A word from Glen Ellen Star
About Us

Established in 2012, Glen Ellen Star is the culmination of a decade-long dream by Chef Ari Weiswasser and his wife Erinn Benziger-Weiswasser. Resembling a quaint farmhouse while invoking a rural and rustic feeling of California wine country, Glen Ellen Star is a taste of both local and international flavors. It is the Weiswassers’ mission to create an inviting, neighborhood-friendly restaurant that consistently exceeds expectations. Ari has worked at New York’s Restaurant Daniel, Picholine, and Paul Liebrandt’s Corton, where he served as Chef de Cuisine. He also had a long stint at The French Laundry in Yountville, CA.

Limited and expensive wine selections. They charged us $2.00 EXTRA for Parmesan cheese which was badly needed on a totally uninspired pasta sauce. The cherry crumble dessert consisted of cherries, SUGAR and very little crumble. We had requested a 7 pm reservation but were told that only an hour earlier table was available, then we (and others - we noticed) were clearly being rushed.

This restaurant was recommended to me as a special place for my husband and I -- something out of the city and perfect for a grown-up, no kids dinner, and it did not disappoint. The food was perfect and service great. We'll definitely return!

We were lucky enough to be staying nearby at the lovely Tanglewood House and were looking for something in the area. The menu looked great. What a treat we received. Everything was absolutely fresh and seasonal and prepared simply and deliciously. We're both from NYC so we get good foo a lot, but this was the best meal we've had in months. Don't skip the wood-fired veg. Great service, memorable meal, great night.

We just returned from a week in Sonoma and dined at Glen Ellen Star twice. The good is locally sourced and delicious! Enjoyed eating inside over the patio, though with a group the patio may be the way to go.

I brought my friend here for her borthday dinner. We were extremely pleased. The food was wonderful. We ordered a few things and shared. The veggie dishes were served in their own little cast iron pans. YUM The service was great! The wine was delicious too. A bit pricey but worth it.

We were referred here when asking about a place that served locally-grown fare. They do indeed, and it's wonderful. It comes from Benzinger Winery, and is all organic. We had roasted cauliflower and Brussels sprouts, and lamb ragout, and a piece of pizza someone shared. The cauliflower was great, but the Brussels sprouts were 1/3" deep in oil, and it was just too much. The ragout also had lots of oil, and my spouse even noticed the pizza seemed to have extra oil. We'll go back, but ask for much less oil during the prep, as that just masks the flavors anyway.

Simply put, this place is a gem! This was without a doubt one of the best restaurant experiences I have ever had and the great thing is that it was not stuffy or too formal. Everything we had was not just great, but very unique with one or two ingredients that stood out. The service was impeccable and the restaurant itself is charming and quaint. Do yourself a favor and give this place a try soon..

We recently ate at the Glen Ellen Star. It was better that we could have imagined. Staying at our favorite spot, The Olea Hotel, we were just a brief walk to the Star. As I was able to make reservations on Open Table, we did not have to wait forever for a table (like at another local restaurant). We chose to sit at the bar so that we could watch the food being prepared. This was a very entertaining and exciting decision. We enjoyed picking the brains of the chefs and admiring the effort they put into each dish. In addition, the food tasted amazing. It was a little warm, as we were closest to the wood oven, but it was worth it for the show. We will definitely be back on our next trip to this neck of the woods.

Glen Ellen Star features great food in a cute and funky atmosphere. Service is casual with just the right amount of attention. Wine list is not long but has good, if slightly pricey, offerings. But it really is the food that shines -- oven roasted vegetable starters are creative and tasty. We recently had the Spanish octopus and it was very good, as was the lamb ragu. Definitely a place that warrants repeat visits.

We had heard very good things about the Glen Ellen Star and Sonoma Restaurant Week was the perfect time to try it out. We both had the $39 prix fixe menu. The Brussels sprouts with bacon and brown sugar was scrumptious. My husband had the sautéed peppers which he found a little bland. For entrees, my chicken and creamy polenta really tasty and his sea bass with fennel and a risotto was good. We both had the sour cherry cobbler with homemade ice creams which was a great comfort food dessert. We will definitely be back.

After a long day in the wine country we were not starving, but knew we needed to eat. Luckily we had a reservation at Glen Ellen Star. The food was incredible. It was so loud in this tiny Glen Ellen community gathering spot that my boyfriend and I completely missed it when the server said the pizza special of the night was topped with Bacalao and instead of Lagunitas our server thought my boyfriend wanted a PBR. The Brick chicken was gristley. The polenta it came with was tasty, but otherwise we couldn't eat our food. The evening was redeemed somewhat by the vanilla maple bourbon ice and strong coffee. We would not recommend this restaurant to friends.

...but even the midwestern meat and potatoes folk at the next table loved their first visit here too. We again ordered a sampling of all of the vegetable dishes, and were AGAIN stunned at how wonderfully each one performed. The cooking techniques, ingredient quality (biodynamic vegetables from the farm down the road, and you can taste the difference), complex sauces, and great choices made this another memorable meal. The spring pea soup was gorgeous and delicious. Make a reservation, because we've been disappointed when passing through unexpectedly and finding a waiting crowd to get in - even in the "off" season. But, it's worth the wait.

Had a great meal at the Glen Ellen Star recently. We sat at the counter and were enthralled by watching the kitchen staff cook and put the meals together. I had the brussel sprouts with the bacon marmalade (AMAZING) and the whole fish, which was cooked in the wood oven and served over a super yummy sauce. Great food, great vibe, and can't wait to go back.

We were put at a table in an enclosed outside room that had too many heaters all on high. I was not permitted to move though others who later arrived were permitted to move. When I complained to the head waitress, she implied it didn't happen and a few minutes later our waitress confessed she was the one who didn't permit us to move. She then offered to move us but food had arrived. Later when I asked a waiter if a center heater could be turned down, it was and then the head waitress would immediately turn it back up without asking. When I commented on the way out, I did not get an apology and I felt I was being a bother. The food was very good but it was ruined by the ambiance and service.

Perfect Saturday night meal with subdued perfection in food, service and ambiance. My only minor quip is the wine list which seed to lack a deep selection if CA wines. But I guess good French wines can be allowed in the heart of wine country, although it just feels off. Overall I highly recommend.

We had an early dinner here on a Saturday night after a day of wine tasting. The women at the hostess stand were very nice but our server was lackluster. The food itself was solid. The bread is not worth purchasing, the simple salad was tasty and the pizza was good. The problem with the pizza is that there are only three on the menu and god forbid you want to alter the pizza in the slightest way the make a big deal about it. The atmosphere is not great and as we previously mentioned our server put a damper on our meal. If you are craving good pizza this is the place to go but if you want anything else you are better off at one of the other restaurants a few doors down.

We dined at Glen Ellen Star last weekend ... cozy, crowded, fun and trendy. However, the menu was limited and expensive. We ordered a pizza margarita, and the flank steak entree to share, plus a bottle of wine. The pizza was a crust with tomato sauce and very little cheese or basil. The steak was three small pieces, about 4 ounces together, mediocre in texture and flavor, with some horseradish sauce and a little starch on the side. Vegetables would have been $13.50 for a bowl extra; no bread with the meal. For this we paid nearly $100. We will not go back, and as locals, know several other people making the same decision for the same reason. There is a charming restaurant just down the street, The Fig.....and it is wonderful.
