A word from Restaurant Gwendolyn
All perishables are from sustainable farms, locally sourced, and organic. Everything is handmade using only preparation methods and recipes that were available from 1850 and before. When you make your reservation please opt-in to our mailing list and we will occasionally let you know about specials or events you may want to know about. e.g Our current promotion is the 3 course tasting menu (normally $55) is only $35 if you dine with us Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday 5:30-6:30.   • "There's no better charcuterie plate in town, so opt for that to nibble on while you wait. Wait you will (not obnoxiously), as this is delicate plating of each course for each diner individually. After all, it's DINING not EATING here. Allow the wise servers to suggest wines so you can complete the experience. I love it here every time and look forward to the treat again. I've never had the same thing twice - everything is seasonal and local and fresh. Plates are generous too; another way the chef focuses on your happiness. The creativity of the kitchen shines through as each bite bursts with flavor. Bravo!"

  • "We have been to Gwendolyn several times. It's our "go to" for special dinners. The menu is amazing and always changing, we particularly enjoyed the fried Grouper and the Pork schnitzel this time. The staff is very attentive. The ambiance is perfect with beautiful views of the Riverwalk. This is not somewhere to go if you are looking for a quick dinner. The menu is a 3 or 5 course tasting menu. We always do the 5 course and it usually takes about 2-3 hours. It's a special place with a very talented and dedicated chef. "

Since this was our first time at the restaurant, it was confusing to us not to be greeted at the door and to have to ask where the valet was, so don't hesitate to introduce yourself to whoever is close to the door so you don't wander unknowingly towards the bathroom, looking for the hostess or valet."

  • "There's a solid goodness and homemade appeal here within the haute of it all. It's hearty too; you'll never feel like you need to stop for a snack on the way home. We loved every dish and enjoyed the selection on the coursed dinners (he got 5, I got 3 so we could mix it up). We go back periodically because it's different every time, depending on what the chef has sourced and what's in season. True farm to table restaurant with sincerety and heart. Don't leave without coffee! It's small so make a reservation."

  • "I am very disappointed to no be able to give a better review of the food. The quality of ingredients used by Restaurant Gwendolyn is high- everything, produce and meat, comes from within 150 miles and they even break down the carcasses in house. That being said, the flavors they put together in many dishes were far from pleasant. The lamb dish was overwhelmed by rosemary and citrus marmalade and the tar tar was also less than palate pleasing. The acorn squash was filled with butter and brown sugar and baked, simple, but not delicious. Also, if you're a party of 2, don't get the optional appetizer plate. With the 5 course menu it's way too much food. We were unable to enjoy my stuffed quail main course or the pecan dessert (best dishes)."

While waiting and waiting for our second course, we drank the first bottle and ordered another. We wanted wine with our entrees. Then waited and waited again for dessert course. The beef was dry and the pasta, tough. We had an order of caviar for two and got a plate with warm caviar and three blinis. We thought two or four would have made more sense (for two). I wish I could be a bit encouraging to this enthusiastic endeavor, but it all seemed like a great idea with no clue about how to execute. So sorry, but we did not enjoy this place!"

  • "For me, one of the best restaurants in town. The quality of the food is excellent, portion sizes are perfect if you're not seven times a healthy BMI, the price is high, but well worth it. I was slightly surprised to have papaya on the menu in November given the locally sourced produce, but suffice it to say the kitchen is not terribly limited. The atmosphere is very comfortable; clean, simple, and elegant without trying to be. The wait staff is excellent, and extremely knowledgeable but their lack of uniform, posture, and hipster demeanor might upset the high brow white collar crowd (read: Texas oil money looking for a steak). That's fine though as I doubt they'd really "get" the ideology that seems to motivate the restaurant."

Perhaps because of the limited selection (3- and 5-course prix fixe dinners with limited choices within courses) our experience was not quite as wonderful as we had hoped. From a full menu, neither of us would have been likely to choose any of the courses we selected and, although the service was impeccable, it didn't quite make up for our disappointment with the food. Consequently, we thought the price was too high. We might go back on a future visit to San Antonio, but not before determining what the chef has selected for the evening's menu."

  • "I have been to truly great restaurants, notable chefs preparing amazing local cuisine. My group of 4 had the 3-course tasting menu and 2 bottles of good pinot noir on a Saturday (early evening). I was excited about the tasting menu, because have had many tremendous experiences with them. In this case, there were definitely moments when we were delighted (direct hits) and others were underwhelming (big-time misses). The food was beautifully presented and appreciate that the chef was willing to accommodate several vegetarians in our group. I wanted to leave with no question that it was a great meal. It was a good meal, but honestly, I could replicate most of the dishes at home. Wait staff was outstanding - best part of the evening."

  • "I went to Gwendolyn a year ago and had a phenomenal experience. As a result, I recommended Restaurant Gwendolyn for a very important business dinner on my recent trip to San Antonio. We were one of three parties in the restaurant and the wait between courses was an average of half an hour to 45 minutes. The wait staff was intrusive, awkward, neurotic, rude and inappropriate. My clients were very uncomfortable and ultimately angry. I was extremely embarrassed. Gwendolyn has moved from one of the best dining experiences I have had to one of the worst. I will not return and will not recommend."

Interesting concept of preparing food as in the 1800's, but... the dishes failed to rise above good in flavor and presentation was lacking an expert chef's touch. Service a bit loose. This is a stern evaluation but I was expecting the 5 star food I had read about. Unfortunately a loud outdoor rock band was vibrating the place from directly across the river. This is where Le Reve used to reside and it's not close to its predecessor."

  • "This was a great find on the Riverwalk! When I arrived in San Antonio for a conference I was concerned about the food options within walking distance from my hotel. Many of the restaurants that line the Riverwalk appeared too touristy with sub-par food. I was delighted to find Restaurant Gwendolyn - serving delicious, upscale, locally-sourced food in a lovely and unpretentious atmosphere. Located on a quite corner of the Riverwalk, it was nice to be able to enjoy the beauty of the Riverwalk without the noisy tourists. I had the 3-course meal plus the charcuterie plate. It was all amazing! I highly recommend it!"

Restaurant Gwendolyn is a fine dining establishment where the chef pays remarkable attention to the selection of fresh, flavorful ingredients. The taste combinations in my frisee goat cheese salad and my shrimp fettucine were exquisite. Service is skillful but course changes can proceed at a languid pace if the table seems content to converse and not finish their plates. The wine pairings were innovative. Highly recommended."

  • "I hated how much my husband and I hated this resaurant, the food was ok (not great), I would hardly call this "french" the waitstaff is awful they can't pronounce the wine they are serving, the pours are very small, don't bother waiting for the valet theres only 1 kid they tell you to lock your doors with the cars hazards on and come on in the kid will get to your car when he comes back. I guess the problem was i wanted so badly for there to be another lereve..... that it is NOT!!!"

  • "The concept of this restaurant and its food both rate five stars. Our waiter was personable and knowledgeable. The pacing of the five-course dinner was excellent, neither too fast or too slow. Everything I ate was delicious, but I would rate as outstanding the wild game ravioli, the salad of Romaine lettuce, boiled egg, and house-made bacon. and the grapefruit sorbet. Quiet place, good service, chef and wait staff that know what they are doing and are ready to talk about it."
