A word from Marvin
Located in the Shaw area of D.C., Marvin combines Belgian cuisine and American comfort food with soul-inspired dishes like shrimp and grits, and is named in homage to Marvin Gaye; a huge mural of Marvin is painted on a main dining room wall. The restaurant decor gives some of the feel of a traditional local place, with a cool vibe as you enter the upstairs lounge.

A really great experience. I liked the ambiance, decor, food, and service. All would warrant another trip. It was quite loud, though.

I had a reservation for Tues at 7, and at 5 I found out that I needed to move the reservation to Wed. I called Marvin and got vm telling me to leave a messaage. However, the voice mail box was full, so I could not leave a message. I called back at 5:30, when the resteraunt should have been open. No answer. Called again at 5:35, 5:40, 5:50 and 6:00. I didn't get through until 7, when I was chided for not keeping my reservation. The next night we got there a little early, checked in with the hostess, and had a drink at the bar. When we finished our drinks the hostess told us she'd given our table away because we were not there. When I said I'd checked in, she said it must have been with someone else, but it was in fact with her.

I have 3 big problems that are having me think twice about frequenting Marvin: (1) the hostess needs a serious attitude adjustment. I felt like we were bothering her to let her know we were there for our reservation. (2) The bar service was awful. It wasn't even that crowded, and I must have waited 15 minutes to even get looked at. I'm literally trying to give you my money. It shouldn't be that hard and is really annoying. (3) at dinner, the wine by the glass options are lacking given how much wine is available ont he list. Open it up a little!

I was pleasantly surprised by the Belgian fare and Marvin Gaye in Europe theme. They haven't posted a menu on the website so I didn't know that in advance. My experience was mostly positive...the mussels and frites were fantastic! I was initially concerned about their vegetarian options so I called to make sure they had several to choices. They told me over the phone that they did but in fact the server told us they were "sold out" of just about all the items they'd originally promised over the phone or that was advertised on the menu in our hands. That said, our server did go back and find a yummy selection that wasn't on the menu, described it to us and my vegetarian dinner partner chose that entree. She said it was delicious!

Overall the resturant was OK, it appears to be more for the Gen X crowd I am a Baby Boomer. Need to add additional beverages to the menu. (Tea, Lemonade) They need to consider a different type of bread, it was hard to cutand break apart.

everything we (two adults and a 12 year old) tried was wonderful, reasonably priced, and service was not just polished, it was notably warm, friendly, fast, yet dignified. There's a sense of pride here, that radiates from kitchen to wait staff. With bare floors and tables, there is nothing to muffle the noise level, however, so the noise is unpleasantly loud, forcing all of us to raise our voices to be heard -- the raw throats detract a bit from the enjoyment of the really good -- and imaginatively presented -- food. We are (all too) aware that such buzz makes restaurants seem trendy -- but could there not be a 'quiet night', or even 'quiet hour', just as an experiment? Odds on, there would be a large, appreciative audience!

It was so loud that I had to shout louder than I ever have in a restaurant and all we wanted to do was leave. I had a sour throat for the rest of the night. I promise, I am not a complainer - this was extraordinary.

My margarita was not good. I was very disturbed that the restaurant did not have cocktail sauce or tartar sauce for the fish I ordered. nor did they have steak sauce for my husband's steak. There were fruit flies in his salad, and they didn't have vanilla ice cream to go with the apple pie, so i ended up not ordering dessert at all. I may come back in the future (and hopefully, things will have improved by then), but I won't be rushing to get back there.

Chicken and waffles was an amazing hit with our group! They need to empty their voice mail box so you can leave a message, and publish an email address so you can send a note. Also: Open Table did not allow me to modify my reservation once I made it. VERY frustrating all the way around.

The meal proceeded at a steady pace - not too fast, not too slow. We finished desert, they dropped the bill, we paid and the waitress picked up the check. Less than five minutes later, she came to our table and, somewhat shyly, said, "would you mind going upstairs to the lounge?" I looked around and saw only a couple of empty tables. I asked if they needed our table. The waitress said that a two top was waiting and they didn't have any tables to give them. She assured us that the lounge was a "great place." So we left. No, we didn't go to the lounge. This has never happened to me. It was tacky and humiliating. Do not recommend.

The menu is outstanding; however, the noise level in the dining room diminishes the enjoyment of what should be an outstanding dining experience. On our last visit (fourth), even though we arrived at 6:00 p.m. and asked for a quiet table away from the bar, the group that we were seated next to turned out to the a very loud threesome. Foodwise, the braised pork was dry this trip and the tea selection was all but nonexistent. Unfortunately, we'll think twice before we go again.

Marvin's ambience is great. The atmosphere definitely creates the experience. Mussel dishes are great too. But the steak fritte I had was lousy--a supermarket style piece of meat drenched in sauce. Also, a fish dish I had once before was mediocre and quiet small. I think there should be more consistency with the entree dishes.

My shrimp on grits appetizer was outstanding; the chicken and waffles didn't really impress me, it just seemed like more of a novelty on the menu. I'd definitely go back, though, to try more dishes. Service was fantastic, and I loved to hip decor.
