Restaurant PommeSpecial dinner a hitLa Pomme is a gem hidden in a very small town but well worth the drive. Our meal and service was very good / excellent. It was a birthday and anniversary celebration for two couples, which made it special. The prices are a bit high for rural VA, but it is absolutely worth it for a special occasion. Our evening there a wedding reception was also going on in the private dining room, which made for a few more people than normal, but the separate dining room is well hidden. The distinctlly French food is always of impeccable quality, fresh and delicately presented. The chef owner is often visible chatting at tables, always charming. Particularly good dishes are the sole and the crab cakes, and they make a mean Bloody Mary! Even for someone living as I do in Fairfield County, Connecticut, the prices seem inordinately high ($18.95 for a lunch portion of sole?). But they obviously know their clientele and even in a rather unprepossessing little country town they have succeeded for quite a number of years to entice sufficient people into the beautifully appointed dining room to make a go of it. The interior/decor is very pleasant, comfortable, and reminded us of small restaurants we have enjoyed in Europe -- yet not pretentious. Actually, a little the opposite on the weeknight we were there. The food was great! (The best avacado appetizer I've had -- delicious.) The prosecco aperitif was a generous pour; the Bordeaux by the glass better by far than most wines by the glass and the refreshing house Virginia Chardonnay is a bargain! The house salad with its hint of slightly mustard vinaigrette transported me back to France. My rack of lamb was superb: done to perfection and plated attractively. My husband's sole with Meuniere sauce was not up to the lamb. Lemon tart with basil sauce and a garnish of blueberries surpassed expectations with the basil sauce adding the perfect flavor foil for the wonderfully intense lemon tart. The dining room only has about a dozen tables (for 4 each), but there is a larger space next door for groups or parties. We had to share since we both loved both of the dishes. Folks should NOT wait for a special occasion to visit Pomme. We hadn't been back that way in a few years, but found it as good as ever. The salade landaise is a delicious meal in itself, chock-a-block with a variety of interesting tidbits the menu promises; onion soup here is perfectly "comme il faut:" a rich broth, plenty of onion, and a cheese topping that complements, rather than overwhelms, the dish. A nice hearty fish soup and a plate of fried oysters with salad were also excellent. Last, the addition of a light basil reduction to the lemony sauce on the lemon tart was brilliant.
