A word from Mama's Boy Southern Table & Refuge
We call ourselves a “southern table and refuge”because that’s exactly what we are. A place to enjoy casual, yet refined country cuisine where you’re treated like family and can seek respite from the world in a relaxed, inviting atmosphere that pays tribute – in every way – to all that’s great about the great South.

From the reclaimed wood from a Florence, South Carolina, water tower that brings warmth to our space, to the authentic Alabama railroad ties from which to hang your hat, Mama’s Boy is putting the “South” in South Norwalk. As for the food? Fabulously fresh, locally sourced, lovingly prepared. You’ll find all your southern favorites, from classic shrimp and grits to country fried game hen, with a modern Mama’s Boy twist…because we like to present “low country” in high style.

While I had a great time with many of your items, I was somewhat disappointed in the devil eggs being so bland. Your restaurant's food has sooo much flavor and spices of southern cooking.... it was surprising that those eggs.... spice them up!

My husband and I grew up in the South, so I thought this would be a fun date night. Farm to table Southern food, sounds fantastic. And it was! Absolutely delicious. We had the fried oysters appetizer and a BLT salad to start, The Yardbird and Shrimp and Grits (completely understand why previous reviewers mentioned wanting to lick the plate), then coconut cake and the best red velvet cake ever. The sweet tea was perfectly brewed. Hoping that some southern breweries will be featured soon (Terrapin, maybe?). We will definitely be back. Great service. Warm atmosphere. Liked that we could choose "hot spot bar" or "quieter in the back" seating. Would love to try brunch next!

I have eaten were twice. There is some variance in the food and in the service but overall its pretty good. At the price could be maybe better that pretty good, but I will give it another try before too long. The grits are quite good and the burger was especiall good. The shrimp were not terribly flavorful.

A friend and I dined on their chicken and waffles. So delicious. Tasty collard greens. The chicken was very moist with a very crispy crust. Peppered honey and maple syrup to accompany the waffles. The fig sangria is perfect for a cold winter night. We will return!

The brunch was so delicious and the ambience was lively. They really do fit the southern comfort food flair and their drinks are very unique. The chicken and waffles were the best I have ever had! On Sunday they have a live band and drink specials. A must go in my opinion!

What a great find this is! Everything from the service to the desserts was excellent. A great place to take a date or go with friends. The prices were very reasonable. The shrimp and grits was one of the best meals I ever had. I will be back many times.

Really enjoyed a menu that offered out of the ordinary food that was tasty and well prepared. Staff was friendly and helpful. Service outstanding. Only glitch was the restaurant changes more for straight up and drinks on the rocks. I felt that this was less than clear from the menu, and is unusual. When I objected they quickly adjusted my bill. I do highly recommend this dining experience!

I have been to Mama's Boy on multiple occasions and each experience has been positive. My go to restaurants are the ones that I can count on to deliver good food and good service every visit, Mama's Boy has moved into that category. I also want to give a shout-out to all their delicious dessert cakes--yum!

Sunday brunch at Mama's Boy Southern Table & Refuge was excellent. It's located in SoNo opposite the Maritime Center. Parking is easy and just a few steps away. The place was buzzing with couples, twenty-somethings, families and even a private party for a baby shower. This is a beautiful light-filled space with comfortable décor but the real stars are the food and staff. If lucky, your party of four can sit at what I'll call the "kitchen counter" where you'll get to watch the kitchen and chat with staff. The food absolutely sparkles - wonderful fresh flavors, beautiful preparations. The staff is happy, informed and helpful. Everything about Mama's Boy adds up to a delicious and fun dining experience.

This was our second visit. We are frequent travelers to the South and the food here is comparable. Small and large portions are offered for some dishes. Not a fan of ham in almost everything but otherwise the food is tasty and well prepared, though the chicken entrée was on the small side. Deviled eggs are generous and good, as are the shrimp and grits - but again, not a fan of the ham. The big cakes are good - make sure you're really hungry for dessert or have a couple of people to share the huge slice with!

This restaurant was a great find. Although we didn't realize that the New Year's Eve menu was a set menu and were looking forward to trying other selections on the main menu, we were not disappointed. The food was so wonderful - so full of flavor - and it was great to find food that was this delicious all around. The service was also great - friendly and efficient. We definitely recommend Mama's Boy and can't wait to get back to try other dishes on the regular menu.

Dined at Mama's Boy for the third time Saturday, this time with hubby and 2 grown children. We ordered 3 apps to share as well as individual entrees. The entrees came, waitress did not seem to even remember that we ordered appetizers....and ended up bringing them @ 5-10 min later. When the bill came, no apology -- instead she promoted a whiskey pairing evening -- really? The food was okay -- I remember better.

Went here for dinner with my wife and another couple. The arugula salad was great. I had the scallops over grits for dinner and it was very tasty also. For desert we all shared the pecan pie which was also a hit. After dinner we were joined by about 12 other people for drinks and a few of them ate also. They have a very good beer selection. Our server Allison did a great job and was on top of everything. All in all a great place to go for dinner and drinks.

I happened upon Mama's Boy by happy accident as I was looking for venue for dinner and live music at which to celebrate my wife's birthday. It so happened that our new favorite area band, Otis and the Hurricanes, was playing there, so we gave it shot. (We live about an hour away.) The reviews were good, and, as it turns out, all well deserved. The food was excellent and struck the right balance between being "comfort" and "creative." The meal was nicely paced, and the wait staff was outstanding. The overall decibel level was a bit high, but not at shouting level. It would not prevent me from going back, and I WILL be going back!

So nice to celebrate the best of southern cooking, usually misunderstood as over cooked veg and lots of fat. The yardbird, shrimp & grits, fried oyster, everything we tried was delicious, well presented...and wait till you see the desserts! You must save room for at least one! Truly is a refuge from the more common italian and asian offerings.

Midweek visit yet still a very busy spot. Yummy little corn muffins in the bread basket. Shrimp and grits, fried green tomatoes, generous salads - all very well prepared. If you want cake for dessert, this is the place to go, but bring a friend to help you eat the very large slice, no matter what the flavor of the day! Would prefer my shrimp and grits without the meat bits but tasty nonetheless. Reminds me of some very good meals we've enjoyed in Savannah!

I have dined at Mama's Boy several times for dinner and it has always been an outstanding experience. Last Sunday I was there for brunch and it did not disappoint!! There are bottomless mimosas, outstanding food and desserts! My guest and I share the bread and pastry basket (the scones and biscuits melt in your mouth) then I ordered the chicken and waffles which were delicious as well. The only critique I have is that I which there was a little more chicken but what was there was quite enjoyable. My guest had the lobster Benedict which she thoroughly enjoyed and the chef is very flexible, swapping out what she didn't want for something else. It's a fun atmosphere with friendly staff and owner. I hope it's around for a long time.

Grew up in CT and now live in the south 10+ years. This is a great addition to the South Norwalk area. Mama's Boy's location, decor, theme, and ambience are very good. The food is wonderful; the four of us all got different meals and there wasn't a miss in the mix. (The doughnuts are amazing.) As a new restaurant though, it is clear there are kinks being worked out. I have no doubt they'll earn 4 on my next visit. In our case, the service delay was because the first batch of waffles was not up to their standards and had to be done again. (We didn't know this as the food didn't reach the table until it was done right - which again, is a good thing.) Still, a delay is a delay. Management handled it well.
