Great space, designed by Washington restaurant designer Griz Dwight. Good energy. Interesting menu, with well prepared and interesting small plates and entrees. Notable dishes were crudo and gnocchi appetizers. Chicken and sablefish entrees. Desserts were also very good, especially the innovative goat cheesecake. Wine list outstanding and wine sevice superb, doen to the high end stemware, which was varietal specific. The sommelier, whose name I forget, was outstanding. I went for a business dinner and will definitely come back with my wife!

We love Proof for dinner, drinks, cheese and wine, but can't say lunch blew us away. I had the Tuna Salad, my friend the Lamb Burger...the food was fine, but nothing special. I'd asked the ahi be cooked SUPER rare, and the ends were a bit too well done...the lettuce was huge chunks of romaine - looked like it had been taken from the head and just slapped on a plate- not memorable at all. Bland. Will come back any night of the week for wine and cheese-love Proof at night, but won't be too quick to come back for lunch.

Of the four places we went out to eat at during our DC vacation, this was by far the best. We were thankful we went to this place on our last night because we were able to come back to Chicago with at least one great meal from DC under our belts. The server was very helpful with recommending the best items on the menu.

Proof was too expensive for what it offered. The wine list did not have a good range of prices and the food while nicely prepared was not worth a return visit. We tried Proof as a dining experience only. I would have been very disappointed had we gone there prior to or after an event at Verizon as while the decor had more of an informal feel the menu and wine list did not. We live in the area and dine out frequently. The prices may make Proof a special occasion kind of place for some but not for us.

  • Proof was a good restaurant

Proof was a good restaurant with an unusual menu and capable staff. Our dinners were imaginatively conceived and well-received by my partner and our guests. Chinatown is becoming what the West End was 20 years ago--a pre-event dining destination. The trendy events then were at the Kennedy Center or at the Warner. Now, they are at the Verizon Center. Note that diners pay for the location (...one block from Verizon). Though the West End was never a bargain, Proof needs to lower its prices by 10% to 15% for its quality to be in line with its cost. However, cost aside, I wouldn't hesitate to take clients to Proof.

Service was great! Food was very. very good. The gnocchi was out of this world. I recommend it to all. As well as the cheese. The wine list by the glass was very deep. One comment it would be great if they sold Oregon pinot by the glass. Proof has Oregon Pinot by the bottle onle. The blended cab and the port were great...

Really enjoyed my dinner experience at Proof and will definitely be back again. Notable dishes were the gnocchi, the braised meatballs and the pork loin. Appreciated the wine parings - our waiter was knowledgeable and made two great picks. Was impressed by how often the GM and Wine Director made the rounds around the dining room. This is a great addition to the Penn Quarter/Gallery Place area.

  • Just not have been impressed

Just not have been impressed with service with my two visits. The first time, the waiter knocked a glass of white wine over - it spilled on my coat ona side chair. He never apologized, much less offered to give me something to clean my coat. It was white wine and not a whole lot, but still... The second visit - the waiter was okay but the bus staff hovered like hawks, trying to snatch glasses and plates before we were ready for them to be taken. I had a couple of sips of wine left - too bad. Weird vibes to have staff watching you and totally off-key for a dining experience that should have been sublime. It was early in the evening - not at all crowded and there was no excuse for this. Food was great, however.

It was an enjoyable experience for all three of us. We (all three) would go back, which is very rare these days. Food was very good. We were seated at a rather undesirable table even though the restaurant was pretty empty when we arrived. My friend had arrived earlier and was already seated, otherwise I would have requested a change. Interior nice but uninspired. Proof is a quiet place with wonderful food in the middle of a neighborhood full of noisy, packed restaurants where great food can get overpowered by the noise and crowds (and tourists, sometimes). It doesn't at Proof. I'll go back again, gladly.
