A word from Solbar - Solage Calistoga
Solbar, our casual yet sophisticated restaurant, is part of Solage Calistoga, Napa Valley’s most innovative resort and spa. Relax in the bar with a custom cocktail and a panoramic view of the Palisades Mountains or sit on the patio to enjoy a local wine and take in the scene at our 130-foot swimming pool.

In the Solbar kitchen, we are pleased to offer you a choice of lighter dishes to enjoy guilt-free as well as more decadent ones in which you can truly indulge. We go to great lengths to involve local producers whenever possible and to let the California seasons dictate our menu.

The service was exceptional. The food was quite good with one exception, the fried pickles. I love fried pickles and was disappointed that they were more batter than pickle. The Cuban Sandwich was fabulous as well as enormous. My companion loved the seared tuna sandwich and we both enjoyed the flatbread with 3 sauces very much.

Very nice, it was my 4th time there, and I am finding it a nice spot to take my clients--I enjoy the variety on the menu, it's nice and casual, and it's got a bit of the uniquity that the Napa Valley needs...it seems like every menu in the NV is the same so it's a nice choice to have. Thank you, I'll be back.

  • 7:00 PM Diner on Saturday.
    OpenTable Diner Since 2008
    Dined on 9/27/2008
7:00 PM Diner on Saturday. Pleasant outdoor dining atmosphere, though some regulars felt it was their prerogative to be loud and obnoxious (big spenders, no doubt, judging by the fawning sommelier and manager). Food was competently executed, but uninspired. Some missteps, such as a too-salty sauce with the steak (and I like salty), an over-lemony garlic aioli that came off tasting like lemon creme, and a baked alaska that was too marshmallowy with a passionfruit sorbet at its center that was way too tangy and just did not work. Service was erratic. Our primary waiter was pleasant and attentive, but water refills had long waits between. A side dish came when we'd just finished the main course. Would not return.

  • My fourth trip to Solbar.
    OpenTable Diner Since 2006
    Dined on 9/10/2008
My fourth trip to Solbar. The food, as usual, was wonderful. I had the Pesto Gnocchi which was light in texture and delicious followed by the Grouper which was fresh and well seasoned. My companion had the Spareribs which he enjoyed. He ordered a glass of white wine to start and when his meal came, the server suggested the Syrah and he followed her advice. When I paid the bill it was $19 for the one glass. I tipped 15% instead of 20% because I think she should have advised that the cost was double that of his first glass of wine. The previous trip with a different companion, the waiter pushed the salad so much (which we didn't want or order) that we commented on the lack of subtley afterwards. Great food & atmosphere, watch the hard sell.

Four of us joined together at Solbar. What an excellent time we had. The service was amazing. Every need was met. There was never a water glass left empty. The waiter folded my napkin for me when I was in the ladies' room. The menu is split in two. The left side contains healthier choices (fish, vegetables, etc.) while the right side contains the items with more calories or fat (BLT, Burger, steak). It was so nice to have that streamlined. The setting is beautiful, inside and out. A true gem!

Great for outdoor dining. Food was good, maybe a little overpriced for the portions but expected for a top resort in wine country. However, I only gave 2 stars for service. I was a lone diner so it was easy to miss me but we did make eye contact. A group of 4 came in front of me. As they were seated, a group of 3 came behind me. The hostess accidentally ignored me and seated them first. I was a bit peeved. When I finally sat down she asked if I wanted a drink menu and I said yes. My server took a while to come to me (another annoyance) and I asked her for my drink menu which she gave. The original drink menu promised to me (after I had already ordered) came 10 minutes later. As a corporate event manager, I do look at these.

Once again, the food was great and the service so-so. The carrot soup needed salt and pepper but was great once seasoned. The mushroom pizza was spectacular. The shrimp in lettuce cups is always great. Flatbread with dips makes a great share plate. And my friend loved her chicken salad. But getting water refilled was a chore. Most of the time I poured our wine as the waiter was nowhere in sight. Getting coffee was not easy either. We keep going back in hopes that next time the service will be as good as the food.

    OpenTable Diner Since 2008

Solbar seems like it is on the right track but is very new and has things to work on. We were there in the early evening on a very hot day (not unusual for Calistoga) and they had a very bad problem with flies in the restaurant. They were aware of it and very apologetic but it was still very distracting. The restaurant and bar were simple and beautiful. The food was light and healthy and very tasty. Tried the dungeness crab salad with various melons, the lettuce wraps, the seared yellowfin and the soft shell crab. The lettuce wraps were unremarkable but the rest was very good. My favorite was the flat bread with three different spreads -- very tasty!

    OpenTable Diner Since 2007
    Dined on 6/22/2008
Solbar actually could be great. Their menu is quite interesting and well prepared: they have a good ambiance and attractive outside dining. But they have not dealt with a problem that they had from the start -- a poorly run dining room, staff not well trained or responsive and slow service. I put this down to management since the quality of the leadership is what determines the attitude and behavior of the staff. Our waiter was both slow and surly -- as if it were something of an imposition to serve us. He improved when someone he knew joined our table. But overall I was not impressed. I will continue to go to Solbar because if they do improve, they could be first rate.

Loved the scene; beautiful property. Timothy, our server, was knowledgeable and very accomodating. One suggestion: Although the ahi tuna wrap was beautifully presented, it was very difficult to eat, so we just unwrapped it. Ahi was perfect. The lahvosh was too tough to cut. Very fresh flavors, the delta asparagus was lovely indeed. All the appetizers were just fabulous. Desserts: presentation and taste perfect too.

Had two meals at the Solbar while staying at Solage. The first was a dreamy dinner on the patio-delicious sand dabs on fava beans! The service, while young and slightly over-anxious, was very polite, and the ambiance was lovely. The second meal was lunch on 15 May. I sensed while eating the seared tuna wrap that the fish was off since it was slightly smelly and mealy. My suspicions were confirmed when I suffered one of the most horrendous bouts of food poisoning I have ever endured thereafter. The cook MUST have noticed the tuna was spoiled (the smell and texture were obvious), and for a seared piece of fish to be served in that way is completely unacceptable. Otherwise, I would recommend this restaurant.

The food was fantastic - we really enjoyed each of the dishes, especially the sliders! The service was a bit odd. Our waiter did not know what one of the side dishes was, and when we first sat down we heard about specials from one waiter, and ordered our bottled water. Then, another waiter came up and told us about the specials and asked if we wanted water. Then, tap water arrived on the table. Hmmm... The atmosphere was very loud, and open, and almost a bit intimidating. This is definitely an upscale locale, and the food reflects that, but the service could increase a notch on the professionalism scale.
