A word from The Source
The Source is the first fine dining restaurant in the nation’s capital headlined by Master Chef Wolfgang Puck. Designed by EDG, the three-level restaurant is the signature dining experience at the Newseum, an interactive museum of news. The Source offers two distinct dining experiences as well as a private room located on the lower level that seats up to 40 guests. The ground floor bar and lounge where guests enter offers approachable dining in a casual setting and features a traditional Japanese Izakaya menu offering sushi, sashimi, noodle dishes and authentic "Robata" grilled dishes. Upstairs, guests can enjoy a menu that features Puck’s modern take on Asian cuisine. The Source is the recipient of many awards and accolades including #3 ranking on Washingtonian Magazine's "Top 100 Restaurants" list, "2008 New Restaurant of the Year" Award and "2008 Restaurant of the Year" from DC Magazine plus has received three stars from Washington Post food critic Tom Sietsema.

  • We could hear the conversations

We could hear the conversations from both tables adjacent to us, which was very distracting. Everything else in terms of ambience was great. None of the servers or wine specialist had what I'd say an enthusiasm over the food or wine list, so asking for recommendations was unreliable. The lamb that I ordered was cooked Pittsburgh medium rare. Between the charred flavor, the asian fused flavors and the arugula that came with it, I couldn't find the flavor of the lamb (the only reason I order lamb), which was mostly fat and left me hungry even after desert. My GF's sea bass was over cooked which left only half of what could have been a great meal left to be eaten. But, I'll say the table next to us ordered the same and it looked great.

  • Our experience at the Source

Our experience at the Source overall was very good. Our dinner was excellent and the atmosphere was pleasant. The downstairs was lively and hip with an outstanding cocktail selection. The waiter could have been a bit friendlier in that he seemed to have a tone in his voice when my wife’s order was not right. Otherwise, I definitely would recommend the Source to our friends.

  • Wolfgang Puck is the new star
    OpenTable Diner Since 2006
    Dined on 3/25/2008
Wolfgang Puck is the new star in town and we went with a "curious excitement". We were seated in a prime location near the entryway (Table 13) to watch the scene and enjoy the mastery of Puck's menu. We were not let down. Not only was the food (and wine) fantastic and presented beautifully, but the general manager (Jennifer), sommelier (Page), and waiter (Dmitry) all made us feel very welcome. In fact, we were celebrating an anniversary dinner and mentioned it during a conversation with Jennifer, who then proceeded to ensure our desserts were presented with an "over the top" flair. A wonderful end to a wonderful evening. We promised to return--and we will!

Some dishes are outstanding. The menu doesn't change--this was my third visit in two months, and I saw the same dishes. Waiters and hostesses range from self-involved to overly familiar.

  • Overall, somewhat disappointing

Overall, somewhat disappointing and overpriced. Many waiters bustling around, often appearing to be lost or unable to find the appropriate table to deliver food. Prawn entree consisted of extremely small shrimp in a slightly bitter-tasting sauce. Salmon entree was not served hot. Waiter appeared to ask how everything was before we had even taken the first bite and never appeared again until we were finished. We would probably not return.

They were out of their pork dish at lunch time which seemed surprising. The chicken was good but not that unusual. The rice was great.

BIG PROBLEM - THEY HAD NO RECORD OF MY OPENTABLE RESERVATION. When we checked in for dinner they indicated no reservation on file when I was certain it was made on Opentable. They were kind enough to accomodate but not without a wait and some stress. This survey confirms I actually had the reservation.

Great experience. Everything we ate was delicious and perfectly prepared. If anything, the wait staff and hostesses were too attentive -- they could have let us alone a bit more, but then again, we never had to ask to get our water refilled all evening. Nice place.

I, and the other members of my party thoroughly enjoyed our lunch experience. My three comments: (1) I cannot eat seafood and only wish you had more items on the menu that were not seafood dishes, (2) We took a look at the dinner menu and thought it was just a tad bit too pricey, and (3) The link to the restaurant's menu that was included in my open table confirmation reflected that the price fixe menu for lunch was $30. Yet when the waitress handed us the menu that day, the menu reflected that the price fixe was $35.

The food was, as usual, very good. We thought that the service had substantially declined from our last visit a couple of months ago. The server first assigned to our table seemed to be quite inexperienced and not well supervised by the more senior staff. Service improved after we brought the issue to the captain's attention.

I had a great experience at The Source. Unlike a lot of DC restaurants that have a lot of hype but not much substance, the evening left me with a feeling that the $100 (!) per person my friend and I spent had been worth it. The service was very impressive- extremely attentive without being overly solicitous. The food was also very good—larger portion sizes than one expects at "trendy" restaurants. The one gripe I have about the food—and this was mentioned in the Washington Post review—is that it's too sweet. It was hard finding a dish without a sugary sauce or dressing.
