I've better meals in my college cafeteria than here....and for a fifth of the price. Had a blt with one piece of bacon and a salad which they screwed up twice. Basically paying to sit outside on newberry street. Don't go expecting anything special at all

I liked the "cafeteria" look of this restaurant. The ambience in the outdoor cafe with live music and lighting was romantic. The inside was inviting but lack the same ambience of the outdoor cafe. The food was simple but a little pricey.

Great food, great service that got us in and out in an hour---perfect for a workday lunch. We sat outside. Only problem was that the table (which was small) was very loose on the stand. Sounds like a minor problem but we had to hold the tabletop with one hand while we ate. I had the hanger steak (yummy) but hard to cut with one hand. By the time our food arrived and we realized the problem all of the outdoor tables were taken. We could have moved inside but it was the first nice day in a while and we really wanted to sit outside. We mentioned it to the waitress. Hopefully, she'll mention it to the manager and the problem will be fixed.

I ate brunch at Cafeteria this past Sunday and had a great experience! I sat on the patio and had a great view of Newbury street - perfect for people watching! The food was amazing (I had the frittata and fresh fruit & yogurt). I mentioned that I was on a diet and my waitress Chloe couldn't have been more helpful explaining the menu to me and recommending dishes. Totally going to recommend Cafeteria to all of my friends!

  • Solid Food, Weak Wait Staff
    OpenTable Diner Since 2012
    Dined on 7/5/2013
Overall, the food was solid. We went with our kids, and we shared a caesar salad, mac and cheese, tomato soup, pasta bolognese, and pizza quattro formaggi. The food was tasty, and I had a strawberry lemonade that was fantastic. We ate outside on a warm summer night. Unfortunately, the wait staff was lower caliber than the food. Our waitress insisted on taking our order without writing it down and (of course) forgot our pasta. When we asked her about it, she blamed the kitchen, but I saw her add it to the order via the register because she'd forgotten it. Then, another waiter tripped and dropped an empty beer bottle into a customer's open shopping bag. He mustered a weak apology. I hope nothing in the shopping bag was ruined by excess beer!

Outdoor seating is first come first serve, and full when we arrived at 5 PM on a Wed. evening before Sox game. No problem since it was hot out and indoors was air conditioned. Pretty empty inside, and did not fill up much when we left at 6 PM. Food was OUTSTANDING, well prepared, and HOT! Servers were good, but looked to us that they spent too much time chatting each other up instead of checking on customers inside. Son had to wait for water 15 minutes after meals arrived. Outside looked bustling, and servers were constantly in and out. We could observe from our basement seats. Notice that one server rolled her eyes a couple of times when taking order outside for another couple. Not sure why we could not sit in nicer part upstairs?

As other reviewers have said (and I ignored) it is extremely noisy in here, especially when seated next to already tipsy, shrill girls. The food was pretty good, even though I got the wrong salad (greek instead of beet, the waitress couldn't hear in there either but she did offer to change it) Outside would be much better but very difficult to get.

made reservations for 3 after I saw it listed on a website for dog friendly places. I noted I was bringing a dog so need table by the fence. I got a call confirming my reservation. I said I was unsure b/c it had been raining, & I'd cancel if i couldnt bring my dog. The woman was understanding, indicated she saw my note about the dog, and hoped that we could come. When I arrived w/my dog, I was told that only tables of 2 was by the fence and it'd be a fire safety hazard to 1) add a seat or b) combine 2 tables. If the gasline under the tables blew up, we'd be a safety hazard. I was expected to chain my dog to the fence, and take a table somewhere in the middle of the patio but its okay b/c the hostess was working & could keep a eye on my dog.

good food, nice atmosphere and service, but some things on the menu were a little over priced (particular greek salad for 14 and if you want anything in it to actually give it substance its another 5 = $19 salad which is pretty pricy). overall good restaurant and would go back again!

The staff was nice and the service ok. The food was not very good. Many things on the menu sound great, but were lacking in execution. I had a burger with a fried egg and both burger and egg were overcooked. I also had the beet salad- the portion was generous but it was boring and mediocre. The meatball appetizer also lacked pizzazz. Maybe the cook was having an off night, but it was underwhelming enough that I will not return.

Everything about our meal at Cafeteria Boston was terrific! The sangria was perfect and not-too-sweet on a HOT evening, our server answered all of our questions easily and made some suggestions. The black bean burger (house-made) was one of the best I have ever had (and I have had MANY) and my husband's turkey burger was devoured in about two minutes. The chopped apple salad was great (minus the shrimp for the vegetarians) - fresh, unusual, tasty. Mac & cheese was bubbling hot, obviously made in-house, with large pieces of sweet carrots and peas alongside. If I lived in Boston, I would be a regular customer!

Our waitress had to be asked things multiple times to get them, like salt and pepper for eggs. The bus boys brought things quicker or going to get our own sugar from other tables worked too! The food was good though. Mixed green salad with salmon was good, parmasean fries also a favorite. Beet salad is enourmous unless a few people sharing go with the small size. All egg dishes were what you'd expect

Service was good, food was tasty..I had the mussels and my kids had burger. My husband had pizza, which was cold when it arrived but still tasty. The real bummer was that the music was literally so loud that the waitress could not even hear our order. Several people moved tables to be away from the speakers. We requested that the music be turned down and our server said she would ask, but it never was. I like 80's music as much as the next guy but when you can't even have a conversation with your table because the music volume, it kind of puts a damper on the whole dining experience.

The outdoor seating was lovely on a beautiful Spring Sunday, but they seemed understaffed and the service was poor. But worse than the service was the food! Everything was great, except the service. Our waitress seemed to be running back and forth from first to second floor. We had to ask for water several times We had to ask for salt and pepper. No one checked in with us during the meal. There was really no dedicated server for this level, only the first floor people running up every once in a while to check. Food was good; prices fair for portion size. Pleasant atmosphere except we were sitting under a speaker and it was a bit loud. As the outdoor (downstairs) season is now upon us, management needs to address the two-level service balance.

This has become one of my favorite restaurants over the years. We live around the corner and frequently eat at Cafeteria. Its great to have such a wonderful, reliable restaurant within a few minutes walking distance. Its become our "go-to" spot. Great drinks (like the Time Out), great food with nice options for lighter or heavier fare (many soup, sandwich (curried chicken salad), salad options with a good selection of real dinners too). AND its great for brunch....their truffle scrambled eggs are fantastic. They recently redid the bar upstairs, which I'm so glad they did. The 2nd floor now has a great ambiance to go with its great view. Great spot that won't break the bank!

Came in on a Sunday night when out in the Back Bay - don't be confused like us, but the address is 279a Newberry Street - meaning it is across the street from 279 Newberry, which is an Indian restaurant. When we called to get directions because we couldn't find it, they didn't seem to know there was an Indian restaurant across the street with nearly the same building number. The prices are semi-affordable for Boston, and the food style is upscale comfort food. The food was good - tried the lamb burger and the Tuna Melt. Our only issue is that they didn't have enough servers working - so after she dropped the check off, she never came back to pick it up, so we ended up bringing it to the bar, and the semi-surly manager rang it up.

Great food, good crowd, amazing servers. Cafeteria Boston was a great find. We were a little crunch for time, and the server was super helpful in getting us out with time to spare. We started with the sparkling sangria, which was absolutely delightful, and then I had the BBQ burger, and my girlfriend had the taco salad. Both were amazing, and the taco salad was enormous. The noise level is definitely energetic, but not oppressive. The location is also fantastic, right on Newbury st. I would definitely return again.
