Sur La Place is a cozy, fine dining gem nestled in the renowned Palisades area of Washington D.C. A Product of its' sister restaurant, Mannequin Pis, located in Olney, Maryland, Sur La Places specializes in exquisite Belgian cuisine. With over 20 varieties of Mussels and over 30 varieties of fine Belgian beer, one comes to realize that Sur La Place is not your ordinary restaurant. The menu takes a trip through Belgium, from Grilled Duck Pate or Wild Boar and Cranberry Sausage to a Seafood Bouillabaisse with Gambass, Mussels, Salmon, Sea Scallops, and Lobster. Fantastic desserts and a fully stocked bar put the cap on a great experience. With its exposed brick, deep wood hues, and dark red drapery, Sur La Place is an excellent choice for a romantic date, a business meeting, or simply a fine night out in the city. It's knowledgeable and service oriented staff are always eager to serve you and we look forward to having you as our guest.

  • Fabulous mussels. this place

Fabulous mussels. this place is sort of a hole in the wall but the variety and abundance of mussels were worth it. The tarragon mussels were amazing. My husband had mushrooms but he thought mine was better. Not too expensive. The waiter, as far as we could tell, had half the restaurant to himself so he was run off his feet. Had to fight to get our bill so didn't ask for coffee or more drinks. Know before you go.

I have to concur with all of the other Yelp and Trip Advisor reviews out there - the food is definitely worth going back for, but the service is TERRIBLE (but not malicious). We waited 45 mins for someone to bring us our drink order. We sat the whole time with just water, no bread or anything. Our reservation was for 9 pm and it was pretty busy, but by 9:30 it had cleared out, yet no one came to check on us or bring us anything. It was unbelievable. Not that the waiter was not pleasant - he was very friendly. He was just inefficient and maybe overworked. We then waited an additional 40 mins for our food, and after that, 20 mins for our check. We closed down the place - because they were so slow! Go for the food, not the service.

Normally the food and service is quite excellent. However, I do not recommend a visit during Valentine's Day as the staff are over-taxed and the menu selection is limited.

I was expecting to get the regular menu. Unfortunately, the Saint-Valentine menu had limited choices (and most of them were on the expensive side!). I ordered mariniere-style mussels. I am a Belgian citizen and therefore I know how mussels should be prepared. My sauce was rather tasteless. In addition, I ordered a Belgian abbey beer but the waiter did not know how to serve it (the glass has to be bent in order to avoid too much foam). The waiters were friendly and attentive, though.

Previously we have dined at your fine restaurant and we looked forward to spending Valentine's Day with you. We arrived at 7 PM and had a lovely table by the window. Our order was taken promptly and then we waiting about 30 minutes before receiving one soup. Then waited at least 15 minutes or more for the Mussels. (many Mussels had empty shells and not that many on bottle of pot). Our order 1 order Creamed Butternut Squash 2 orders - 1 kilo Mussels 1 Beer @$12 Then having waited so long we asked for the bill. The charge was for $91 plus tax. The one charge was for $55 for the Valentine's Day package --- but my husband was never provided or offered the champagne or the dessert --- I asked that the bill be voided and a new bill for wha

Meant to go to Voila! across the street for their eggs Benedict, but happy we got our Belgian places confused, bc brunch was even tastier here. The eggs benedict were perfect, and the fresh fruit cup truly was fresh and put together with generous care -- not a haphazard garnish. That said, service was horrible, even though it wasn't crowded when we came. It took nearly an hour to get two simple brunch dishes, and no one checked on us in the meantime. Had to get up and go find someone to ask for orange juice. They need to put more energy into pushing out their food and getting it to the table, and into training their wait staff. The food itself is excellent.

We were promptly seated and given the option of ordering while we waited for one late-comer (we were a total of 8); our server was flexible and pleasant. Some disappointment in that several beers were out of stock, but the suggested substitutes were good. Food was delicious and generous. Prices on the menu were higher than those listed outside the day before, but we did not challenge them, as we did not read again the outdoor sign before coming in. Not out of line for the quality of the food. We'd come here again for a pleasant family meal. Every table was filled and a line waiting when we left, but we never felt pushed to finish and leave, which was really nice.

A unique venue in the Palisades, we and our guests have always enjoyed the extensive variety of mussels, crisp "pomme frittes," and draught Belgian beer. The restaurant is usually busy and in the past service was sometimes sketchy, but that was not a problem in our most recent visit as they appear to have taken on another server which just makes the difference. One personal pet peeve is the presence of onions in an otherwise delicious escargot. (Sur la Place used to prepare it without onions and onions are not mentioned in the menu description, but the chef appears determined to detract from the preparation of this traditional delight!)

The food is excellent -- although the Belgium restaurant across the street is better known, Sur La Place has food on the same par at a better price. You can enjoy eating and carry on a conversation with your dinner partners at this restaurant.

This was my first experience at Sur la Place, and, being the type of diner that gives no second chances....if I have a bad meal or a bad experience, then I just don't go back. Well, let me say that I definitely will go back to Sur la Place. Our party of three had three different preparations of mussels, and they were all excellent! Very large and fresh, and there wasn't a single one that didn't open. The escargots were to die for!!!!!!!!!!!! However, I wouldn't recommend it for those who don't love baked cheesy goodness. Yes, they're smothered with cheese and then baked so that the cheese bubbles and browns and sticks to the crock in which they're baked.. As I said, to die for!I definitely would recommend Sur la Place!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sur La Place is a lovely little place on MacArthur Blvd. that has a great selection of mussels and tasty food. The service, however, is rather slow, albeit friendly. It is a nice, intimate place for a date, and appears to be a good, neighborhood joint for drinks at the bar. I'd recommend it if you have the time and a captivating date :)
