A word from La Madia - A Contemporary Pizzeria
At La Madia, two pleasures - great food and distinctive, delicious wines - come together. La Madia is an urban restaurant that upholds Italian tradition. Every day, our chefs make our pizza dough and fresh pasta from scratch from little more than flour, water, and salt.
The menu is designed for sharing, with flavor-packed, wood-fired pizzas that change seasonally, inventive salads, and savory pasta dishes. Desserts are all made on the premises, in keeping with what's available in the market. The wine list is a wine lover's dream, with more than 75 wines by the glass and hundreds of bottles. And every week, we feature two of our favorite wines for just $6 per glass. In addition to wine and more than 25 beers, La Madia offers innovative cocktails, many of which are made from spirits infused in-house.

Our dinner was lovely and the service was outstanding. This is very consistent with every time I've visited, both at lunch and dinner. Definitely recommended if you are looking for something different.

We love going at lunch on Sunday. The food is still excellent, but it's not crowded and noisy as it is on Saturday night. The servers can spend more time with you if you need it (especially the wine list) but also know when you don't. Our favorites are the 3 cheese and the fennel sausage & onion pizzas.

We arrived a few minutes early but waited about 10 -- 15 minutes for our table to be ready. It was crowded (Saturday and the day after Valentine's Day.) The staff gave us frequent updates on our status, which was helpful. We thought we would have the Valentine's weekend menu (5 amazing looking courses), but opted instead for a few favourites: the sausage & onion pizza and the pasta amatriciana. Excellent as usual.

Great, reasonably-priced food. Service was slow, but this was due to the busyness of the restaurant and not so much the fault of the servers. Our server was very friendly and knowledgeable; he was just stretched too thinly by having to look after too many tables

  • Good Food, Not Great for Romance

    Dined on 2/14/2014
La Madia had great food - I strongly recommend the pizza and the buffalo mozzarella bruschetta. BUT the tables are SO close together you get no privacy. It was Valentines Day and there was a table of 16 parents and 2 year olds. NOT romantic but also not their problem. It just shows that it's not a "fine dining" restaurant like I would have imagined. Good food though - probably more for lunch rather than a romantic meal.

This is absolutely our favorite place for pizza (as we love thin crust). We have told so many friends about this restaurant over the years and it never disappoints. The ambience is slightly more elegant than a normal pizzeria appealing to people of all ages. On any given evening you might find several families; singles and couples; small groups for a bachelorette party; business associates - and somehow it all works. This restaurant makes our top five in the near north area of Chicago. Great wine flights and pasta dishes too!

Our waiter was very annoying and a bit strange. He didn't give us enough space to enjoy our meal and was giving really strange suggestions and tidbits along the way. Our spinach and cheese fondu appetizer was the best part of the meal. The Italian lettuces salad was alright. Our param pizza was a disappointment. The prosciutto was just ok and the pizza wasn't very flavorful.

I've been to La Madia many times but was a bit disappointed with the service this time. We had a 9pm reservation but weren't seated till almost 930pm as the party before us simply wouldn't leave. Instead of telling us to wait at the bar, La Madia should have told the lingering party to move to the bar since their meal was finished and paid up. We received no apology or comp for the half hour delay, and our waiter didn't even ask if we wanted dessert. He just brought the check over after our pizza and we felt rushed out, even after having to accommodate their delay.

Anything here that involves cheese is an excellent bet, we started at our server's recommendation with the Spinach & Taleggio Fondue which comes with a huge piece of freshly baked pita-style bread, and then had the Lamb Sausage Pizza for two. Both were outstanding, but weirdly the pizza came moments after the appetizer, so it was hard to choose which one to eat and I think the pizza got slightly cold in the process.

It's ok, high-energy, lots of pizza, but it tends to be greasy and heavy. One pizza in enough (and more) for 2, so if you order pizza plan to share. Nothing outstanding. Desserts ok.

Staying in Chicago for a few days after Christmas, we asked at our hotel about pizza. They recommended a well-known name for big thick stuff pizza but when we called, there was a 2-hour wait. So we instead walked two blocks to La Madia and we are glad we did! The pizza was thin crust and delicious. We had the house made fennel sausage and onion - super! The salad and spinach fondue appetizers were great! The drinks and service were up to par also. Overall a good experience!!

Went here as a group of 4 as a last minute decision because we could make a reservation. Between teh 4 of us, we ordered 2 salads and 3 pizzas to split. The pizzas were an ok size... they were a bit smaller than I thought they would be for the price. We enjoyed the meal but spent more money than we anticipated we would. May go there again if someone else wanted to, but I didn't think teh food was spectacular.

With the excellent advice of our server, we ordered the globe artichoke appetizer, a salad and a pizza to share and the chocolate polenta cake. Each item was beautifully prepared and delicious. The place was a little bit loud on a Saturday night but not uncomfortably so and it created a vibrant and lively setting.

I recommended La Madia for a girls night out. I'd been many time before and always had a good experience. I was not disappointed. Everyone loved the food and the atmosphere. The risotto and the mushroom brochette were delicious. And the best part - it was very reasonable. We had 2 bottles of wine, appetizers, pizza & risotto and it was only $43 each (including tip). Everything was great from beginning to end. Knowledgeable bartender knew her wines, our server was attentive, but not overbearing and the food!! Pizza fondue, mushroom/goat cheese bruchetta, arugula salad and the pizzas were all great. The dessert was a warm polenta chocolate cake with vanilla bean ice cream. All items were very reasonable in price. Hate to give it such a great review because the word might get out about this little gem.

4 of us had dinner last Friday night. 2 pizzas, 1 risotto, 1 salad. Food was very good, but our server was very slow. Although the restaurant was busy, it seemed as though he had no idea what he was doing. It took 3 requests for him to get another beer; he never brought the bread that we asked for; and although we asked for an extra fork, it never showed up. Better training would definitely help because good food alone does not keep people coming back

The pesto/arugula pizza special was very good. I hope they keep that on the "special" menu for some time. Three of us split that pizza and a second one. There were no leftovers from the pesto/arugula. We shared a reasonably good bottle of red with dinner then the waitress suggested a Malbec with the chocolate dessert. It was a sweet Malbec that was close to the taste of a port and was a nice finish to a great night with friends.

La Madia always offers great food and an extensive wine list. Would have given a higher service rating - waiter was excellent - but had to wait awhile for reservation, seemed even longer because it was a late night reservation. (Actually had to reach back out to hostess as they appeared to forget we were waiting in the bar.....) Life is busy and so are very good restaurants, so this wouldn't deter me from continuing to keep La Madia on my short list of great River North eateries.
