A word from Toloache-Midtown
Welcome to Toloache (pronounced toh-lo-AH-tchay), chef-owner Julian Medina’s contemporary Mexican bistro located in the heart of the Theater District. Toloache is named after a flowering plant famed in Mexico for its use in love potions. We hope that when you dine with us you too will fall under the spell of chef Medina’s creative cooking, which incorporates seasonal and natural ingredients and more than a dozen types of chilies. Our festive, two-story space features a guacamole and ceviche bar, a wood-burning oven, and an exceptional tequila list, along with elegant decorative elements imported from Mexico. We looking forward to seeing you soon.

Air conditioning upstairs (above the kitchen) did not work very well. It was quite hot (& others at tables near us agreed). We asked nicely, and were told that they would try to do something, but we never saw anyone try to adjust them. Other than that, we had the best margaritas in ages. Fantastic waitress who steered us to great food and drink with her recommendations. We made her pick and choose a lot for us, and we loved all of it. We went for a birthday, and she brought a great dessert tequila to sample that I would never have thought of. Loved it. Will def go back, but will refuse to sit upstairs again unless they do better to run those a/c units we all saw but didn't feel.

Even though the service was good our waiter was a bit annoying. He was more amusing to himself than he was to us. Other than that the service was good. The food was good and very filling. I thought I had a big appetite when I went into the restaurant. But I left with a very cute doggie bag with half of my entree. Guess I shouldn't have had the 'queso fundido' as an appetizer!

Though the food is excellent, the portions are VERY small. My guest and I both ordered the special tacos (he soft shell crab, me lobster) and were given two tiny tortillas with about two tbsps of filling. There needed to be at least one more taco, or they should have been full-sized tortillas. No one wants to leave a mexican restaurant (even a nouveau mexican bistor) anything but pleasantly full and we were still hungry after the guac trio, tacos and dessert.

The restaurant was closed by order of the New York City Board of Health. It would have been nice if Open Table had known and alerted the customer. It was very embarassing to have arrived there 10 minutes before my reservation and to have to had frantically emailed my guest to meet me somewhere else.

Excellent experience, head and shoulders above the average mexican restaurant with very interesting and delicious menu items. For starters we tried the three guacamoles - large portions of each arrived with a basket of warm corn chips- and the mixed seafood ceviche which was enormously flavorful and loaded with large shrimp. By the time our main courses (the shrimp and the skirt steak) arrived, we were nearly full, but managed to enjoy every last morsel. All terrific. Our server was delightful and we look forward to returning and trying more of the unusual dishes. A great value, and if you like tequila, they have an amazing selection. Only negative was music was a bit too loud.

I've eaten at Toloache 3 times. The portions may seem small to some people, but the high quality ingredients are rich, flavorful and very satisfying. All of the dishes I've tasted were very good: ceviche, tacos, quesadilla, chili relleno, avacado fries The crepe dessert is divine. The special cocktails are delicious...I've tried 4 of them...but they are a bit pricey. So on my 3rd visit I ordered beer instead.

We've been to Toloache multiple times and have always had excellent service. While our server this time was attentive, he was a bit condescending when speaking with our table. However, I would not let this deter anyone from going, because the food was fantastic, as always! And again, on all previous dining occasions, our service has been up to par, too.

The food quality was great, but the portions were very small, especially the quesadillas. We were shocked when it came out and it was so tiny for $13. Also, the waitstaff kept trying to clear our plates before we were finished, through all 3 courses, including our drinks! It sometimes felt that we were being rushed out of there. But, other than that, the food tasted great...

Hi - I went to this restaurant for Mother's Day before a show. It was very good - the food was delicious and the service was good. It was not crowded at all so I am not sure how busy it would get if there was a large crowd there. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone looking to dine in Midtown before a show or otherwise.

    OpenTable Diner Since 2006
    Dined on 5/9/2008
Toloache offered a refreshing change from the typical Mexican/Tex Mex restaurants. For example, Toloache has an interesting basil cucumber margarita, tasty soft tacos with a variety of fish like tilapia and shrimp, veggie offerings like mushroom tacos, artichokes, stuffed peppers, cheese fondue and soups, and main courses like roasted pig. The cactus fries and avocado fries were terrific. Overall, Toloache used fresh ingredients in a creative way. While the portions were on the small side, the appetizers/sides/gauc sampler could be eaten tapas-style for a fun group experience that is still reasonably priced. And, in the heart of the theater district, you can't beat the location.

Generally, Toloache has better than average Mexican fare. The staff was extremely friendly and attentive, but so much so that there was an extremely rushed aura to teh meal. Our courses were served way too quickly for a fine dining experience -- we hardly finished one course before the other course was being served. Overall experience is good but far from Rosa Mexicana, Dos Caminos or Cafe Frida which are great in the Mexican space.

Very diverse menu with large selection. We had the Prix Fixe for $69 that included 3 types of Margheritas, 3 tyes of Guacamole, an excellent tuna & watermelon Cerviche, very good main course and a great dessert. Next time we'll probably order off the menu to cut down on the amount of food. Service was very good and the meal was nicely paced. Staff constantly removed empty glasses and bowls as the appetizer courses were completed. Just a bit on the noisy side but that won't deter us from going back again.
