We were very pleased with the experience of dining at Tosca including a great bottle of wine and good service. We thought the food was excellent, but we have had similar quality food for less money, which makes this place seem overpriced. The pasta dishes are very unique, which is a plus, but two out of the three of us ate steak/fish. Dessert menu did not tempt us at all for $10. Overall, we enjoyed our experience, but will not return any time soon in favor of trying other restaurants.

This could be a fine romantic restaurant if the decor was changed. The tables were tight. The curtains were an afterthought that seemed to exist to shield out the view of the street. The service seemed to be focused on large groups (8+). The pasta was lacking in most dishes. This seemed odd for an Italian restaurant. What was served was excellent. That includes the drinks from wine to ice tea.

My lunch partners seemed pleased, but I frankly was disappointed. The arugula and warm cheese special 1st course was interesting, but the arugula was more wilted than it should have been. The branzino with "balsamic zabione" was not good. The sauce was weirdly sweet (I suppose that's how it was supposed to be, with good balsamic, but it didn't fit). The fish was deeply fried, certainly overbrown with the skin on; and branzino is such a delicate fish. It was a shame. And for the money it should have been a lot better. I haven't been to Tosca in awhile. Won't be back in awhile either. Unfortunate. Good memories.

This restaurant has an old world charm with personal service to match. The menu was extensive and portions generous. We brought our young daughters and ordered the pre fixe menu for them to share. They each received full portions of each course at no extra charge. Of all the nice places we went for dinner, this was the only one where patrons actually dressed nicely. The pasta is exceptional -- everything was wonderful and special. Would definitley return, even with the kids.

The service and food were very good, probably the best Italian food in Washington, DC. Our pasta course was especially delicious, but the fish was also nice. The chef who came out to meet us offered that with advance notice, he might be able to prepare special Tuscan dishes we could request. We must come back during game season. Well-balanced, fairly priced list of Italian wines. I also liked the scene--family groups with children (well-behaved), tables of friends, and even some romantic couples with lovely linens, well-spaced tables and pleasant lighting.

All in all a very pleasing experience. Dishes ranged from "very good" to "excellent". Service was top notch, friendly, there when it should be, not at all intrusive. Decor was nice also.

The shrimp that came with the seafood linguine had the desinfectant flavor distinctive of shrimp in many USA restaurants. NASTY, I will never get used to it. The foie grass appetizer: the liver was too raw. The panna cotta was a disapointment - not the real cream flavor and texture. The interior decoration is cold and flat. The rest was just fine. A little overpriced, maybe. Very good service.

Tosca is by far the best Italian restaurant in Washington, DC. Executive Chef Massimo Fabbri is outstanding, and the staff that he leads is amazing. Having lived in Italy for a number of years, I can certainly attest that Tosca's food is what you would dream of eating when you visited Italy.

  • My first impression of Tosca
    OpenTable Diner Since 2008
    Dined on 3/15/2008
My first impression of Tosca was great.Quiet elegance without being overly stuffy, nice wine list. A great place to celebrate a birthday with friends. However, the experience declined from the start. We all ordered the prix fixe, wine pairing ($145 per person). I requested to substitute my main course from lamb to beef, an equal priced entree. The waiter first refused and then came back from the kitchen with an ok, however when it arrived he would not allow me to have the correct wine pairing. Our wines arrived long before the courses so twice they were gone before entrees came. When the semifredo arrived and one was a very different texture, the waiter actually argued about it rather than offering to change it. Very condescending.

This review is simple - simply the best meal I have ever eaten, hands down! From the time I walked in the door until the moment I left, I have never had a dining experience even come close to the one I had at Tosca. The service was otherworldly and the food was impeccable. You have to experience Tosca for yourself. Grab that special someone, wait for a special occasion (but don't wait too long) and head to Tosca for an evening of food and food service that you won't believe. Absolutely fantastic; I dream of the day I go back again. Simply the best DC has to offer!!!

The best Italian in all of DC! Generous portions for an upscale restaurant. Amazing housemade fresh pasta and have never been disappointed. The Rabbit Ragu with Papardelle was amazing and made Washingtonian's 10 top dishes in DC.
