A word from The General
In early 2013, EMM Group opened their largest Manhattan project to date on the well-worn Lower East Side corner of Bowery and Spring Streets. The 20,000 square-foot property at 199 Bowery houses multiple concepts including The General, a bustling destination restaurant serving up Modern Asian Cuisine in an inspired and imaginative style. Top Chef Season 3 Winner and Executive Chef Hung Huynh has created a menu featuring a wide range of innovative dishes such as the Tuna Tataki BLT, Philly Peppersteak Sweetbuns, Peking Duck and The General's Beef and Broccoli, all marked with creative, culinary twists and turns around traditional eastern flavors to ensure a truly interactive and exciting experience for restaurant patrons. Additional reservations are also available in our Jazz Room, Make A Reservation at The General Jazz Room.

Overall I had a nice time at The General. They were a bit overwhelmed checking in. Four times I had to tell them we were all here ready to be seated. That was not a good experience and they need to get rid of the manager.

Very solid overall experience, appetizers perfect to share (Philly peppersteak was great as was Reuben spring rolls). Fried rice small but good, and sea bass was best dish of the night. Drinks a bit pricey but creative. Would go back but with more than 2 people to try large format dishes.

The food was good and the Manager was amazing he was very nice and warm. Our waitress however was not that great. She seemed to be in a rush to get us out which did not make me or my husband feel comfortable. We didn't complain about her because the manager was so great. The hostess were also very nice and welcoming. The Restaurant itself was very cool and had a good atmosphere. The experience would have been a 10 had it not been for the waitress. It was my birthday so it kind of ruined it.

Nothing was wrong with The General. The food was delicious, I liked everything I tried. Our waiter was fantastic and knowledgeable of the drink and food menu, he made great suggestions. I loved it. It's been 5 days since I went and I am still talking about the food. Great place!

THE FOOD WAS EXCELLENT!!! Some of the cocktails like the Diana Prince could use some prettier presentation/garnish. We had a really amazing waitress! She was really attentive and sweet. The dessert we had was out of this world, delicious and it looked too beautiful to eat. Can't wait to go back to this place! A++++

  • Fun Scene, Unmemorable Food
    OpenTable Diner Since 2007

Great scene for groups. Loud acoustics but fun and energetic. Food was good but not foodie memorable. Portions are small. Allows you to try mulitple dishes and share. Staff is young and friendly but inexperienced. Service started off well but the wait person forgot about us as the restaurant got busy. The tables were on top of each other, so I was surprised he forgot to clear our table and ask if we wanted coffee or dessert.

I would have to say the table was a bit disappointed as what we saw from him on Top Chef. Nothing about the menu exudes him (maybe the Fried Rice which had his name on it.) Unlike other Top Chef who have opened their own establishment and can control their menu and flavor pallet. Here, this corporate eatery by EMM seems to drone out ‘Asian food’ using the celebrity status of Hung, ‘smaller is fancier’ mentality and that clearly shows through If you want flashy, uber trendy with a name, this is the right spot but if you are looking for substance beyond that The General isn't the place for you.

Great restaurant, very cool, food was great. Service was a bit of an issue, not because of the waitress but because the bar took about 30 minutes to fix our drinks.

We were absolutely blown away by The General...not only by the spectacular food but also the attentive, warm service and great atmosphere. Each dish was truly memorable and the finale, The General's Freezer (I think?), was so charming, whimsical and yet still absolutely delicious. The culinary diversions didn't sacrifice amazing taste.

  • The General is the new hot spot
    OpenTable Diner Since 2005VIP

Food at The General is quite innovative and will appeal to foodies. The service was very friendly, which is refreshing for a "hot spot;" however, the server did miss one thing in our order. The hosts at reception and all the bartenders were hospitable. Our only critique was that the restaurant tries to fit too many seats at a table at times, creating an impasse for servers (not fun being asked to move your seat every five minutes). Overall, the restaurant was great, and we would recommend. Despite having a cold-weather entrance, it would be helpful to add a velvet curtain at the front door to mitigate winter breezes.

I really liked the service. From the bartendress who served us our first (crave-worthy) cocktail; to Nada our waitress who was sweet, accommodating and attentive; to Chris the general manager who took the time to introduce himself and made sure that we were happy with our experience. The food was fresh and delicious (the sizzling Kobe steak was tender and had just the right mix of acidity and sweetness). I will definitely go back and recommend the restaurant to friends.

Had an absolutely amazing time here with my best friends this past Saturday! The food was delish, fun and trendy interior, cool people, but what I will remember the most is the impeccable service. I wish I'd remembered our waitresses name so I could give a shout out to her. A plus is that Finale is right next door so if you're up for some dancing after dinner, just take five steps to your right :) Will defenitely come back!
