was good. Not great, but good. That's really the problem. The prices are very very high, so I guess I was expecting to be blown away by the food and I wasn't. It's just a very expensive meal and I expected more out of it.

Had brunch on a warm fall morning and was most impressed with the service. Manager Danielle was so helpful and all the staff were attentive. Great outdoor seating which is wonderfully comfortable and so dog friendly. The baked to order complimentary muffin and french press coffee are a great way to begin the meal.
