The New York Times (October 2006) - "Beyond our tables, the panorama of the lakefront, watercraft wake lines and row upon row of grapevines, with mountains in the distance, was mesmerizing." maybe it was just an off night, but soup (raosted garlic) was pure pepper, no balance.scallop appetizer, was good, not exceptional. main salmon came raw, they said they cook it medium rare, but it was so raw, knife would not go through it. they would have made a new one, but they said it was the last one. still charged us for it.not the best, that's for sure!

We had a very cozy brunch, at the best table on the deck over looking the vineyard and the lake. Our server was very friendly and down to earth yet very professional and made us feel feel comfortable right from the beginning. I would definitly recommend this place to others.

We dined at this restaurant last year and we had such a great time we wanted to return every year but after this past experience we might try somewhere else as it did not meet our expectations and we were actually a little disappionted. The portion size of the food was small and it wasn't that spectacular as the first year. However, our waiter was great and we did not have to wait very long for the food to arrive.

Great meal. I am a real foodie and loved the combinations that the chef put together. We asked for a wine pairing to match both of our meals and our server actually got someone over to discuss it with us. I thought that was excellent. Overall, a great experience, pricy, but a great treat that we will look forward to again in the future. Wonderful view and the restaurant matched. We had a wonderful seat as well. Still want the recipe for the Cipolini marmalade. It was wonderful.

  • The service was the worst
    OpenTable Diner Since 2008
    Dined on 7/25/2008
The service was the worst we have ever had in a fine dining experience, I would not recommend this restaurant. The waiter was very rude and I would not recommend this place as the service ruined our evening. The food itself was great but if the service is hit and miss and you are paying top dollar for courses, it does not make this restaurant a favorable selection.

I was very disappointed when I went to Quails Gate for dinner. I had made reservations around a week prior requesting a table on the patio. When we arrived we were behind a party of 2 with NO reservations who requested to be on the patio, and were given a table on the patio, when we spoke to the hostess, we were then told there were no tables on the patio. It does not seem right to give priority to those who have not had teh courtesty to book a table in advance, and those of us that have not only have to eat inside the restaurant but don't get a table at the window on the lower lever or a patio seat when requested. I will not be back to Quails Gate, or recommending it to others looking for a patio experience.

Quail's Gate is a beautiful restaurant in a beautiful location. However, that sums up the positives. I ordered the appetizer special-featuring beets-that was a dismal example of culinary excess. The concept may have been novel and interesting, but the final product was bland and boring. The trout I had for my main course was acceptable, but did nothing to showcase the chef's talents-if they have any. My dining partner was happy with her scallop appetizer, but her rib eye steak was gristly and overcooked. The food was not memorable, and did little to showcase the great produce and wine of the region. Quail's Gate should increase their portion sizes when one considers the price of a dish. Or, they should offer superior food to match

It is nice to see the new restaurant. We thought that chices of menu was very adequate and enjoyble. However, choices of ingredients did not reflct season and that made very difficult to appreciate your culnary skills and talents you may have (e.g., asparagus in July, spring lamb in July, lack of fruites and vegitables in July). We are also dissapointed by the over use of pepper and other spices....this can be tricky for customers to enjoy with wine, especially your wine selections do not offer choices to match such tastes at this time (e.g., rissoto was too pepperly). But, we still like you wines!

Quail's Gate Estate Winery - Old Vines Restaurant is a bit oversold. The menu is somewhat limited, particularly with regards to appetizers; the salad/vegetarian selection is practically non-existent. The wine list is comparatively limited, given this restaurant is in a winery, but the selections are from the house and therefore are going to be less extensive than other establishments. The wine is extremely overpriced. $15.00 for a 6 oz glass of Pinot Noir is a bit steep. The food is quite eclectic and the serving portions are very appropriate. There was, however, no veal available off the menu the evening we dined. The caribou was excellent, as was the Alberta beef. One note - medium means pink not cold and red.

The meal, wine, service and view were outstanding! My only disappointment was that even though mention was made of our celebrating a special occasion, which the hostess was aware of as well as our server, no special treatment for my mom's 60th was offered. Even the Keg gives a complimentary dessert with a sparkler... the sparkler isn't necessary of course! but the personal treatment for my mom would have been a very nice and appreciated touch.

We celebrated our daughter's graduation from University and feel it was made more special with the lovely dinner and great service. Joe was our waiter and he had the perfect balance of being present and giving us privacy. Well done. The food was wonderful and I have already recommended Old Vines to friends. It was a bit noisy early in the evening... at times a bit much, but then it settled. I think this may have been out of the restaurant's control as there was one very noisy table of patrons. Over all.. a fabulous experience.
