I was excited about dining at tonic when I looked at the menu. We ordered the Coney Island tots for an appetizer and it was good. But nothing special. By the time our food came I was not as hungry. My salad was on a bed of arugula and there was way too much dressing and it was all very salty. The other item we ordered included the Mac and cheese which was good but everything else seemed to be very salty as well. I'd be willing to go back and give it a second try. Many items on the menu looked enticing

I have been pleasantly surprised at the quality and atmosphere at Tonic. Located in the heart of the George Washington University campus, Tonic is an excellent venue for all kinds of fun activities, including hanging out with friends, enjoying an excellent meal, choosing from a diverse selection of quality beers. I would take to Tonic anyone I want to impress with my knowledge of great places to go in DC. Keep up the great work, Tonic!

Tonic was great as usual -- this was probably my 25h or 30th meal there -- but I have noticed that the service is slower each time I go. It can take 10 minutes to have someone take a lunch order. My sense is they are understaffed at lunchtime. The servers clearly are working hard. Otherwise no complaints, the food is great and the location can't be beat.

Excellent service - highly recommend you make a reservation, though- -otherwise, the waits can be quite long. I used open table for the reservation, was quickly seated in a great spot with bookshelves and misc. take one / leave one books. It was amusing to browse a bit during dinner. The food was excellent as usual (I have been here multiple times for lunch; however, this was my first for diner). Started with house cocktails -- both hit the spot and were well made and quickly to our table. The pizza is fun and unique (arugula pesto with veggie toppings) and we also enjoyed their tots. Prompt, friendly service, highly recommend.

Great place to get a good burger or comfort food from your childhood. Got tator tots as an app. They came with a few different dipping sauces that were a pleasant surprise. I got a taco salad that wasn't filling enough unless your idea of filling up on just lettuce. My fiance got a burger which he enjoyed. Wouldn't mind coming again.

This was a last minute choice for the night before New Year's Eve dinner. Indeed a "gem" in the Foggy Bottom neighborhood. We were seated on the top floor immediately. Our server, Elena, was very attentive and most pleasant. My guest had fish tacos and I chose the "Tonic Burger", opting to replace the french fries with a Caesar Salad. Both dishes delicious. Need to return soon!

The last time we came here we had an outstanding time This visit was very different. We arrived at an off hour, 4:45, and the host seemed surprised to see us. It took him a few minutes to get our table ready, which turned out to be strange because we were the ONLY people in the upstairs dining area. My menu was missing a whole page, and my wife's was missing the specials insert I think our server was on a break, or at least wanted to be, because he seemed sleepy and disinterested. He was not very attentive (again, we were the only people in the room until just before we left.) The food was still good. We know this place is popular and that it can do much better. They need to learn to pay attention to off times as well as busy ones.

I've eaten here before and loved the food, so I felt confident ordering anything on the menu. Never again! The meatloaf was dry and hard. I would guess it had been reheated or nuked too many times. Despite this, it wasnt served particularly hot. The Brussels sprouts and mashed potatoes were ok. What did I enjoy most on previous visits? Yummy beef barley soup/stew that was so good I worked on duplicating it st home. I will come back, but will ask the server for a recommendation next time.

I've eaten lunch here for years, and it's always a great place for groups, since the menu is varied enough to accommodate most tastes, reasonably priced, and close to the office. I haven't eaten here in a couple of months so was surprised the food was not good. My steak salad was some bland steak (although cooked to an appropriate medium rare as ordered, I'll give them that), over a pile of arugula (w/no other greens, so just an overwhelming peppery flavor) covered in what looked and tasted like mayo. I thought maybe they were going for a blue cheese dressing but it was just gross mayo. The fried onions on top had the consistency of rubber-so weird for fried onions. Other dishes were equally bad. Not sure I'll go there again any time soon.

Being tourists in DC we were looking for a place to eat and we found Tonic a couple blocks from our hotel. There is a noisy bar on the 1st floor and a dining area on the 2nd floor which was quieter thank goodness. All 4 of us had a different meal and we were all very impressed as we expected "bar" food. I had very good crispy fish tacos, my wife's Mushroom Ravioli was Amazing and the others had the Dijon crusted Salmon and were also amazed at the quality of the food and the great tastes and all at a very reasonable price. They had a great beer selection and modestly priced as well.

This is a neighborhood landmark right in the middle of GW so very convenient and cute. A facade of an old pharmacy with a tower clock. The interior is open beam, brick, quaint and cute. The receptionist seemed bored and not welcoming, the wait staff dropped silverware and reached across our guest to deliver requested items rather than walking around to me side of the table. Overall the atmosphere location and ambience would entice me to go again.

Tonic is a trusty go-to lunch spot in Foggy Bottom when you're looking for something a little more formal than fast food. The food is a couple of notches better than bar food, but nothing to write home about. They do have something for everyone: soup, salads, sandwiches, burgers, nachos (my favorite), pizza. They have a full bar, which makes it convenient for happy hour, too.

A range of food options and very good quality. The service, in particular our server, was less than desirable. He was overwhelmed with his section of tables/booths, which seemed to contribute to him being slow to respond to our needs. He also presented very hurried and confused drink/food request. Most notable, he stomped back and forth the entire time which was disruptive to the ambience. The serve could benefit from additional training and a good pair of shoes. Other than that, a good place to dine.

We were just looking for some place we could go to that wasn't too far from the Kennedy Center, and this looked interesting (and had a reservation at the time we needed.) When we arrived the place was hopping - Friday happy hour - so it seemed that it might be a little loud for us, but they had outdoor seating available (it was warm on November 1!) And we alter found out that the upstairs seating was much quieter and nicer. The food was standard American fare, but very well done. They specialize in "tater tots" served with a vaiety of sauces, which was fun. Our server was very nice and knowledgeable and service was reasonably quick, though she went off shift in the middle of our meal so getting the check was a little tricky. We'll be back!

It has been quite a few years since I last dined here. The food was excellent as always, as was our waiter. What wasn't great was the fact that we had a reservation and we still had to wait a long time for a table and when we go the table it was a two top for a reservation for three. The response from the somewhat curt hostess was "we get a lot of reservations". Seems like the reservation process is a waste of both their and the diner's time. Maybe they should just go to first come, first serve and call ahead for large groups. Lot less frustration that way, at least on the part of the diner.

My husband and I went to dinner here based on the plethora of good reviews. Being a cheese lover I ordered the mac and cheese assuming that if a restaurant boasts mac and cheese on its appetizer and entree menus it would have to be good. I received a huge bowl of noddles swimming in a soupy sauce with a tiny pinch of cheese thrown to one side of the bowl. I exchanged the dish for the spring pasta which was only slightly better; after a few bites I called it a night. We ordered a side of tots because tots seem to be the theme. Nothing special, they taste like warmed up frozen tots. The spinach and artichoke dip was sour. Server seemed spacey, never checked on us, and never brought us water. The pumpkin ale ran out by 6:30pm. Not worth $67.

I went for lunch. I had the fish tacos. My coworker had their breaded chicken sandwich (forget the name). The fish tacos were far more breaded and crunchy than any I'd ever had. It was extremely bland as well. They covered it with a sweet type sauce which was pretty good. The tortilla was hard on the edges and my food was lukewarm when it was brought out. My coworker had the same impression about his meal. The decor was cool. I like the take a book, leave a book concept. The outdoor seating seems like it would be nice but it's a bit cool out these day. It's a decent experience but don't prepared to be wowed by the food. Maybe I should have gotten the taters.

We had a table on the shady patio on a beautiful day, so ambiance was a plus. Waitress was attentive, personable, and cute. The person that had a pizza didn't care for the sauce and talked longingly about the pies at other local shops. My pulled pork sandwich was very good and a good size. The tater tots were crispy but I couldn't get as excited about them as some other reviewers seem to be. I mean they're just potatoes (which you probably shouldn't be eating) and they're deep fried (which you definitely shouldn't be eating). It isn't super expensive but on the high end of a casual lunch in DC. $21 for a pulled pork sandwich, iced tea, tax and 20% tip. I'd go back but probably not suggest it before trying other places.

I read some good reviews about this place so I was excited to try it. It's a great location and the restaurant is very cute inside with nice outdoor seating. However, the food is mediocre at best. I can make frozen tator tots at home and there are far too many places in foggy bottom that serve amazing hamburgers to be serving mediocre burgers. The Mac and cheese is terrible - thin sauce, bland and not at all cheesy. This was some of the worst Mac and cheese I have ever tasted. The pretzel bread is more bread than pretzel but it is warm so that was appetizing at least - the mustard dipping sauce was far too thin - it was the consistency of salad dressing as opposed to pretzel dip. I left disappointed in the food but not the ambiance.
