A word from Restaurant Nora
In April 1999, Restaurant Nora became America's first certified organic restaurant. This means that 95% or more of everything that you eat at the restaurant has been produced by certified organic growers and farmers all who share in Nora's commitment to sustainable agriculture. Nora always offers seasonal, fresh organic food, prepared in a healthy, balanced way and enjoys a "big following" of environmentalists and politicians, who can eat here with a clear conscience, knowing that what's on their plate hasn't polluted the environment, is healthy for them, and tastes good too. Nora offers a special chef's tasting menu, which is perfectly accompanied by a spectacular choice of wines from our award winning wine list, featuring over 100 exceptional wines from small wine producers.

Diner Reviews
  • "Staff was wonderful. Devour and overall atmosphere was splendid. The food was good but the ribeye was not a good choice. They should get better cuts or take it off the menu. Everything else from coffee to desert was good. I would go back."

  • "I went with my boyfriend for our one year anniversary and we had personalized menus congratulating our anniversary. The staff were extremely accommodating. The food was good, on the edge of great. Everything was executed perfectly but nothing was outstanding. Overall I would go back in a heart beat and would recommend it to others. A great dining experience in DC. "

  • "Visited Nora on a trip to Washington a couple of years ago and was not disappointed by my return visit. The food was excellent and the restaurant has a lovely atmosphere."

  • "My colleagues/ girl friends and I had dinner recently at Nora's when we were in Washington DC on business. The dinner was lovely. We had a great time and the food was delicious. I would wholeheartedly recommend Nora's."

  • "so many menu items sounded so wonderful, the only problem was we wanted to try to many things! everything was delicious, and restaurant nora has been added to our go-to list for a fine dining occasion."

  • "Restaurant Nora is a treasure in Washington. It is clearly in the business dinner/special occasion class of restaurants, but well worth the visits. Nora's organic foods are carefully, even painstakingly, prepared. Everything on the menu can only be described as superb. Nora couples that with a varied list of excellent wines, a wonderful selection of desserts and a fine selection of after-dinner drink drinks and cordials. The atmosphere is comfortable. For a more intimate setting, ask to be seated in the wine library, which is tastefully decorated with tapestries that reduce the noise level and allow for pleasant conversation."

  • "This was our second visit to Restaurant Nora, a haven of tranquility and civility, a welcome relief from the usual crazy-noisy restaurants in DC. Although the restaurant was full, we could carry on a conversation without shouting. Thankfully, there was no thumpy, annoying synthesizer "music" that is prevalent in so many restaurants. We were able to relax and converse and enjoy our meal. Anastasia, or server, was superb. The food was perfectly prepared. We recommend Restaurant Nora to all ir friends in the DC area. We will definitely return."

  • "My wife and me were there 25 years ago and enjoy the food. We return and the restaurant has keep its excellence. I recommend this restaurant."

  • "Staff were accommodating and didn't rush us from the bar to the table."

  • "The restaurant was empty, they seated us at the worst table. Two women, we had a view of the rest rooms and the wait station. We asked for another table. There were plenty. They moved us one table away. Tables remained empty all night. Who did they seat at the table we rejected? An older African-American couple. Food was good, wait staff too but the hostess staff has to go. We won't be eating here again, sorry to say. We don't need to be treated like this, there are many other and much better options."

  • "I go to Nora's for special occasions and this was no different. I arrived early and was seated promptly, the server came by to get my drink order, very nice and orderly. My dinner partner arrived and we ordered again everything was good but one item. Nora's is so poorly lit you cannot read the menu without your phone flashlight. Quite embarrassing but you could not read the menu. Also i'd say the vegetarian offerings are VERY limited. Nora's is nice but needs to turn on the lights and offer more than one or two vegetarian offerings."

  • "This was my second visit to the restaurant. I am thrilled that it is organic but I cannot say that the food was anything exceptional to warrant the higher prices. This was the same experience that I had at my first visit so I was hoping that it would change. I will say that the service on the first visit was exceptional. However, this was not the case on my second visit. I felt that we were more of a nuisance to our server than a welcomed guest. Was it because I only ordered a soup and salad? Who knows. I simply would expect more from Restaurant Nora."

  • "The prices are climbing....and the cost/benefit ratio is becoming questionable. Just means I will dine a few less times."

  • "Fresh seasonal food, time after time. I brought out of town guests here to enjoy the best of DC food. I can always count on Nora's being at top form."

  • "Since moving to D.C. in 1999 I have heard nothing but rave reviews of Nora's. I have been waiting a long time to dine there, and when my BF and her great guy came for a visit, I knew we would have to try Nora's at last. The food was amazing, the service (thank you Tom) was superb and the most pleasant dining room is quiet enough to have a conversation, but a lovely atmosphere. Yes this place is pricey, but it is the very best for a special occassion. All the food is fresh, fresh and so very good. Great wine suggestions, espcially from Nora's son's winery in WA."

  • "We took friends visiting from Chicago there Saturday expecting a terrific dining experience but were disappointed. While the waiter was impatient to take our order, the service was slow; the plates from our finished first course were left on the table for at least 15 minutes. And while the beet salad was declicious, it was way over priced ($15). Three of the main courses we ordered were well prepared and very tasty, but the duck entree was overdone and dry. Also, I had promised our friends that Nora's was a place were we could talk and catch up, but it was very noisy! What gives?"

  • "We went to Nora for our anniversary dinner and the experience was outstanding! We were given a quiet table in the corner and the staff was attentive but did not rush us. We took our time enjoying each course and the waiters recommendations for wine pairings. The food was fantastic and we had a very memorable and delightful evening."

  • "Our first time to this restaurant was a lovely surprise. We arrived a wee bit early so after using the valet parking, we walked around the neighborhood which was charming. We were seated in the garden room which was quiet and romantic. The food from start to finish was creative and superb. We are from Pennsylvania and would happily return to Restaurant Nora when visiting DC again."

  • "We were looking forward to the evening but ended up being very disappointed. We were kept waiting for 20 minutes to be seated. The service was terrible. Food was acceptable but certainly not worth the unprofessional service and lack of organization. Not recommended."

  • "I have been to Nora many times over the past 20 years, and unfortunately this was the most negative experience I've had. First, they overbooked themselves -- the lobby was full of patrons waiting for their tables that they had reserved, and the problem cited was that "people weren't finished with their tables yet." Next, we were told who our waitress was, but she actually never arrived at our table; the maitre d' came over and took our order about 15 minutes later, with no mention of what had happened to our server. To top it off, I was informed 30 minutes after placing my order that they were "out" of the fish that I had ordered and was asked to choose a new dish. I would avoid the restaurant until they get their act back together."

  • "One of our three entrees was not up to Nora Restaurant quality. The pork roast was tough and not very favorable. The appetizers, dessert and service were very good; but one entree was disappointing."
    Dined on 3/26/2014
  • "Again, the reason why we go to Nora is for the excellent food, great service, locally grown as possible food elements, and to be cared for. Nora was successful once again. thanks"

  • "Nora's is one of Washington's great restaurants--certainly one of the top ten for food, service, and ambience. It's the ideal place for group events. I hosted one for 32 in the Wine Library that was managed magnificently. It's also ideal for a romantic evening. And I loved Asian Nora's back in the day"

  • "Everything about Nora's is lovely, except the food is not quite at the level it needs to be to get a 4 or 5 star review. My fish was very dry. Tasty though. Service was a bit brusque. Polite but I felt as though they were rushing us to turn the table. I wholeheartedly support their philosophy and the charm of the rooms remains -- really quite a lovely restaurant. I will have to try it again perhaps, but may wait to hear that there is an improvement out of the kitchen first."

  • "Wait staff seemed unorganized. There would be no one and then 5 servers would show up to deliver your course. It was not clear who our chief server was. The duck was under seasoned and the lemon in the risotto with the scallops was overpowering. Gluten-free chocolate cake was underwhelming."

  • "Came highly recommended by locals for organic food. It's a quaint little restaurant much like the size of a lot of restaurants in NYC. Reservations are highly advised for Sat nites. Service is pleasant & efficient but hurried. Prices are on par with NYC restaurants & pricey for what it is. Nora seems to have an identity crisis - decor a mishmash collection, from quilts to model airplanes to plaster wall decors. Setup akin to fine-dining, yet service is chaotic. Seating & cutlery looks like it fits in cafeterias.Ordered the peekytoe crab & avocado salad - a tad salty & a little too mushy; Pei mussels, Romaine caesar, & Amish duck breast. Everything a little too salty but fresh. Would I go back if I visited the area again? No, thanks."

  • "My wife and I celebrated our 2 year anniversary and future baby (she's 8 months pregnant) at Restaurant Nora. I left a brief note explaining the occasion when making my Open Table reservation. The hostess wished us a happy anniversary when she seated us. Then, she gave us the menus which had been personalized to say "Happy Anniversary and Congratulations on the Baby!" Then, our waiter came by and also wished us congratulations, and suggested that we start with a glass of champagne and apple cider (for my wife). Thus, within the first 10 minutes of getting to the restaurant, we were on our way to a great evening. The food was terrific, as well, but it was the service that set Nora apart."

  • "Nora never disappoints. I've been visiting in conjunction with business for at least 8 years and I never miss a trip to Nora. The food is fresh, sustainable and creative. The wine list is extensive and the servers are always willing to help. It's small but a really special treat."

  • "For just about anything! The food was great the service was impeccable and the flowers were the best I've ever seen on a table! I would recommend restaurant Nora above almost any other restaurant in the DC metro area!"

  • "First time at Nora's, enjoyed the ambience and service very much. Salads were Excellent! I tried the 12 hour roasted lamb, which I did not love, although it could be that I don't like lamb - jury's still out. Drinks and dessert were phenomenal as well. Might be a personal palate problem as opposed to a restaurant problem. Definitely a good place to go for a nice date night."

  • "I've been to Nora many times, and last Friday was massively disappointing. There were two entree choices for vegetarians (risotto or Tokyo hot pot), and my husband, my friend and I went for the risotto, which was tasteless. While we enjoyed our appetizers and dessert, the main course was as tasteless as hospital food (and it had neither the flavor nor the texture of risotto). We requested parmesan to try to improve it as it was lacking salt and fat, and were met with a stern look by the waiter (who brought a tiny amount of cheese to the table--we asked for more, yes!). I don't think we'll go back in a long time."

  • "I used to go to Restaurant Nora many years ago when I lived in Washington. Two decades later, my son has moved here to work and I took him and my mother there for a celebratory dinner. It did not disappoint. Our server was charming and unobtrusive, the food was divine and we had a quiet, lovely meal. I just wish it didn't cost a mortgage payment to eat there!"

  • "Nora is celebrating 35 years and it has been our go to choice for special occasions for at least 25 of those. We've always found it a top-notch choice for locally sourced and well cooked meals. So when I noticed that Nora was offering a three course prix fixe anniversary special for $35 on Wednesdays in March, I jumped at the chance. The dinner was fine, but certainly not our most memorable meal. Plus, when you add the least expensive available split of wine (no by the glass service), one cup of coffee and the tip, the nominal $70 dollar meal for two balloons quickly to $120 -- perfectly fine, but no bargain. I'd recommend just ordering off the menu."

  • "My wife and I went to Restaurant Nora on a Saturday night after making reservations the night before. We had heard about the restaurant and wanted to try it for some time. When we finally did, we were extremely pleased. I ordered the tasting menu for $79 while my wife opted for a starter salad followed by broiled salmon. I really enjoyed the Hawaiian hearts of Palm with pineapple carpaccio, cashews, chilis, and ginger. It was an explosion of taste not to be missed. I followed it with a roasted crimini mushroom and leek tart, and topped it off with the filet mignon with caramelized onions, mashed potatoes, broccoli, and cabernet sauce. Finally, we shared the molten chocolate cake with cappuccino ice cream. Look forward to go back soon."

  • "I wanted to love this place but it was just way too expensive for the quality of the food. It was priced like a high-end NYC restaurant and the food was just OK, not amazing. Being "organic" is no longer a differentiator so to justify those prices the food has to really stand out. I would also note that when we arrived they took us to a dining room that was in another building. We literally had to exit the restaurant and go to a neighboring building and go upstairs. While the decor was the same, it didn't feel like we were in the restaurant anymore. While I am sure the kitchen was connected, it made us feel like we were being sent to the annex."

  • "My brother was visiting from London for only 2 days and we decided to go to Restaurant Nora. We were so happy we chose Nora's! The food and presentation was superb, the wait staff spot on, and atmosphere was warm, cozy and inviting. I will definitely be returning. What a wonderful night! Thank you!"

  • "Service was inattentive. We had to ask for bread, and also ice for our water. We also weren't offered the option of getting sparkling water. Our rectangular table was at an angle, so that it stuck out into the aisle, and I was bumped all evening by waiters coming and going. Food portions were uneven, such that a very good steak tartare was served with too few crackers. Both couples at our table ordered a dessert to share -- the chocolate cake and ice cream was barely enough for a single person, while the crème brulee was a plenty for my wife and I to share. My main course of rabbit roulade was barely enough for a starter; while my wife's main course of veal and pasta was huge, but the veal seemed to be missing. We won't be going back."
