A word from Restaurant Soba Nippon
Soba Nippon is located on Fifth Avenue in the center of Manhattan, right by Rockefeller Center, the Theater District, and many shopping destinations. We serve homemade Soba (buckwheat noodles) and Tofu (soybean curd) using buckwheat and soybean harvested on our very own farm in Canada. We were the first restaurant to serve the real Teuchi (hand-made) soba in New York City and we created the original Soba Salad, which has now become one of the most popular Japanese dishes in the world. There are many health advantages in eating Soba, since it is low in calories and rich in nutrients. A single serving of Soba contains only 132 calories and offers lots of protein, vitamins B1, B2, E, and leuthin. In addition to Soba we serve many varieties of Kobachi (Japanese tapas) accompanied with our excellent selection of sake and wine. Soba Nippon was featured in the Emmy Nominated television series, Sex in the City, and has been highly praised by Eric Asimov of the New York Times.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "The food is average. We were looking forward to sukiyaki since not many restaurants serve it. It was OK. They didn't cook it at the table. There were only two pieces of meat per order. The sauce was average. They forgot one of our desserts and it took 30 minutes to get the check. I wouldn't return."

  • "This restaurant appeared under the sushi listings. After being seated we were informed that sushi was no longer on the menu but that they specialized in soba noodles. We stayed; big mistake! We selected the steak wrap and octopus dumpling appetizers. The steak wraps were beautifully presented, though tasted like cast-offs from the Steak'um wafer steak factory. The dumplings were garnished with flakes that continued to move in a wavy/wriggly fashion throughout our meal, intriguing but also unsettling. I managed to bite just a dumpling's dough and actually gagged at what tasted like smoke and filth. I never got to the octopus. The warm noodles were bland and the broth and duck unappealing. We left nearly everything. The staff was friendly."

  • "I was quite surprised that this restaurant was rated moderate for pricing. The 4 of us split 2 small appetizers and each had a noodle soup. We each had a glass of house white wine and our bill was a shocking $175.00. The appetizers were great but the soups were mediocre compared to any other I've had. The shrimp tempura udon noodle soup was served with the shrimp within the soup and not on the side which caused it to be soggy with the batter falling off. The soup taste was ordinary. The service was friendly but unfortunately didn't make up for the entrees."

  • "In NY manhattan, there are many Japanese restaurant, but I think this restaurant can offer good quality Japanese food from the view point of Japanese. Especially we can enjoy a delicious soba noodle, as the name of this restaurant shows. I felt the cost is little expensive, but I can recommend this restaurant to Japanese food lovers."

  • "We were there on Friday late afternoon. Been late for the show we expressed our concerns to the hosted. They couldn't be more accommodating. I've never had such ggratifying experience with service. And the food was simple and absolutely amazing. "

  • "One should really like Soba noodles. The way this restaurant prepares them I found I am not s fan of Soba noodles. Vegetarians will be happy with the menu, but I have had better Asian style soups in Vietnamese style restaurants for a much lower price. The family decided we would not return to this restaurant. However we realize this is a matter of taste and preference for Asian/Japanese style cuisine. Ambience and service as well as food preparation was all good. So if you like Soba noodles this restaurant is worth a try."

  • "Only a block from MOMA! We went at 6:00. Quiet, so we could easily talk. Waitress didn't rush us, so we could linger. Food quite good. This is not cutting edge Japanese but great in other respects."

  • "Wouldn't recommend this place for lunch unless you enjoy a wait staff that hovers over you asking 3 times in the first 5 minutes after sitting down what we wanted, without a smile or greeting. Food was was fine, but pricey, wait staff grabbed plates before my chopsticks hit the table to make for a super uncomfortable but quick turn of our table. Not a chance that I'd ever go back."

  • "Just before heading to take our plane at JFK, going back to Paris (France), we had a very early meal (at least for us) in Soba Nippon. The food was very good, the servings generous and the service impeccable. We were 3 or 4 parties of two in a huge room, rather faded and almost sad. Nevertheless, we enjoyed the meal, at our pace and very close to our hôtel, ideally central."

  • "Very disappointing restaurant. The only thing good about it is it's location. The portions were extremely small and very over priced. The sushi did not seem fresh at all and the dumplings were just OK. Do yourself a favor and pass on this one. There are so many other restaurants to choose from. Don't waste your money here."

  • "as a soba afficionado, I would like Soba Nippon to have stronger stock and some sweetness to the broth and less soy sauce - which is a little to soy saucy."

  • "Soba Nippon has been around for a long time and we have been there many times. It's an excellent Japanese restaurant. The food is consistently excellent. The service is also very good. You can't go wrong there."

  • "BEST. SOBA. EVER. the artisinal nature and ownership of the product proves what can be done with something that many consider simple - IT ISN'T SIMPLE. and everything - noodles, sushi, salads, soups- was beautifully presented and delicious."

  • "I eat in NYC a lot both personally and professionally and so ive become used to high prices in midtown. however the prices at Soba Nippon were so high as to leave us gasping! i have never seen a restaurant with such poor value."

  • "Prices are very high for average fare. Wouldn't go back."

  • "This is a neighborhood favorite because of its location, but the quality has been going downhill recently. Go for the Soba salad or the noodles; my sushi had a distinct "refrigerator" flavor to it. The dining experience would be more pleasurable if the wait staff weren't so obvious about wanting to turn tables."

  • "In a word, my lunch experience at Soba was nice. The host was nice to me upon my arrival. The waitstaff were nice. The food was nice - decent selection. The cost was nice. That's about it. Never been for dinner; only lunch - nice place to go for lunch."

  • "Lured by an article in a NY paper about this being Yankee star Hideki Matsui's favorite NY Japanese eatery ,our family of four took my 25 year old son here for his birthday. Matsui is among his favorites and so's Japanese food. Service was great. Food was great, price was very reasonable for Mid-Town Manhattan.Enjoyed it thoroughly...Recommend it highly!"

  • "As usual, both my dining companion & I greatly enjoyed the lunch special; their noodles are consistently excellent. The issue was that service was poor. As soon as we were seated (with a reservation), we were informed that if we wanted noodles (pretty much the point of this place) that we should order ASAP, because a group was coming in and if our order got stuck behind theirs (they weren't even in the restaurant yet) we would be significantly delayed. We ordered quickly, but then we continued to be rushed the rest of the meal. If they couldn't handle having tables other than the one large tour group, maybe there was one or other reservation they shouldn't have taken, rather than making repeat customers feel like second-class citizens."

  • "We were looking for something different from the norm and this delivered! Food had unbelievable flavor, especially my entrée "Tan tan" something. Definitely worth a visit!"

  • "House-made soba noodles made from buckwheat grown on the restaurant's own farm... pretty tough to beat. Proper, attentive and gracious service makes the somewhat high (Midtown) prices easier to swallow. Many places nearby charge just as much for inferior quality. One of my favorite lunch dishes is the cold chicken."
