My favorite restaurant in all of Dallas is actually in Rockwall. Chef Randall Copeland knows his food and we love eating here over and again. Chef Copeland has created a special dining experience in crafting his menus with incredible farm-to-table combinations that are hard to find in Dallas.

Absolutely outstanding! We started with the spinach artichoke dip -- delicious, creamy with a zing. Next, we had the spinach/arugula salad. I've never had a deep-fried, poached egg before; unique and delicious! My wife had the chicken with mushroom risotto, melt-in-your mouth tender, wow. I had the beef tenderloin, one of the best three steak experiences I've ever had (and I've been in some of the best steakhouses to be found west of the Mississippi). Our server was delightful, present when needed but never intrusive. Atmosphere was excellent, enough music to keep our conversation private but quiet enough for a memorable date night. Thank you, Ava Team!

Overall we had a very enjoyable experience. We had four different entrees; trout, steak, chicken breast and pork chop. All agreed that the meat was cooked very well and to everyone's liking. The wine was very good. Service from Sean (sp?) was very good. Friendly and fun and very attentive. The common complaint at our table was the vegetables. The baby carrots were very good, but the fingerling potatoes were undercooked. My brussel sprouts were tough and chewy, while the spaghetti squash was , for lack of a better word "mushy." The rice and musrooms with the chicken breast had an "odd" flavor and were overcooked. The Caesar salads didn't taste fresh and crisp.

Our waiter was outstanding! He was polite, frinedly, with a sense of humor. Also, he was professional. The restaurant had a chic look, upscale like in Dallas. I would go to the restaurant just to have a drink and cheese plate with a friend or for a special occassion (dinner date). It was lovely!

The food was incredible and the dishes were creative. We dined with a $25 Restaurant.com gift card and were given a free appetizer and still dropped $45 dollars. For a family with 1 child and 1 on the way, this would only be a very special occasion due to the price. Again, excellent restaurant.

It is such a treat to find a dining experience such as RA in Rockwall. My husband and I hope to return often. My only slip in the 'suggestion box' would be -- as a celiac sufferer, I would greatly appreciate gluten-free options. It would be helpful as well to list the existing gluten-free options on the menu.

AVA is excellent. It was our first time. We have to drive an hour to get there and we'll do it again. I recommend the 5 course sampler menu and the wine pairing that you can get separately. Also, ask for Sean. He's great - really knows the menu and wine!

  • EPIC FAIL!!!!!
    OpenTable Diner Since 2009
    Dined on 2/13/2013
Dinner was an epic fail on all fronts. Timing was off. It took over 15 minutes just to get drinks. Appetizers and entrees arrived at the same time. Oyster appetizer was over cooked and chewy. (We mentioned this to the waiter. Yes, we were still charged for them.)My wife's trout was unappealing to the eye, adorned only with a few parsley flakes. My shrimp and grits looked like they were just thrown on the plate with some lettuce tossed on top as a garnish. We waited a long time for the entrees. The salad we ordered never came; neither did the bread that they promised. The waiter was inattentive and I wasn’t able to order more wine with my entree. They ran out of side dishes and desserts. I got no response to the e-mail I sent them.

This was our second visit to Ava, with many more visits to come, hopefully. I had scallops with dill & beet risotto and my wife had the beef tenderloin - both of which where excellent. Sauteed mushrooms were great. Smoked Gouda mac 'n cheese was only OK. The chocolate s'more brownie is the best dessert we've ever eaten anywhere, but we are still trying to figure out how our waiter magically produced it from behind his back 2 seconds after we chose it. Lucky guess, maybe??? Only small complaint is that some of the tables are a little close to each other, but it's a pretty small place, so I guess they have to maximize what space they have. Overall, great meal and unmatched service. Can't wait to return!

This was my first visit to Restaurant Ava and my husband and I had a wonderful evening. The wine was great. Service very attentive and friendly. Food came out with great timing and was delicious. My only complaint is the calamari. It could've been crispier. It was a little bit bland and the squid a bit chewy. The aioli was lacking flavor but the chili sauce was great. My scallops were cooked to perfection. My husband's chicken fried steak was huge and yummy. Our dessert, even though we lacked room in our stomachs, was something we would've regretted missing. The s'more brownie with salted caramel ice cream. Delicious... We will definitely be back.

Excellent food, drinks and atmosphere for a special early Valentine's celebration with my husband. The ribeye with bread pudding was fantastic, and cooked as requested. Went for a birthday. Party of 6. Menu wasn't clear on some items regarding ingredients. Everything overall was good. Wouldn't order the grits and shrimp again too complicated. Should keep the dish more simple. I know chef's get a little excited when sometimes less is more. Desserts were pricey for the portion size you get. Restaurant was very clean, everyone extremely friendly. I would recommend more for going by having a couple drinks and appetizers at the bar and calling it a day. Wouldn't recommend for dinner. Trying to be an upscale restaurant but not quite pulling it off.

Reservation time honored with no wait. Waiter was kind enough to let us select a different table when we arrived. Great wait staff and servers. Food was fantastic. Wine list also vary extensive. Waiter brought out food with no rushing and at perfect timed intervals. Only negatives ( which are not really bad...): Wished lighting was a bit dimmer to create more ambiance. Dress code implied "business casual," however there were at lot of patrons in jeans- one table even donned fleece! ..... So atmosphere much more casual than restaurant website implied. I was going for a romantic dinner out ... And this was not very romantic- but was still a gem! Expect to spend approx $100 for dinner for two.

Ava is an okay restaurant. We were not impressed with our service in that they were out of the wine we wanted then the server just didn't know his wine when we were asking what was available, then he came back and he had the wine we wanted in the first place. I was not amused. They also ran out of the special which is what my husband wanted after hearing all about it. It was very early in the evening to be running out of the nightly special. Fortunately his tenderloin he ordered was very good and cooked as requested (med rare). My chicken was just chicken, nothing fancy or seasoned about it. Would not order it again. The fried pickles were the best I've ever had! The decor and ambience were good. Will think twice before returning

The last tree times we ate here we arrived early for the 33% off special before 6pm. Each time we received a check for the full price and had to have the bill changed. Duck was cooked too rare for my or my wifes liking. calamare was over breaded. When we finished it there was half a bowl of bread left that we peel off of the Calamare. They do have a good red house wine.

The restaurant is very cozy and has a bistro feel. The service was attentive but not overly warm and welcoming despite the fact we were the only guests at the time. We tried the fried pickles, salads, butternut squash soup all of which were amazing and accompanied by warm fresh bread. The server was especially helpful in our wine selection. Hubby had the pork chop entree with spaghetti squash which was a hit, but my quail special which extremely salty. The server was very responsive and brought me a new one, that while a little underwhelming, was much appreciated. Dessert was the apple crumb which was very delicious. If I were a local, I may give it another shot, but it's too long of a drive and pricey for an okay experience.

Obviously we made reservations since it was a Saturday night. When we got there, it was packed. That's is what you'd expect on a Saturday night at 7:15. However, because it was so packed, we were treated WAY different than we've come to expect at Ava. First, there was no bread. This is unusual because, as we looked around, everyone else had bread. So after our appetizer, we asked for it. "Oh let me go get that," he said forgetfully. Still no bread. I had one glass of water to make it through the whole meal. And we got no amuse bouche, which is very weird. Basically it was, "Here's your water. What do you want to eat. Here's the check!"

My wife and I had dinner new years eve from the 4 course fixed menu. The menu selections were outstanding, but the food was just average that evening. The server explained the fixed menu was help speed up kithcen servce - fine by me. However, I was esp. disappointed in course 3 - the wood roasted filet ..the carrot puree had a crust on top as if it were baking under a heat lamp and the swiss chard was bitter and mushy. The steak was really good. I ve eaten at Ava probably 10 times, and the food is normlly outstanding. Unfortunately, in my opinion, New Years eve dinner was just average. My review may seem critical, but at $75 per patron (4 course fixed menu - $200 for me and my wife), my expecatations were higher.

New Years Eve. Had reservations for 4. Larger crowd than last year, noisy. Food was pretty good, special menu for New Years. Service was not good, slow, mixed up our entrees; our table was so close to the next table that I kept getting bumped into by waiters trying to pass between, very annoying. Ordered wine parings. VERY small servings of wine because it was a "pairing"? Could have ordered separate glasses much cheaper!! Brown paper placed on tables as overlay to save them from changing table cloths!! Not sure we will go back next New Years.

I had heard wonderful things about Ava over the years, so we finally did Brunch for my grandmother's birthday. It was mildly good at best. I felt that Ava's was not at all a good looking restaurant. Wierd layout, used up and rickety chairs/ tables. Food was not good especially when the prices were so high. They gave us a kid menu for Brunch that had nothing other than lunch items. Where's the breakfast for kids? I had to order my kids an adult meal and let them split it. Kind of annoying. The bottomless mimosas were lacking champagne and my coffee was spilled all over the cup and saucer. My family had a fun time being together, but visiting Ava for our special day was a mistake.I love Bin 303 and Zanata's, so that's where our money will be.
