A word from Bistro La Bonne
Bistro La Bonne’s main dishes are favorites that range from cassoulet Toulousain (cannelloni bean stew with duck confit, sausage, smoked bacon and lamb) and navarin d’agneau aux primeurs (braised leg of lamb with tomato, carrots, turnips & green beans), to grilled merguez sausage and blanquette de fruits de mer (mussels, shrimp, scallops and salmon in a champagne cream sauce).
If you seek authentic French cooking in the Washington area, take a spin up to U Street, where executive chef/owner Daniel Labonne tackles some of France’s more complex fare with a winning hand.

Our mission is to create a memorable dining experience for any special occasion, in addition to a simple dinner date with friends or a romantic evening with that special someone. So come and “Enjoy the Journey, at Bistro La Bonne”.

The food was ok, but they had only one waitress for around 20 tables during busy Valentine's Day and the service was some of the slowest I've ever experienced. Will not be back again.

We visited Bistro La Bonne before a concert at Lincoln Theatre on 2/14. The interior is what one would expect to see in a Paris bistro. We were disappointed in the wine list as not only was it far smaller than shown on their website, the selection wasn't very good. The food, however, was yummy...thus the 5 stars. The service...OMG...if I could give a negative I would. Our server was beyond bad...with the hostess and manager providing our service most of the time. For this reason, I won't be back. There are too many restaurants in metro-DC for this to be acceptable. Sad...because the ambience and food were spot on.

Really excellent find right on U St. The restaurant is small and offers exceptionally good french food for the price point. Ambiance is relaxed and pleasant, and the bar has a great selection of drinks. The restaurant also has a top notch happy hour.

Boyfriend and I love French food and usually head to Bistrot du Coin or Le Diplomate...but had walked by here a bunch of times and wondered what it was like. Well, we finally went and it was really good! Their escargots are super tender and I think superior to the two aforementioned restaurants, and the wine was great and affordable. Mussels were cooked properly. Only issue we had was that the side of ratatouille was cold, but the waitress was very nice about it and removed it from the bill. The chocolate mousse cake was ridiculously rich and good. We were very pleasantly surprised and will definitely go back!

My second visit to this kitschy, U St row house bistro didn't fail to deliver. It's as good as the little spots I've enjoyed in the French countryside & is never pretentious (note the paper napkins & worn menus- this place is about the FOOD). It's always reasonably priced- we went for NYE (no price fixe!) and got out under $150 (inc. tip, three courses, 2 cocktails, & a nice bottle of red) Highlights: The Mussels: Magic, plump, tender. I've had them both visits and in two broths- outstanding. The Steak Tartare: Get over anything you thought you knew about this dish and try it. It. Is. Amazing. They prepare it perfectly. Service can start off a bit slow, but the quality of the food and knowledge of the staff makes up for it 20 fold.

The food was not hot when it was served at the table including entrees and coffee. The water for tea was so cool that the tea bag couldn't make the water into tea. The food was good but not being hot was a topic of conversation throughout the dinner, and the wait staff seemed to have no explanation for the problem.

Having lived in U St. neighborhood since 2001, the food scene transition has been remarkable. Yet, venturing out on a Friday or Saturday night can be daunting unless you have planned ahead. Glad to see Bistro LaBonne now on OpenTable, and seating has been expanded to a third level (though not as atmospheric nor energetic, it's a good option if you actually want to carry on a conversation without struggle). Bugs Bunny, beware! The rabbit (errr, le lapin) was fantastic. Perfectly prepared, savory dish. Mussels, and steak frites, have both been reliable on past visits.

Good for some, just not us. Dining downstairs would be torture, between the bar and the dining tables, you must almost turn sideways to pass through, and the noise level is deafening. We sat upstairs, which was better, but the table for 2 was so small that all the food could not fit on it if you order extra plates, which we did....poor design! The wait staff was energetic and attentive, a challenge as they had 3 floors of tables to serve. It has a wide choice of mussel offerings....,we love mussels...they only had one with a red sauce, and it was very watery, although tasty. The mussels were a good sized portion as an entree with excellent french fries. The beef bourguignon was good, as was the house pinot noir.

Made a reservation for Sunday brunch for 11:15. It was not too crowded, but was led to the 2nd floor. My BF and I were a bit disappointed to be seated under the stairwell, which seemed to be out of the way and cramped. This actually turned out well, because by noon, it was filling up and we still had a bit of privacy. Hostess and waiter were both pleasant, attentive, and unobtrusive. The only drawback to my meal was that the muffin on my benedict dish was a bit burnt. Other than that, the flavors of all the other dishes were great. I would definitely go back and try a different brunch dish...before I give a definitive rating. I'm hoping the burnt toast was an anomaly.

This place had a fabulous extended menu - there was something for the Francophiles in our party and also the less adventurous. for starters, the endive salad and the beef tartare were fabulous. Lots of mussels options. Frites were delish. Our friends order the french onion soup and liver and loved them. Only weird thing was the wine list, which wasn't very good. We'll be back.

Great place to try all those things you don't make at home: Steak Tartare, Rabbit, Goat, Duck... All delicious and all served graciously. Only catch was that our table wasn't ready on time. How did Bistro Le Bonne handle it? Hosted us to a glass of wine while we waited! Perfect. Especially since we had just been hurried out of our happy hour stop rather undiplomatically so that the next group could sit down.

The escargot was absolutely fantastic! The pesto and garlic oil with them made me keep dipping bread over and over and over. It was the best I have had in many French restaurants! It was happy hour so I ordered the Thai Mussels. Very good but I have had better. Although the server was very nice, I felt she was not overly dedicated to the service. Yes, she stopped by and asked how my meal was, but several times, I had to wave to her and one time, she was on her cell phone and acknowledged she would get to me when done with her personal business. Her assistants who actually brought the meal were very courteous and quick to deliver my meal and clean up! All in all, really enjoyed this place and would go back again!

On Saturday night I was in the mood for French, so we decided to visit BL. It was just what I was craving... Kit Royal, lobster crab bisque, the vegetarian special and creme brulee. The veg special was 2 small white pumpkins stuffed with mushroom risotto. There was s little drizzle of balsamic vinegar that balanced the sweet and savory together. My husband and I enjoyed speaking with the staff. It seems like a place we could make a regular destination!

Based on the yelp and open table reviews I read, I was expecting a solid brunch. I was sorely disappointed. The food was mediocre at best and the waitress only stopped by to refill my coffee when we flagged her down as she was taking a newcomer's order. Getting the bill took almost twenty minutes. There are many other terrific options along U Street. I would skip this one.

The website was nice, the menu looked great... But the food was mediocre (and as such was overpriced). We had brunch. Lukewarm coffee, orange juice from a carton (which is OK other than much of the competition has fresh), over salted (everything), too much low quality cheese (onion soup), over cooked and dried out (quiche). The service was friendly, but slow.
