Note: This was our first visit. I
ordered the canard l'orange. Overall I liked the dish. The duck breast did not disappoint, and that made me happy. The sauce was more balsamic-y, than orange-y. My husband ordered the duck confit, which he enjoyed to the last bit. Good wine selection; they paired well with our food. Now, the service. Usually going to a French restaurant (here or France) can be a daunting experience. Not at Ducroix. I could totally relax and have a great time dinning. Although the host/waiter was busy, he was very gracious. As for the appetizers and desserts, I won't go into details, since they don't matter as much as the main dishes. Besides, they were good. To sum this review, we will return to Ducroix."

As others had previously shared,
service suffers at this neighborhood restaurant as a single hard working server struggles under the weight of playing the role of both busboy, server and cashier for the entire restaurant. We ordered a bottle of champagne which we eventually resorted to pouring for ourselves. The ahi tuna salad which was delivered to the table charred black burned rather than slightly cooked was better once returned to the kitchen and replaced. The rib eye steak was at least 1/3rd fat, though the peppercorn sauce was good. The dessert, I believe some kind of baked apple, was very good."

The place is a hidden gem and is
easy to miss if you're not looking closely. Small and intimate with a halfway decent wine list. The food, however, was amazing! Although my wife and I were initially disappointed that they had sold out of Escargot for appetizers, the other choices did not disappoint. Moreover, the Canard L'Orange was better than the one we had at Chez Panisse. The Lamb Shank was also an excellent choice - tender, moist and not "gamey". This is by far the best French restaurant we've been to in a while! Our compliments to the chef!!"

When this small restaurant gets
full of people the noise level is truly deafening! The place desperately needs some acoustical treatment. That alone prevents me from returning for a meal. I"d go back only with ear plugs. There was only one waiter and no bus boy. When it got very busy he was running back and forth to the open kitchen, a great distraction to my dining. A calm atmosphere is part of the dining experience. A guy running a foot race is not part of that atmosphere. Considering the number of people he had to tend he did a remarkable job. The food was good and I could not fault anything I had. The parsnip soup was delicious."

We love the food @ Ducroix...it
was our 2nd dinner visit last Friday night. We started off with super scrumptious salads: Nocoise & Endive. Much thanks to Philip's recommendation. Our main courses consists of Duck Breast a L'orange and Lamb Shank...both were done perfectly & delicious. We shared a petite lava cake, just the right size, to finish off a wonderful meal."

I don't know, folks, the positive,
raving reviews I read about this place simply don't match my experience; in any way. The menu choices were limited. The service was good, but the food just wasn't up to my expectations based on the reviews. I found the place dark and dreary. The bright spot? The wine was good. If I was going to take someone out for a special occasion, this would NOT be the place. I think this would be a good candidate for Restaurant Impossible!"

Some reviews said this place was
romantic, but food and service was great! It has dimmer lighting to make the place seem more intimate. Wth some creative interior decorating, I think it would make improvements on first impressions. Upon walking in, it feels more "homely" in a good way. With the open and industrial view of the kitchen, bare walls, and chalkboard "specials" menu, that's why I wouldn't call this place romantic. I was pleasantly surprised with the food! Each component of the dishes complimented everything very well and entrees were filling! I would consider myself a "foodie" even this was a first time for me to try French cuisine, the food makes me want to move to France! I would come here again since prices were reasonable."

Dined at Ducroix with three
friends. We loved the escargot and mussels (the mussels are an entree but they were happy to bring it out as an app as requested.) Three entrees were a hit (duck confit, salmon, and steak frites) but my friend thought the lamb shank was a bit bland. The space is quite small and there aren't a lot of tables, though a lack of upholstery means that a few people can make the place noisy; the decibel level really depends on who else is in the restaurant. There is one waiter and one manager bringing all the plates and drinks, so service can be a little sparse at times but always friendly."

I've always enjoyed the food at
Ducroix. I like introducing my friends to the place when I can. The food is usually classic, yet not outrageously so. I had the salade Nicoise, my favorite. Instead of tuna, it had slices of beef (sure didn't look like seared tuna), which was good on a winter day. It didn't bother me, but it might have bothered any other customer that may not like beef. The waiter did not let me know ahead of time about the change in the ingredients. However, it did work and tasted wonderful. I'm afraid that I did not ask my friends about their meals; we were too busy talking and catching up. However, I know they said the food was good."

There was 1 person to handle
incoming guests, take orders, serve food, take payments. It took 8 minutes to be seated although there were two open tables (because he was handling everything else). It took a while to get our order taken, etc. We were pretty understanding as he was the only person doing everything. But when the majority of the restaurant emptied out (we had a later reservation after the lunch rush), the service STILL sucked. It was down to us and one other table being occupied out of the entire restaurant and still we had to wait an inordinate amount of time for our dessert to be served, to get the bill, to pay the bill, etc. We were the LAST ones left in the restaurant. It was unbelievable. Can't say I'll ever return."

This is a small French restaurant
which will remind you of bistros in France: good, satisfying food and wine, straightforward decor, and french staff. It's easy to walk by but if you enter, you'll be delighted. Have the risotto. Salmon is very good every time. Restaurant Ducroix is a wonderful find in a city with many pretentious, overdone restaurants, with prices to match. This place feels warmer, more authentic and satisfying."

We sat at the table with empty
water glasses, that were placed on the table that way, waiting for bottles to fill them for over 15 minutes. At some point in that time the waiter took our order in an extremely rushed almost iritated manner. That was the only fast thing about our experience. Everything took too long and most of the dishes were quite overcooked when they finally came. All in all we were there for 90 minutes and that wasn't by choice."

(during Dine About Town) - there was only one waiter working for the entire dining room and service was painfully slow. Not the waiter's fault, there should have been at least one or two other people working for the size of the room. Unfortunately it meant we had a terrible experience - I never even got silverware for my dessert."

We were seated at what I referred
to as a "throwaway table" (looked like they brought out a break room table and chairs so they could overbook - table did not even have a tablecloth, but instead was covered with multiple dinner napkins). We were seated directly in front of the boiling hot kitchen; front and center (zero intimacy). Asked if we could choose a different table (some were empty), we were told, loudly (people actually looked up from their dinner) it was not possible (I made reservations over a month ago). Decided to wing it anyway - food was mediocre at best - the filet mignon was tough, smothered in an overpowering peppercorn sauce; the scallops had absolutely no taste whatsoever, and the pear tartin was bland and burnt."

two entree choices and the dessert choice. Said they were running low due to the Holidays, but the place was empty at 7pm. Food presented was very good and waiter was pleasant. Wine was good. Seating was uncomfortable."

I've been to Restaurant Ducroix
several times before. A small, intimate place to have a great meal at a reasonable price. This time it was to celebrate a colleague's 50th birthday. I brought a very special bottle of wine from the Napa Valley Reserve to celebrate. Our reservation was at 6:30 PM so I assumed the restaurant would be fairly empty because that's a bit early for dinner. I was right: we were there with only one other party: a party of a dozen guys wooping it up, screaming and laughing so loud that I had to keep cupping my ears in order to hear my colleague talk. And the management did nothing to calm them down. What was supposed to be an intimate evening was ruined. This restaurant is not the venue for such gatherings."

A good find for a last minute
dinner reservation with my girlfriend. Small, unassuming restaurant, very friendly staff. Duck and sea bass were both delicious - good sized portions too, you get your money's worth. Restaurant was nearly empty when we came in at 7:30, but was packed by the time we left. Can be a bit noisy when full, but no other downsides."

We had one night in SFO and had
eaten at all the known hotspots already. We were ready for something out of the spotlight. We tried Restaurant Ducroix and had a reservation on the early side. Very quaint and warm vibe. Server was very attentive. Was a big help with the wine choice. Food was very good and we left knowing we'd be back. By the time we left the place was full and it was obvious a favorite with the locals."

We had a 5:30 pm reservation for 8
on a Monday night. It was a pleasure to be able to hold conversations without shouting. The French onion soup was delicious as was the trout with almonds. Nice selection of desserts that all enjoyed including chocolate mousse, profiteroles, poached pear, and creme brûlée. Overall, a wonderful experience."

This was our third visit to
Restaurant Delacroix and the food quality and service were not as good as before. Food presentation very sloppy. Also---you have to ask for bread---what kind of French restaurant doesn't provide bread as a staple on the table? Disappointing."

I have been to Ducroix several
times now and I am always pleased with their excellent food and fine service. It is a great place to have lunch with friends. The only thing I noticed this time was that the noise level has gone up a bit and it was difficult to hear the conversation. Otherwise, a great experience!"

It was an absolute joy finding
Ducroix seemingly hiding in plain site - terrific French inspired menu with surf, turf, and many creative vegetarian options. Two of us dined on a Tuesday evening and the scene was relatively quiet, with less than half of the tables occupied. We both ordered fish entrees - sea bass and salmon, and both were cooked to perfection. Our waiter recommended a Beaujolais to pair with our dinner- delicious. We passed on dessert, though the offerings were very tempting. We'll be back!"

Right on the border of chinatown
in a building that doesn't look like much, this was a great find for a few friends looking for a quiet meal out. Sipped red wine and ate terrific classic french dishes, with friendly and knowledgeable service."
