A word from Steamworks Gastown
Since we first opened in 1995, Steamworks has been a favourite of Vancouver locals and visitors alike. Whether you're joining us for lunch, a drink after work, or a group dinner with friends and colleagues, we're honoured to have you with us.

Steamworks gets its name from the famous Gastown steam line that runs through our premises. Our onsite brewery uses steam to fire its kettles. The instant heat of steam allows for greater brewing finesse, and most importantly great tasting beer. Whether you're in the mood for a thirst quenching Lions Gate® lager, or a full bodied HeriocaTM Oatmeal Stout, we've got a beer to please your palate.

Food was really good. When celebrating special occasions would be helpful if the restaurant can try to accommodate special requests, no effort was made which was really disappointing.

Other than the fact that my clothes smelled of fried food for two days, it seemed like a great brewpub. I think the smell may have been a result of our group sitting downstairs not far from the open kitchen, but perhaps a better exhaust system would help. I did not notice the odors when we were there, but I sure did when I got home!

  • Always a favourite, I met
    OpenTable Diner Since 2011

Always a favourite, I met a friend at Steamworks recently for a short visit and dinner after work. It was one of our sunny evenings of late and so we sat on the patio (tucked in near the building). The game was on and so it was busy for a Monday night. Our plate and side orders were mixed up when they arrived, but easily fixed. My companion had a steamworks burger, and I must admit it looked good, and yam fries. The fries would not have enticed me as they were dry and cold. I had a lamb burger and house salad which was delicious. The lamb was cooked to perfection and very juicy, the salad full of mixed greens and sweet surprises topped with feta and a light vinaigrette. Overall once again a good experience.

We had a very nice lunch here. Our server was very knowledgeable and quick to replace drinks and clear finished plates. We sat downstairs which i thought was a very groovy little area...although it is parking lot out the window there is still a great view of mountains and the port. All in all i would go back here anytime and recommend to friends.

I understand that all requests cannot bet met, but showing up with dates after making a reservation and specifically requesting a window seat, and there being several open tables pissed me off. Your staff at the door in a very clear manner sized up my party, noted that we dress rather shabbily (we are in bands, rock n roll) and put us in a corner. The message was clear: "You do not look like the sort of patrons to which we are accustomed". I will not be going back, and now you will lose business, as I constantly have guests in town, often guests that perform at large venues on Granville St. I had been searching for a place to bring people who enjoy beer, and the search continues. Poor work.

I LOVED my experience at Steamworks. I was there for my 20th Birthday party with a few friends, and the experience couldn't have been better. The food was fast and hot, the drinks were unique and put together perfectly. Our servers were incredibly helpful and went completely out of their way to make my night perfect. Definitely recommending to as many people as possible, and I will be back very soon

We really LOVED this restaurant. The food and service were excellent on a very busy Saturday evening. While it doesn't look like much from the outside, it is a true gem on the inside. My only complaint is that we were seated near the door and as people arrived, before they were seated, they more or less "invaded" our dining space.

The food was excellent, the service prompt and helpful. However, we were there with young children, and it wasn't as kid-friendly as some other places. It's a small location (which would have been OK if I hadn't been waiting for someone to return from the very distant washrooms), but more than made up for by all the friendly staff.

  • Did not satisfy table request

Asked for large table for 3 for business lunch. I also asked for a view. I wanted space as it was lunch with an associate I hadn't met. I got the view but not the space. Tough to sit a table for 3. On a previous occassion I sat next to the window view tables where they can group tables together. I saw a table near the stairs and thought to myself, "I never want to sit there". Reason: Too close to the stairs. All wait staff walks by it and it's a small table with no comfortable spot for the 3rd person, let alone a fourth. Well.... that's the table I got for my business lunch! The least spacious, elbow to elbow table available. I would have sacrificed view for size and privacy. Did they not read my request? Was I not clear? Food? Excellent.

Four of us went on Saturday night at 8pm. Our table was ready when we arrived and we were seated right away. The only issue with our table was that it was right next to the door so we constantly had a cold draft. Our server was fantastic! She knew when we needed something and was very pleasant, helpful with menu descriptions, and funny. The restaurant is clean - that's a HUGE plus in my books! What we ordered and the rating based on pub-type food - 2 people had the butter chicken (7 out of ten), 1 had the gorgonzola pizza (9 out of 10), and 1 had the spaghetti & meatballs (5 out of ten). While the food we had this time wasn't the best, the location can't be beat - we all took transit to enjoy the night, and the service is excellent!

On a busy Tuesday night we were seated immediately and had our drink orders on the table within a few minutes. We were a group of 4 and were talking business and the server was skilled with her timing. I had the ribs with roast potatoes and it was very good. We didn't have to wait very long for anything even though the place was full. One thing, I asked for a window table but that didn't get through from the web based reservation. Also, we were seated at a table for two with 4 chairs around it and it became very crowded.

Food was delicious, we had a fantastic server. Only complaint would be we requested to sit at a great table to watch the canucks game. Called to confirmed the reso the day of and requested once again to sit in a great spot for the game and was assured that would be the case. We arrived 5 minutes early for our rerso and they had a table reserved for us tucked along a wall surrounded by other tables where the sightlines for the single tv in the room we obstructed by several heads. This TV was also on curling until a couple minutes after the canucks game had started. Food was really good, we shared dry ribs and calamari for appy, then had the butter chicken plate and cheese stuffed tortelini.

Very upset that our table was right in front of a big screen (older style tube) tv. Asked to have it turned off and the girl was borderline rude and denied. Being an older style tube the glare and humming from the tv pretty much ruined our dinner. Not to mention I had asked for a quiet table and I have never had to scream as much as I did to have a dinner conversation. Very loud and not an enjoyable experience. Very disappointing.

    OpenTable Diner Since 2009

This wasn't the first time I've been to Steamworks, but unfortunately, it was not a good experience. The food was so-so (the tiramisu is NOT one of the best in Vancouver as the menu states - way too much pure cocoa "dusted" on top, barely any taste of rum/espresso soaked into the ladyfingers, basically soggy cookies covered in a pudding-textured cream). Our server failed to noticed that I was not eating the dessert because every time she walked by, she didn't even look at our table. We must have sat there for a good 10 min waiting for her to notice us so finally I had to flag her down to tell her I was not enjoying the dessert. She took the dessert of the bill but we were still very disappointed in this particular experience.

I had been to Steamworks Gastown several times in the past for lunch and had been satisfied but never thrilled. For a dinner, I was disappointed in the grouchy waitress and the service. This was a birthday dinner, reservations were made far in advance with a notation of this being a birthday and I was really disappointed in the area we were sat for the dinner. If the waitress wasn't so rude and miserable looking, I may have overlooked the other issues I had, excessive noise, slow service, tight space, bad location in seating, however the overall deciding factor as to why I will likely never return or book another event at Steamworks is the waitress. She did not make this a pleasant evening.

I made a reservation at Steamworks Gastown for many reasons; close to Via Rail with time for return travel, short level walk from parking. Everyone in my party enjoyed their meal selection; fish & chips, ribs, pizza, and prawn linguine. Special commendation for availability of the Wheat free menu section. On arrival 'we' requested a section with less noise. I gave up the table with a view. I believe the section with children and directly on the dirty dish 'bus'return route should not have been accepted.

The night started off with great service, though once the food was served the waiter seemed to lose interest in our table. The steak was very much so not up to restaurant quality and the prawns were over cooked. The sause on the pasta dish tasted like it came from a can. It also seemed that every waiter and waitress that passed by our table walked into our chairs. I have been to this place many times for drinks and had a great time. Though the first time I choose to have a meal I was utterly dissapointed. I do not think I will be returning to this restaurant.
