  • Skates is a wonderful choice

Skates is a wonderful choice for a nice lunch or dinner. The view of SF Bay is fantastic. Skates can be very busy at lunch or dinner, but even so, the noise level is low. This is a real plus, considering how noisy most restaurants currently are. The food is nicely prepared and presented. The hosts and wait-staff are accommodating and attentive. We have dined at Skates on numerous times and would recommend it to anyone.

Usually enjoy for dinner. Did not have a good brunch experience. Our food came out while our appetizer was on the table. They took the main courses back and set them under a heat lamp and brought the same dishes out to us 20 mins later. Not what I expected. My COB was in town and this is not the impression I wanted him to remember about our brunch meeting. This was more of a Denny's with a view rather than a place to entertain someone. I will say the host staff are always friendly and attentive.

The only redeeming value about Skates is the view. Without it I would never go back there. I am only going there with out of town guests, with less discriminating tastes. Given the quality of food that one can get at other Berkeley or Oakland restaurants for the same price, this is just not competitive.

We visit Skates often. However, this is no doubt the very worse service we have ever experienced. Our reservations were for 5:30 and we were seated immediately. Many tables were yet to be occupied. It took 10 minutes for our waiter to arrive, another 20 minutes for our drinks and then another 25 minutes for our first course. We don't mind waiting for our meal, but to wait for service when the restaurant is not very busy? We sat there with no water and no service; while the other patrons were served. Additionally, our waiter had on an extremely dirty apron, his hair was unkempt and he seemed distracted. We watched our drinks get warm as they sat at the bartenders station. Obviously this poor service was a one man show.

I ordered the Surf and Turf off the daily menu. It was described on the menu as steak medallions, crab, and prawns. The Waitperson said it was a new entree. When I received my entree, it was actually 3 steak medallions with a small amount of crab in bernaise sauce, and one split prawn. Not what I was lead to believe according to the menu, or description offered by the waitperson. Overall, I was very disappointed with my dinner. It should have been described on the menu as "steak medalions topped with crabmeat and (one) prawn.in bernaise sauce, If I return to this restaurant, I will not order this entree again.

The most memorable aspect of this experience was the excellent service from the hostess. She was very professional and remembered both my and my guests name. Food was fine, service was fine, view was nice. It's a little dated and old school (think 80's) - but in a fun way. Seems like it would be fun to meet with a group for sunday brunch w/ bloody mary's.

We both enjoyed the Calamari appetizer, great garnish and interesting sauce. I liked the House salad; my wife didn't like her's (too much lettuce, vinaigrette dressing saturated). She liked her Crab cake's, I didn't enjoy my Sea Bass encrusted with potatoes, the whole thing was to mushy, potatoe plus soft fish plus soft rice and the horseradish was lumped on one end, not evenly distributed. The cheese cake was excellent. 3 1/2 stars.

I've been to Skates before but this will be the only time I will remember it, and not in a good way. It was Easter Sunday so I ordered the Eggs Benedict, but was not aware that it comes with egg shells and all. Believe me, crunchy eggs is not a good thing. The only reason why I order Eggs Benedict is for the runny eggs and guess what - they weren't runny - in fact they were practially hard boiled. I showed the server who happened to be walking by just as I took the egg shells out of my mouth and all she did was apologize, didn't even offer to replace it - although she did try to make it up by complementing my dress - but sorry hon, that just wasn't good enough. I don't think I'll be back anytime soon. What a disappointment.

My husband and son enjoyed their orders except me- that's why I rated your food as good. I had brunch (ordered omelet with shrimp. etc) which actually did not come out as described in your menu. It was an ordinary tasting omelet similar to the ones being served in like Denny's-type of restaurant. I did enjoy the dessert. Because it was Easter, the place was crowded and the table next to us was a big round table full with very loud customers. Thank you.

We made a reservation for 7:15 and were seated 30 minutes late. Our server showed up at the table 20 minutes after our being seated - no drinks, no appetizers to keep us sated. Dinner was served 30 minutes after our salad plates were pulled - apparently there had been a problem in the kitchen. We weren't updated about the delay until our dinners finally arrived. Portions were *very* small and were a sad ending the the repeated delays. No apologies from the management. Could be a great place to take out of towners but service and seating are too unreliable.

We were late for our reservation but the maitre d got us a table anyway and pretty quickly which was very nice. Once at our table we got water right away and then a server came shortly after. Our server was very nice and at first very attentive but once we had asked to have a little more time to look at the menu she was gone for quite a long time. It was quite busy when we were there so I guess that's understandable. Once we got our food it was excellent, very filling and tasty. The only thing I wasn't pleased with was the starting house salad I got for my meal. It was soaked in dressing and very bland, had little in it besides lettuce, but everything else was very good.

Service has always been tops. My sister whose birthday was being celebrated, wanted a special drink they don't normally make. They took pains to concoct it including several trips back and forth to our table. Good sturdy menu with many favorites. The scallops are to perish for. Some dishes are over salted which is the only negative. The restaurant offers a 3 bridge view, easily observed on a clear day. Great place for special treats or when you want to impress someone.

I've been going to Skates for years, however, this was the first time I made a special request for seating. I was delighted to find that we were seated in the Northwest corner of the restaurant, overlooking the Berkeley Marina, the Golden Gate Bridge, and the city of San Francisco. As the sun dropped into the clearing between the blanket of clouds and the horizon, the staff promptly lowered the shade cloth to ensure none of the patrons were looking directly into the sun while dining. As soon as the sun had dipped behind Mt. Tamalpias, the staff re-opened the shades so that we could continue to enjoy the sunset. All of this occurred while our familiar waitress met our every request. She was experienced and familiar with the menu. Excellent!

Skate's is always an excellent choice for business meals and special occassions. I dine at Skate's quite regularly -- maybe once a month. The food and service is always outstanding, and the view is incomparable. My out-of-town dining companions are always blown away. I have one business associate who insists on eating at Skate's for his annual visit. That speaks volumes when you consider the wide selection of restaurants we have in the Bay Area.
